Somehow this quicklook makes me miss the Escape Velocity games, maybe it's the pirate fleets and various other factions clashing while you take potshots. I wish someone would make a real EV sequel. Anyways, back on topic, this game looks pretty cool.

Jeff explained why they don't do this on his blog.

"Unfinished is primarily meant for games that don’t have a lot to them, like some Early Access games or cases where we get footage (either footage we’ve shot ourselves or provided B-roll) instead of a game we can properly play ourselves. Unfinished videos typically get a date or a version number or some other sort of indicator that will allow us to check in on a game multiple times during its development without confusing people as to which video is which or why we’d do multiple “Quick Looks” of the same game."

The Skulls Of The Shogun, well, Skull, design on the engines is a nice touch.

Looks like a fun time. Not being punished for hitting the walls is a nice addition too.

I pretty much agree with you. Tossing a comment out like that smacks more of "look at what I know" instead of really contributing to the conversation. However, it's a pretty common trap to fall into. I'd hate to have my conversations played back to me to see what terms I casually throw around.

Oddly enough this is the game that has me thinking about getting a PS4 - but I wouldn't be surprised to see it on other platforms because I think this is one of those "launching exclusively" titles.

How is this a roguelike? Honestly the term has gotten way too nebulous. When you say "roguelike" I think of something like Shiren the Wanderer.

Invincibility frames. Quite literally frames during which you are invincible. Anyone who knows what a frame is can figure out what that means in half a second. Plus, he was describing it like a Ninja Gaiden roll which is a really great example of invincibility frames.

I don't think 'invincibility frames' is all that obscure. And even if someone hadn't heard it before, they could probably figure it out.

I wonder what it is about Patrick that gets under people's skin so easily.

Personally, I don't mind his personality or what he writes about at all. Dude is alright.

The only thing that bothers me is when he wants to understand a more obscure/niche genre, barely puts in any time, and then says "Oh man, I totally get it now". Like when he played Monster Hunter for like 9 or 10 hours. While that's more than the rest of the GB crew, I also know there are other game journalists for whom Monster Hunter is much more of a passion and have sunk dozens of hours into the series, and I respect their opinions on the series more than Patrick's. Ditto for his strategy game fling, where to his credit he played XCOM and Fire Emblem Awakening, but both of those games are the most streamlined they've ever been and they're on the simpler end of the strategy/tactics game spectrum.

Anyway, maybe I'm extrapolating too much, but "invincibility frames" seems like it's in the same camp. Patrick is not the guy who plays hours and hours of Street Fighter and cares about frame data. I don't think he's some expert who knows where the invincibility frames are in the Dark Souls roll so he can wait until just the right moment almost every time and then roll through an attack.

That being said, I'm not sitting here going "Fuck Patrick's opinion on all games". He put enough time into Spelunky, for example, that he knows his shit pretty well and he clearly isn't just bullshitting when he talks to people about it. By his own admission, though, that's a weird anomaly and he's usually not much of a technical gamer who really cares to know every in and out of a game system (especially if it's a multiplayer game), and instead he is usually more into narrative-focused games.

Dude.

Invincibility frames was, as someone else put it, an off-the-cuff remark that was perfectly applicable to what I was talking about. Do you seriously think I sit around coming up with questions to ask so that I'll look cool? To who? In front of my friends? Am I 12-years-old? I realize that's how I look without a stache, but c'mon.

The term works in the context of a free form Quick Look, especially for a game with a roguelike elements, but it's not one I'd ever use in an article, at least not without explaining what the term meant first.

That said, the psychoanalyzing of our behavior is some of my favorite stuff, please, do go on.

P.S. Bison burgers are really good.
