Good and Bad in Tera
Tera. Could be the ultimate MMORPG... but is not. Let's see why.
Pros:
+ Graphics: very nice, nothing more to say here, nice graphics is not a differentiator today
+ Physics: movement, jumping, riding are really fluent. Unlike even newer games. Point for Tera.
+ Dungeons: Bosses have own mechanics, way more interesting than the usual tank-n-spank
+ Action combat: absolutely amazing way of fighting, both in pve and pvp. I love it! Gear is still quite important, as always, but player skill really pays off and you can win even when out-numbered or out-geared.
+ Crafting: the crafting system is quite nice and useful
Cons:
- Flat character progression. One you are 60, your character can only grind gear, but not improve in any other way - improve skills, unlock combos, etc. Glyphs provide some variety, but are very very limited.
- Guilds as social feature only. This is a big turn off. Being in a guild or not barely affects the gameplay. Having several friends online or even just looking at the open raids queue is enough in most cases. No guild achievements, guild skills, nothing I would expect from such a game.
- No PVP. Well, sure - there is the Alliance War. And you can kill people in the fields. This is not what I have in mind. There are no big PVP opportunities in Tera - like PVP for epic bosses, or PVP for guild castles ownership, nothing from the many features, that make the game spicy and keep people playing.
Summary: Tera is a really really well made game, with HUGE potential, but is terribly lacking what I would call "end game". Equip is obtained via endless grinding on instanced dungeons, once fully equipped there is literally nothing to do.
I would really like to see in the game:
+ Open-world bosses, which we have to pvp for
+ Guild revamp as battle unit, not just social feature. Fight other guild for a territory or a castle will bring game back to life.
