What I'm pretty sure was over a decade ago, my life took an unexpected turn when I found the original GBC Shantae at GameStop and bought it because it had a pretty genie girl on the cover.

Wayforward was tricking little girls into buying hellish platformers and I love them for it. Conceptually, Shantae has been a favorite series of mine from that purchase onward.

The fact that the physical game was later worth a small fortune also felt pretty good.

@nethlem: Yeah, as Syndrom said, there isn't a PC version of Shadow Complex. 360 exclusive. If it was on PC I would get it instantly.

Man. That rock dude with the "NO" sign makes me want a Banjo-Kazooie Metroidvania so badly. What a perfect fit that would be for that franchise.

Man, I really try not to let one thing turn me off of a game, but the high-res menus and character portraits look awful. It makes the whole thing feel like a low-rent Flash game despite some pretty nice pixel art. It reminds me of the slapdash early-2000s interfaces Brad was talking about on the Bombcast this week.

I think most people probably played Shantae: Risky's Revenge on the 3DS, especially since most of the early eShop games were DSI titles.

This re-release is sorta part of their Kickstarter campaign, they want to stir up interest in the franchise and a lot of eyes are on Steam right now, especially since barely anything is coming out on consoles right now.

Shantae and the Pirates Curse is the upcoming eShop exclusive game, which was a 3DS exclusive when their Kickstarter project was announced but apparently it is coming to WiiU now as well.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is the Kickstarter game coming to almost everything (except 3DS). The idea was to fund a Shantae with HD graphics that could be released on Consoles. It is kinda weird that both games are seemingly coming out around the same time and now that Pirates Curse is coming to WiiU it is a little hard to parse the intention of both titles.

Just played Guacamelee earlier this year, and that is one AMAZING Metroid-vania game, almost right up there with Super Metroid. I should try to find the time to play Shadow Complex and Symphony of the Night, the guys talk it up so much.

I've heard some good things about La-Mulana too, but its supposedly one of the hardest games ever made.

Okay, so I've played Guacamelee with an ex-friend of mine and I gotta say, it's not very good as a co-op experience. In combat you don't interact much with each other, I would've loved something like tag team attacks or chaining throws into a more damaging attack instead of it cancelling the damage when the second player grabs the thrown enemy. Also, some of the jumping sections, especially near the end were really frustrating with two players, so much so that I remember her simply dropping out in a bunch of sections, like most of the last fortress and many optional upgrade rooms, and letting me do them by myself instead.

Other than that I feel like the upgrade system and world exploration isn't as solid, I was never on the look out for hidden goodies because 1) they were really easy to find anyway and 2) I just didn't care. Then there's also the optional sidequests that you have no way of tracking. And something that I found grating but she was totally into: all the memes and videogame references. So that one depends on your taste.

It was still a good game and I generally enjoyed playing it (the excellent music and distinct style helped), but I wouldn't put it up there with Super Metroid, SotN or Order of Ecclesia.

And yeah, La-Mulana is a motherfucker of a game. But it's super fun if you don't mind some frustration and stumbling around not knowing what to do. This tutorial's great, though. Pretty funny, too.

Am I the only one who remembers Dixie Kong? She's gotta be one of the first hair-whippers.
