Wow, you really didn't think this through.

When Patrick started talking about how Nintendo isn't true to their old self I stopped watching. What a complete dolt. Would you rather them release the same game over and over again? I personally still hold nintendo in the highest regard because their games are always fucking awesome, minus the boring NSMB that they cash in on.

Also, the games that Sony is releasing are, mostly, games that Sony did not develop in house. They were just publishers for a percentage of them.

Patrick had a completely valid point. If you would of listened instead of making assumptions you would of seen what he was complaining about but instead you shut it off like an angry fanboy.

Lol... like WretchedNinja said, some people didn't think this through.

Loved the Ocarina of Time commentary, bonus features, soundtrack, behind the scenes..

OH WAIT.. they did none of those things.

erm ... they gave you a friggin' soundtrack CD for free if you registered the game. doesn't negate the lack of other things but it's also definitely not nothing!

That was a limited time promotion. I didn't get jack shit for registering OoT3D.

Patrick is absolutely right about the way Nintendo treats their history. I can think of no better examples of that than both the Zelda Collectors Edition and the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Both were extremely cool collections to put out, but Zelda was basically impossible to get because it was only a pre-order bonus for Wind Waker. Metroid Prime Trilogy, on the other hand, was thankfully sold at retail - for about 8 months, when Nintendo announced it would be discontinued. New copies of either collection can sometimes go for $100 these days.

And they are always so bare bones. Rarely is there anything cool in the way of extras included with them; in the case of the Mario 25th Anniversary Collection, it was literally just a 3mb SNES ROM of Mario All-Stars and the Virtual Console emulator pressed on to a 4gb DVD - and they had the guts to sell it with a separate soundtrack CD, even though they could've fit all of that music and much much more on the same disc as the games.

I really like the idea of these collections coming with DVD-style bonus features and while more and more developers are doing that, Nintendo would rather just funnel all of that stuff in to eShop downloads so they can charge you separately for each individual version of a game. I mean, no surprise, but Nintendo is kind of out of touch with the more luxury elements of gaming.

I probably shouldn't dignify you with a response but you must have missed the part where the Ocarina of Time remake got five fucking stars.

Grave Diggers GOTY all years. Clean it up a bit and release it for $5. Same with Duke War!!

And about Nintendo re-releases, they usually suck, besides the Pokemon remakes which are great (though I hope they stop at G/S remakes). And other random stuff like Fire Emblem.

You know, this collection kind of pisses me off, but not because of the usual reasons. I already bought Journey and Flower on PSN (don't own flOw) and the extra loads of content look fucking great, but it's not worth it considering I already sunk $25 into the downloadable titles. Dammit... That being said, buying flOW and getting the soundtracks to Journey and Flower are almost worth it. And I love behind the scenes shit for games... I don't know. Damn my lack of foresight on a collection like this.

I was talking about their treatment of their rich history, duder. Take a nap, come back, chill out.

Yeah, no one is questioning the quality of their current stuff.. but to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. they simply re-released Super Mario All-Stars on a Wii disc. No additional content.. no celebration of the series at all. I don't think it is out of line to say they could be doing more.

The Mario anniversary was quite disappointing, yeah. Almost like they didn't need to tell us why Mario is cool. So to say they don't put much effort into "special editions" is accurate. But that doesn't mean they won't. The Kirby anniversary collection looks downright amazing by comparison to Mario's. Emulation galore, new challenge missions, a hall of fame history that also contextualises things like the European union, the DVD format, and Janet Reno... ;)

Overall, Nintendo is better at fan service: Smash Bros., Tetris DS, Warioware, Punch-Out, Metroid Pinball, Mario & Luigi RPGs... dare I say even the Game & Watch collections. But why couldn't they have some throwback Punch-Out stuff, or include a code for the "original" on VC? That is so simple, and such an easy win. Metroid Prime could be linked to Fusion, but the 8-bit original Metroid was an unlockable before Virtual Console even existed. Why hide that away? Selling SKUs seems more important than just celebrating these awesome properties that most people have already bought twice.

