Want to know what's on Giant Bomb this week? This often-wrong look at the week ahead may help!

I would like a bombcast this week, but if we don't get one, it's understandable.

@WrenchNinja: You buy digital shit and you're taking a risk no matter what you do. 10 years from now Microsoft, Sony and Valve could be out of business and I'm shit out of luck with my thousands of dollars of digital content. Being able to swap my account between systems means fuck all in that situation.

To be fair, he wasn't talking about playing his Wii U in 10 years; he means what if NEXT year his kid shoves pennies in the disk slot and it gets broken. Or there ends up being some red ring equivalent with the system. Lots of crazy stuff can happen to a system and in this case if it does you are SOL on your digital content. Being hyperbolic doesn't invalidate his point that every other system allows you to migrate your profile, there is no reason for this system to disallow that.

Ok Jeff has talked about wanting to play ZombieU and Walking Dead, both Zombie heavy games. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE??!!?!

Crazy thing is is that he had little interest in "Dead Island" (as far as I can remeber) and was hostile towards the Dark/Demons Souls games. Which is what ZombiU strikes me as.

I think the answer lies in the fact that Jeff just impulsively bought a Wii U and needs games to play besides Nintendoland and New Super Mario Bros. U.

Jeff not celebrating thanksgiving sounds pretty good to me. If we could just rename it "Day you eat turkey and stuffing and potatoes" and take out all the bits where you are expected to see the less desirable elements of your family, I would be happy.

my problem with co-opting the rogue-like term is that the people who are doing it don't even really know what it means or use it consistently.

I've heard people use it so broadly that super mario brothers would be a rogue like. Sorry that's bullshit.

My take is that to qualify:

  • 1 game, 1 life, 1 save
  • you die the save is deleted and your progress/level go up on a scoreboard
  • items interact in a fairly deep and sometimes surprising way
  • procedurally generated levels or environments

If it's just 1 or 2 items from the list don't call it a rogue-like. Just say what it is and save everyone the confusion and wasted time.

Spelunky: YES. ZombieU: NO.

So.. an adventure game with rouge-like elements? Does that satisfy you?

And no, I don't have a ton of friends and family who move their profiles around all over the place. Insinuating that that's a normal occurrence is hard for me to swallow.

There's certainly that risk with Sony, as you are only allowed to backup the installed games, not the installers, and thus couldn't easily reinstall your games on another console if PSN shuts down, but with Steam you do have all the files on your hard drive, have the ability to make full backups and Valve have said that they have emergency measures in place to unlock all the games you own in case they would close down, and even if they would fail to deliver on that promise, as long as you have the files there are alternative measures to unlock them. If you've bought your games from GOG you're not guaranteed to be able to download them from GOG for eternity, but if you download all the games you buy from them and make sure to have regular backups, you'll always have them and there are no measures there to prevent you from doing what you want with your games there. Same goes with most games from Gamer's Gate (as long as you tell the downloader to keep the setup folders after it's done installing). I haven't tried Microsoft's store, so can't say how stuff is there, but it's probably similar to Sony's PSN.

But generally, with Steam, GOG, Desura and Gamer's Gate, and probably even Origin, there is little preventing you from keeping the games if the services were to shut down, as long as you don't rely on that they'll always be available to download from them, but rather download them as soon as you purchase them and make regular backups. The fact that they allow you to login on different computers makes it easier for you to download and make backups even on machines you don't play on that often, and maybe only keep your most commonly played games on your gaming rig.

Not being able to access your Nintendo account on multiple consoles is absolute rubbish. Every other company and system allows you to do this... Steam, Origin, Xbox Live, Apple, PSN, Google, U-Play, gog, and so on. There is no point to not allowing accounts to be accessed on multiple systems. It's just Nintendo being backwards, as always.

You are probably the best person in the world, man. I actually love you.

Know who I don't love, though? NINTENDO. What the actual fuck with this console-bound content shit? What's the point of registering a Nintendo ID, then? They've had this whole generation to look at what works and what doesn't, to devise a console that cleanly and smoothly integrates all of the late-gen services and features of the Xbox and PS3 without sacrificing design or functionality to add those things, and they fucked it up in the worst way possible. Literally the worst fucking way.

Stopped watching there.

Permadeath in itself doesn't make a game a roguelike.

Even having roguelike elements - FTL, The Binding of Isaac - does not make a game a roguelike;

the developers themselves will attest to their debt to the genre and the exclusion of their own games therein.

If anything, these and ZombiU are roguelike-likes, and yes, the distinction IS important to roguelike players when ignorant mainstream journalists toss the term around as Buzzword-of-the-Month while never having heard of Angband, ADOM, or Dungeon Crawl once in their lives.

I'm not talking about ten years from now. I'm talking about now and the recent future. A year from now. Two years from now. Do you remember RROD and YLOD? There's already people having their Wii U's crash. These devices are getting more complicated as the years go by with moving parts, It would be pretty consumer friendly having any content downloads, y'know, tied to your account so that you can redownload on replacement devices.

And no, you misunderstand. I'm asking whether you don't go to friend's houses to play games at all? The usefulness of the 360, PSN, Steam profile is that you can go to their house and redownload content on their devices to play at their house. Same goes for you visiting your families place if they have a device that supports this (which is pretty much all of them other than Nintendo). The 360 useful since you can carry external storage and play off that. Steam is useful since you can back up games and burn them on discs. PSN isn't as useful, but there's still the option to download on multiples devices. The Wii U's external storage is locked to the console, like the account and games.

Just because you don't take advantage of this feature or care that your content is tied to your account, it does not mean other people have to sit quietly about this. That feature exists for a reasons because it gives incredible leeway for the end user, to match something that many of us did as kids, borrow or bring retail games over to friend's places.

He gazed up at the enormous calendar. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of day was hidden beneath the dark borders. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself.

He loved Mondays.

@thebigJ_A: Thank god they finally point out that they do know the what a roguelike is though and they probably wouldn't have talked about it unless Jeff had mentioned the whole thing. You gotta admit that if you actually know what a roguelike is and have played them, it's pretty fucking annoying that now, that it's a more "mainstream" thing, the term is thrown around all willy-nilly and it's meaning is getting a lot less spesific. It's like calling XCOM and RTS because it's got strategy in it. Though all of this shouldn't be a surprise considering a lot of people refer to every shooter as an FPS even if the player controls a character from a third-person perspective.

Kinda weird how Jeff is so up for jumping into ZombiU, which is clearly a more traditional Zombie game, but was straight up against playing into Telltale's TWD for so long. That probably speaks a lot for the release lineup for the WiiU.

And for everyone who's worried about the Bombcast this is what Ryan posted on Twitter

What a horrible impression I'm left with after these 7+ hours; especially when it comes to the 3rd party software and the issues with load times and frame rates they have -- not that it's much different from the PS3 launch in that department. The WiiU literally has nothing to offer me at this point and it's looking kinda glum future-wise. I'm sure a new proper HD Zelda or Mario game might make me reconsider but I'm guessing those games aren't happening any time soon and maybe by then they've smoothed out some rough spots.

NintendoLand however looks fun to play with kids (or drunk friends) so at least there's that.

Thanks GB crew!
