At this point Jan, Best advice is to read it. One Piece is beloved because it has some really good story beats, but after a few 100 episodes the pace became horrendous for the anime.

To explain it in few words, two panels of story in the manga can sometimes be 3 minutes on the anime. The intro and outro can be as long as 3 minutes each, with a lengthy recap to follow and even more interruptions as the characters often go back into memory lane to recap some more.

Plus you can skip all the filler without having to go consult a guide.

Yo-ho-ho he took a bite o' Gum Gum. I grew to love that theme but it can't be understated, that 4kids edit of the show is a travesty. Cuts out a butt ton of the coolest stuff and replaces the OST with the typical placeholder synth nightmare they use for all the 4kids dubbed anime. If nothing else the musical score is the sole reason to watch this series as opposed to reading it. Yeah it's less convenient but the music scored to scenes makes the highs in the story insurmountably high. Based on this video this game reminds a bit too much of the worst parts of One Piece World Red and the worst parts of those free roaming Naruto games. As a fan of the show I think this game doesn't look very good or worth playing to be honest. But hey I guess other than Ninja Storm and FighterZ Bandai Namco have been producing more bad games than good ones recently. Pirate Warriors 2 is probably my favorite One Piece game, and PW3 is pretty good too but you know, they're musou as heck.

@topcyclist: Wow your friend sure has peculiar tastes. He likes God Like narrative (berserk) and piss poor narrative (Food wars) they are on opposite spectrum (i know that because i read them) To say OP is trash is strange.

The only game I played that actually gives the One Piece world a proper treatment is One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3

Be warned that game is a Dinasty warriors type of game, but it spans through all of One Piece history until dressrosa and pretty much explains major plot points, so its a good replacement for people that don't have the time to watch the show and get introduced to the characters&world

But I did hear the manga is going off the rails currently. I just liked the anime.

I don’t get all the trophies in games very often, but I got the Platinum in this game. It has severe problems, but I did literally everything there was to do for some reason and enjoyed it.

I think I might be insane.

@topcyclist: I used to really enjoy One Piece, some really good pacing & moments but it's getting so hard to watch these days. 100+ episode arcs and FAR too much padding in each episode are killing it for me but after 800+ episodes I'm too far in to not see how it ends.

I'd 100% recommend watching the first few hundred episodes though at least. It's definitely no Berserk but there's some good shit there.

If you want to get into One Piece, watch up unil after the Saboady arc and then start reading. The anime starts to very slowly and then very sharply fall off a cliff from that point on. As mentioned, in some of the newer arcs, two panels of the manga can equate to about 3-5 minute scenes in the anime.

I really do believe it's one of the best manga out there, but the length is definitely intimidating.

The only reason why One Piece anime took such a fall is because after the Saboady arc or on the previous to that arc, the anime studio stopped making Filler arc episodes and I suspect because they saw the backlash Naruto's filler arcs did to the series. So they opted for the DBZ route and now stretch animations and fill episodes with random grunts that are solely there so Luffy and crew can beat the crap out of them.

IMO watching OP right now trying to catch up to the current is borderline impossible. For some it starts being a chore after Arabasta, but without spoiling much its from there on that SHIT starts getting crazy good, and small conversations or statements might lead to big things in current episodes. (Oda has layed out a plan and he is stinking to it)

I've seen it all but if I ever wanted to rewatch it I would wait for a "KAI" version of it, maybe in like 10 years or so (cause things are reaching a boiling point and there is not much left, maybe 4 arcs till we see the end of the manga)

So... ummm.... Nami is pretty big into laser hair removal I guess.

As a manga reader once upon a time, I do feel like the characters have gotten more extreme... like, you always been able to see Nami's pubis?

@someoneproud: I feel the same way but I think its because it's starting to catch up to the manga that they stretch it out so much. Im still very much liking One Piece but these last couple arcs have been so long and dragged out that it kills some of my enjoyment of the series.

Still going to play this game, but looks like this won't be the game I was hoping it would be. One Piece still needs its FighterZ in the world of video games.

I think these two videos do a really good job explaining why One Piece is as popular as it is. It's not perfect (I agree about the character design, especially in regards to women) but there is something about the overall story that I don't think you can find anywhere else. As for those who want to catch up or start, it's mentioned on the second video, but read the manga and use the anime as a companion piece. Oda is a master at conveying emotion through his art, and the voice actors and soundtrack compound that. As an example, even though I know the entire context and future events, I still tear up for a boat every time I watch a specific scene. So read the manga, and if there are any scenes that you really like, check out that scene from the anime.

Luffy's absolutely shredded abs are disconcerting considering his build and voice.

They changed it in the latest dub so he says "I left everything I own in one place", I guess to be more accurate to the original japanese. But it just makes me want to call the show One Place.

This game looks...bad.

I made it like 500 episodes into One Piece before I had to stop watching it. I still love the weird character designs and the cool stuff they do with their powers but I just couldn't deal with all the anime flashbacks and slow pace anymore.

Jan like most people in the comments I would recommend reading the manga. It will be a lot quicker to go through and after awhile the anime has major pacing issues due them releasing an episode a week for the whole year (I wish One Piece got My Hero Academia treatment). You can read the whole series online pretty cheap at VIZ.com.

As per the woman design they use to be a lot better and a lot more diverse (older women are generally better design in one piece too). When Nami was introduce her bust size was a lot smaller and there was a lot less fan service. Oda the mangaka change the design of the female character to please the target audience of the manga (teenage boys). Believe it or not it is a little more tame in the manga compared to the anime.

Setting all of that I side one piece is awesome.

Yep! It's really incredible.

I have read a lot of the manga (I recommend seeking out the colorized versions online) and somewhere around 830 of the current 876 anime episodes released. I am going against the grain and saying commit to it and watch all eight to nine hundred episodes! Three episodes a day will take less than a year to get through. Just make sure you watch the subbed version. I found funnier and tonally, the voices sound better in Japanese.

Man, I like One Piece but this seems so void of charm and personality the show has. Is there no music at all at most of the quick look?

The combat seems really bad too, lifeless character models you're hitting with no real sign of impact or anything.

I disagree with Ben's blanket statement that Robin looks like Nami with different hair. The problem with Oda's female characters is that they usually look like Robin OR Nami.

I get everyone on the GB Staff not liking the art style in One Piece. I literally had the same opinion that the art style looked weird. At the time it was the early 2000's when I was looking for some new anime to watch because I was done with Dragon Ball and Rurouni Kenshin. I liked Naruto at the time because the anime had just started and was gaining momentum but I needed something else to watch.

Then I finally just took the plunge and started watching and the series is a slow start but roughly 15 to 20 episodes in I realized I was fucking hooked.

I recommend if anyone is on the fence with this show just watch the first 50 episodes which is the West Blue saga and if you aren't into the show after that then it's not for you.

Now that being said this game looks bland as hell.

I nominate this for best quick look intro 2019. I don't even care what else happens this year, this HAS to be at least in the top ten intros for this year.

Jan would make a fantastic voice actor. I couldn't tell it was him (honestly thought it was Jason for a bit) and his inflection was perfect.

Why does Luffy have X-shaped chest hair like Zangief? Anime is weird.

God, his eyes...it's just way too much to handle.

I feel like I'd love this series if there was a Kai-esque abridged version. (not funny ha-ha internet humor Abridged).

I have a special place in my heart for extremely dumb and/or weird skills and powers being used to tremendous effect, and this has that in spades.
