I've been in some form of Goon Squad ever since our first Everquest guild over a decade ago. I've never played Eve but I loved listening to this and watching it play out in real time on the SA forums. I'd love to read a book from the perspective of war/battle losers throughout the years as we've rampaged across the MMO landscape. When we first started they called us goons, then zergs, then swarms... we are just a group of people that love to have fun in online games. Plus, every good story needs a complex villain. ;)

I've flown with the Pandemic legion guys a few times. The army like orders and incredible leadership was pretty staggering.

Love these guys too bad i don't have the time to play anymore.

Too bad the losers always die or mysteriously disappear in most cases.

I don't play EVE Online. I don't want to invest the time required to really do it. But this outstanding coverage of the event is super fascinating!

I think Manny meant to reference Any Given Sunday. Not Remember the Titans.

@subjugation: You clearly missed Remember the TitansRemastered in which Denzel Washington is digitally replaced with Al Pacino in blackface performing the exact same lines. It's a truly post-modern take on the racial tensions of late 20th century America.

I still don't get what the "bill" was for. Is it some kind of protection racket Goon Swarm is running?

@vuud: In order to keep sovereignty you have to pay a monthly fee to an NPC entity, basically a way to remove some ISK from the game.

@renahzor: So if they don't pay that fee then they are open to attack without repercussions?

Still surprised that @patrickklepek didn't capitalise on the opportunity for a sick titan-based pun like, "I'm sure you'll be spending the next few months REMEMBERING YOUR TITANS AMIRITE?!?!?!"

Seriously though, the coverage on this event has been so damn cool.

Well, they are open to attack 24/7 always from other players but if they pay the fee and "own" the system the attacker has to go through the whole "sov attack cycle" which gives the defender 3 opportunities to defend the system, over the course of like a week. If they don't pay the fee, the defender only has 8 hours to defend. Basically. Flowchart here: http://cdn1.eveonline.com/community/devblog/2009/sov_flowchart.jpg

It's really incredible how closely the tone this pair of interviews mirrors every post major sports event interview conducted with coaches ever. You have the cocksure winner who is absolutely sure that everything he did led up to this, and the chastened and circumspect loser who downplays and looks to the future.

"And there you have it. What a season, what a season."

This is true. I do wonder if Manny is always so gracious, or if it was just the only attitude he could take on when put in this position.

On the other hand, he does sound like he's been around the block a few times compared to the Mittani, unless I'm really misjudging the latter's age. Still, the manner of speech of Manny suggests that even if he were on the winning side, he probably isn't nearly the level of douchebag that the Mittani seems to be.
