The project was officially announced in June 2022 during the Summer Games and was expected to be a full, stand-alone title.
In December 2023 Naughty Dog announced they had stopped development of the project and gave the following statement as to how they came to their decision.
"To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage."
The game had been in pre-production while The Last of Us Part II was in development and was to be co-directed by Vinit Agarwal.