Now that Nintendo Power is well and truly gone, I hope they will offer more on the website, and more in the retail collections, to satisfy the diehards. Maybe you can't charge a fair price for 20 Mario games on one disc. Maybe nobody wants to relive the CD-i Zeldas even if they had the rights. But almost every developer still works there. Iwata loves to pull back the curtain. Even if you can't collect 25 years of TV commercials, sit Shiggy down for some interviews, let's watch him play 1-1. Iwata Plays... Kirby. Grrr.

EDIT: Just had this Hyrule Historia pop up in my Amazon feed. So... we're getting there. :) I wonder if it's already out in Japan?

I think there's a big difference between putting out little jokey game jam games and putting out prototypes of cherished games. I think they could be interesting to see, but they could also lay bare the innards of games people have very fond memories of in unsettling ways. If you're a company like Nintendo or Thatgamecompany that sells magic (okay, a little cheesy, but you know what I mean), pulling back the curtain may not be the best move.

Patrick talks about them like they're an automatic win, but I'm not so sure they are, and I'm not sure there's a huge demand for them outside of the tiny fraction of the gaming community that cares about game jams and such.

Hey, Studio Manager from thatgamecompany here. That was a pretty great video for the Journey Collector's Edition, I really want to thank you guys for posting it. I had to sign up for an account here just so I can tell you how much we enjoyed watching!

I had the video playing here in the office when a small crowd started gathering nearby to watch. John E., Jacky, Jenova and I shared some good laughs watching you guys make your way through Gravediggers and Duke War!! Thanks so much for helping put smiles on all our faces here. It was definitely worth a few minutes of downtime to enjoy your commentary and playthroughs. :)

@eccentrix: They're giving kudos for releasing the source materials with respect. Sony has always been up front that most of the colllection or "HD" versions are just upconversions rendering at higher resolution, not full remakes. The whole packages are less than a new game, and usually include a ton of extra content. Edit: not to mention multiple games.

OOT3D isn't quite the same thing, but was also the highest pricing tier for a 3DS game, included no extra content, and was touted as a remake when most of the changes were the same things that Sony does for their HD re-releases. Remakes are actually remaking the game, for example, the Kings Quest 1/2/Quest For Glory 2 remakes that "Anonymous Game Developers" have done. Edit: another good example, Resident Evil for the Gamecube

That being said, OOT3D is still great, but they're not really the same thing, so please calm your undeserved rage.

I'm glad they're doing this. My PS3, personally - for whatever reason - stopped connecting to the internet in March of this year. Suddenly, I wish a ton more PSN games were collected and gathered up and put on a physical disc. Especially since this last summer was so shit for game releases. I was a fan of when Capcom released their Xbox Live Arcade Collection - I'm shocked more publishers don't do that during the slow summer months.

Sega, for example, could've collected both Sonic 4 Episodes and released it on disc. A publisher like THQ could've gotten a deal in place to release games like Super Meat Boy and Dust Force on disc, as some sort of "Brutal Indie Platformer Collection". Honestly, all the publishers who are hurting financially should be doing this - it seems like a really cheap way to make some money and get these games to gamers who aren't internet supported. Or for something like Bionic Command ReArmed 2, where the DRM on it is bullshit and you can't play it if you're not connected to the internet.

Journey was one of my favourite games of the past few years, wonderful experience. Enjoyed Flower a great deal to. Seems like an interesting collection if I hadn't already bought the games. The developer commentaries might actually tempt me though, would be fascinated to hear more about the game.

I'm more and more suspicious that Duke War is, in fact, a Progress Quest clone. The King doesn't seem to do anything. The money pickups don't seem logical. Who knows if the number of followers even matters. I suspect it to be some kind of un-game human behavior experiment!
