The Very Online Show 24: Gentleminions

Tamoor Hussain and Lucy James are very online. Jeff Bakalar is only sorta online.

It is with all love to Lucy I say the following statements:

A) Being on the Morbius discord is exactly the same as posting Minions facebook memes. One to one. Apples to apples.

B) Shrek is pound for pound worse than Minions. Artistically and culturally.

Every generation believes that the young people are wrong and have bad taste in things. It's easy to just look at stuff and be like, "Stuff was better when I was a kid." A bunch of adults talking about how stupid kids' movies are isn't particularly interesting or useful: the audience of a kids' movie isn't reading reviews for that movie, and they're seeing the movie anyways because their parents are taking them. It is with these caveats that I see this:

Minions are so fucking stupid. Children deserve and are capable of understanding better movies than these.

I don't think it's fair to judge the minions so harshly when you guys haven't seen any of the movies. I saw the 2015 Minions movie and it was actually pretty decent, and pretty funny. You can't judge the humor of the movies just based on small clips and shitty memes. You have to actually watch a movie in order to judge it.

I watched Despicable Me when I was in high school and it came out and genuinely liked it. I watched it again recently and thought it was a very funny movie. I'm not sure it's really a "gen z" only thing. I get the Minions over advertised thing, I'm not sure there's an irony-to-enjoyment effect going on, I've always genuinely enjoyed them.

I also found it cool how Illumination was able to go from nothing to have a breakout sucess like Despicable Me to being a well-established studio now working on the Mario movie. I think it would've been interesting to compare this more to Morbius, and how the meme culture of Morbius was about how bad it was, whereas Rise of Gru seems to be a well-regarded.

I have to say that Jeff's dismissal of everything, from Minions to Bridgerton is not very entertaining. It's not like Bridgerton is just "trash TV".

I find the topic of this episode funny because I almost called into the dump truck last week to admit my dark secret:

I like the Minions.

Yes, seriously. They're really not that bad. Sure they hit a bit of a saturation point in the mid-2000s, but the movies actually have some pretty funny parts. I've watched them again recently cause my daughter really enjoys them. Hating on Minions definitely feels like the 'cool' thing to do when in reality half the people probably haven't actually seen any of the movies.

Also their World Cup ad is still one of my favorites.

@big_denim: Maybe it IS because I have kids or there is some Minion Yellow colored parasite that has invaded my brain but I have definitely mellowed out when it comes to The Minions. I've only seen Despicable Me 1 and part of Minions but I don't find them as offensive as I used to.

They're goofy lil goofballs and that's ok.

Yaay I'm glad TVOS is back!

Minions suck, yes they're everywhere and annoying, but mostly I think they're aesthetically hideous.
Eye-stinging yellow coloured vaguely twinkie shaped blobs with perfectly spherical eyes and overalls.

Anyway unrelated the Swedish flag is minion coloured.

I recently watched all the Despicable Mes and the first Minions movie and they’re fine. The Minions are cute and occasionally funny. It’s slapstick for kids, just kinda goofy fun. Don’t really get all the hate lol.

I couldn't believe that either. It was like the Seinfeld episode when Elaine yada yada'd sex.

The cycle of hate turning into ironic love turning into actual love is a strange thing. The Star Wars prequels went through the same thing, I think. I'd bet marketers are starting to get clued into this phenomenon and harness it...

Lucy's utter disdain for the minions feels weirdly over-serious. Lowest common denominator just feels like an expression that gets bandied about when there's no real alternative analysis or breakdown as to why someone doesn't like a thing.

The films are fun, the memes are shit. There's nothing more to it than that.
