Giant Bombcast 12/08/2015

It's December. Where'd all this news come from? Oh well, time to break down all the goings-on out of the Game Awards and the PlayStation Experience with the help of one very special Irish guest. All this plus new offices, KGB spies, erstwhile hooahs, and your emails!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Dec. 8 2015

Posted by: Brad

Episode Notes:

The 60 Minutes piece about the KGB agent is behind a paywall and thus not easily viewed, but watch it if you can.

Great episode, I keep enjoying the VR impressions.

yeah? i'm pretty burned out on it tbh- i just want the hardware out so we can see what devs do with it. i feel like i'm totally full-up on second hand impressions of largely intangible/indescribable experiences.

i'm still excited- but there's a part of me that increasingly just wants to fast forward 2 years to see if it gets a toehold or not. they really need something killer at or shortly after launch to sell the significant financial investment. otherwise we might end up with a 32x/sega cd situation where the tech is cutting edge, but the experiences don't justify the cost.

aside: i really think the ff7 thing is a strange thing to be excited about. i loved my experience with it the first go around- but i can go back to it anytime. and there's just no way they can 'remake' that game and expect to capture the spirit of the thing. like brad said, it's almost 20 years later!

Cleaning the dust away with woodglue of the right type vinyl lasts forever if stored right and used right with a kind needle (pressure, shape, quality). Magnetic media will die and nothing can be done about it, sell your famicom discs while they still work, invest in cassette tape factories while they still profit to hipsters.

@mellotronrules: I get that and there's probably many like you, but I'm so excited by VR that I like hearing any impression of it. It's what got me back into Tested for a time.

@pillclinton: I hate to say it guys but I'm pretty sure no one else will finish it. Dan washed his hands clean off it, Jeff doesn't like it all that much and Bradbis waiting for some patch. Similarly on the east coast I don't think anyone had time to finish it, with Austin putting like 80 hrs into Fallout 4 instead, Vinny having a family and Alex just starting it on Thanksgiving.

It can be your personal GOTY in your heart but I wouldn't expect any detailed conversation apart from a few quips about bad movement and how it was buggy.

@pillclinton: isn't that such a shame? RPGs always seem to get short shrift around GB - it seems like Rorie is the only one who REALLY likes them, and he couldn't be bothered to finish The Witcher or Pillars of Eternity either.

Guys don't really seem that excited about anything, whether it's news or what they are playing. I mean I don't want them to force out game conversations of the same length and quality in the past but I just get a little bummed about the industry when it seems most games released meet with a "meh" from whoevers playing it.

Purdue is in Lafayette, Indiana. The best thing I can say about Indiana is my brother bought a 3 bedroom / 2 bathroom house there for $83K and it wasn't a foreclosure/bank-sale.

P.S. - Greg Miller ruined the Game Awards, but that's IGN for you.

Im not sure i understand this whole "you can't remake things" especially when it comes to FF7 i played and beat the game when i was 12 im now 31 tastes change and so can our memories. The game does not age well with the polygon graphics and im not sure i could replay it nowadays(i tried 5 years ago and couldnt do it). This new take looks awesome at least from a trailer that was shown other than that we know next to nothing about it. I am certainly cautiously optimistic though and am looking forward to more news and footage going forward.

That Merc self-driving car concept totally has windows, they're just mostly opaque when viewed from the exterior

Edit: Now that I've hit this section, do I tell Dan what they can do to you when you show up at the ER with priapism?

Edit #2: Somebody needs to show Brad some Joshi wrestling, judging by his reaction to the idea of strong style, it'd break his brain I think.

It would be pretty sad if they all somehow managed to miss out on one of the biggest releases of the year. And no official GB review for the history books either.

and The DLC for witcher 3 is goddamn fantastic as well, but i think Vinny and Austin will eventually get around to playing it.

OMG... the description you guys give of the Rez suit makes me want it so bad. That sounds amazing. Rez already has a first person view and other stuff built into it, in the PS2 version you could unlock all sorts of trippy color schemes and beam types.

