Great story but not a fan of the mechanics

Just beat this today, and while it was entertaining on the whole, I never really got comfortable with the mechanics and how they come together in the gameplay. I never really had enough ammo to gun my way through, and while you might think that's a motivator to use the Darkness powers in at least a supplementary role, I found them cumbersome and inefficient. You can enter into these finishing move animations that give you pickups, but meanwhile you can't get hurt. Fine, but the animations take several seconds and really interrupt the flow of the game. You can pickup spears and fans to impale and decapitate your enemies, but this never seemed like a viable strategy to me late-game, as while you'd be searching for an item to throw, you'd be getting eviscerated by the swarms of enemies.

The story is great, but I just grinded my way through the combat without any real engagement. I know this isn't Starbreeze on this iteration, but coming from a recent playthrough of Chronicles of Riddick Escape From Butcher Bay and Dark Athena, the combat felt a little unsure of itself. Different games, I know, but contrasting experiences.

Its not bad or anything, just not my jam. 0

I can't completly explain why I don't recommend this game. It just wasn't that fun. I played it for 5.1 hours, accoridng to steam, and I wasn't that fun. It wasn't a bad game, don't get me wrong. But...it is just not good enough for me to just say 'you should play this'. If there was a middle option of 'not bad' I would choose that. I would give this game three stars out of 5....