Wow in rare form this podcast wasn't as entertaining to hear. Its not that Jeff and the crew were any different, its just the topics covered this time around were largely very uninteresting but I should have known that coming in seeing as how both big events really covered the smaller stuff this time around.

I really dislike how much Brad enjoys manufacturing drama. Countless times he's said, "I shouldn't read this," or "I'll regret reading this," only to do so anyway. Let the humor come naturally from the crew reaction; don't do a set-up in hopes of generating an atmosphere prior to the punchline.

Also, Bombcast drinking game: take a shot every time Bradley says, "Oh God you're right!" in a pained voice.

Just, like, my opinion, man. Don't want to get busted again for being a negative nelly, but I figure this is a safe place to express concerns about the quality of the cherished Bombcast.

Son, do you even Drinking Game?

It's Brad's show now and this is the same guy who will gladly start a discussion on a wikipedia article about eating the bone marrow of scorpion eggs from the ants he just vacuumed up with borax. At some point you just need to skip 8 minutes of Bombcast and pretend it never happened.

"Oh God," is too common. His "Oh God you're right" is burned into my brain.

I enjoy the tangents. I don't enjoy the manufactured drama. There's a difference. I'm not talking about the first 8 minutes, I'm talking about every segue and every email intro.

I get that food is always gonna be a cultural thing but my first reaction to people complaining about eating blood or other "gross" things is always like "what babies" in my head. Not that I seriously think they're babies. Well sometimes Dan when he complains about goddamn mayo.

I mean I'd be the first to say things like congealed blood is weird but so are most things. I think after eating balut since I was a kid I'm not phased by things. I think I would have nerves about eating bugs though.

Whats funny is ever since I moved to the US my tolerance for food items out of the norm has vanished entirely. I used to travel a lot around Asia and lived in many places and have eaten snakes, monkeybrains (disgusting), tripe, intestines, hearts, bear meat, tiger meat, dog meat, crocodiles, snakes, snails, bats what have you. Now the concept of something that looks like chicken but isn't chicken grosses me out. I still love bone marrow and only generally indulge in crunching down a meaty chicken bone in private as often enough it does come off as barbaric. Go figure...

Well you need to consider the obligation the crew has to play almost every single game out there to review, it can be pretty taxing to play these complex and long games on the fly. Some times you need to be in the right mood to enjoy something so vast and seeing as how these guys have to play a lot of games sometimes it can just be exhausting. Which makes sense why often enough you see many of them are enamored with smaller simpler games that are easier to digest in a sitting or two.

Anyway it seems to me that TW3 and CDPR got their recognition in the most public space possible and I am sure at the end of the day most people are going to look to that. Weather the team here or any other site opt to choose TW3 or not will have little impact on CDPR's well earned title.

I am a relatively new comer to GB and have been a member of the GI community for a long time now. One of the reasons I gravitated towards GB's podcast is primarily because Jeff and his crew have a certain outlook that GI cast lacks. In my case I always found Jeff and Brad's podcast to feel more like dude bro, PC shooter kind of crowd although the intelligent portions of them. I like the cynicsm in here which gives a good opposition to GI's penchant for interest in mostly Nintendo and more staple console mainstream games. So its sort of expected that this group will not really take to many things that are outside of good old fashion fun games. Besides most of the time I find Brad and co oogling familiar mainstream titles and sequels that require less time to adjust to.

@the_spaz_rises: Oh I know, I mainly wrote that out as a "don't be upset when they don't talk much about it" sort of warning. Without getting into a whole dumb discussion about what ones responsibilities are as a game critic - things which I really can't speak to as I've never worked in this field - the bottom line is they play what they play. On a recent podcast I heard Dan stayed home for two days to play Just Cause 3, so like when they want to take the time to finish something they absolutely can. Realistically it's not going to be everything, but you know what your tent-pole releases are going to be and plan that time out accordingly. Jeff blew through Fallout 4 in a weekend from what I heard. Thing is Giant Bomb doesn't have to cover anything because it's not a review site - it's just the sporadic trickle of reviews from the crew make you sometimes forget that.
