Ditto. I know Dan wanted to go in to this with little information but Rorie would've been easily able to give Dan the info he needed without Jeff mostly guessing from his limited experience.

Fuck no! I got so addicted on vanilla WoW that I dare not touch the game ever again.

I basically did the same thing last Fall. Pretty much had the same experience, too. It was fun to jump into a massive world and run through it doing quests and whatnot. Eventually, I got my fill, though and haven't really gone back since. I think I ended up playing about a month or two.

I love that it's just Dan who has never played an MMO and Jeff who played WoW during vanilla. I wish he would have selected Shaman though as his "beat people up and shoot lightning" guy. Watching him select a staff was cringe worthy lol. Keep going Dan!

I remember the good old days of MMOs with zone wide trains to the entrance, trampling unsuspecting low level players as someone ran away from a horde of orcs or gnolls.

Jeff does indeed know just enough to be dangerous. Entertaining and frustrating in equal measure!

I understand why you would start him off with WoW, but I'm still disappointed. I have played many MMOs and this is one that never grabbed me, even though I tried at least 5-6 times over the years. I just find the world and combat to be super boring and generic and the quest text not even worth reading. Oh yeah, I'm also more of a solo MMO gamer like Jeff, so that might be part of it, though I did spend quite some time with my Linkshell in FF XI.

Unless this is a recent change Shamans can't use swords.

Indeed Enhancement Shaman seems the closest to what Dan wanted though, dual wield maces and throw some lightning, not to mention WOLVES!

Man, Dan really knows *nothing* about this does he? Like, I never got into MMOs either, but I still picked this stuff up through osmosis.

I'm confused if you work in the gaming industry shouldn't you know alot of these questions Dan is asking? or am I just a fool that plays too many games?

I like Dan as much as the next guy, but how can a "game journalist" not know the basic concept of race and class in RPG game?

I wish I was not a broken person who has a hard time watching people play games at peak efficiency.

So many times I was trying to click stuff on the screen while watching this. I've played way too much WoW....

This is so funny, but at the same time hard to watch. There so many simple things in wow that I just presume people would know that Dan's tripping up on, quite interesting to watch.

When Dan said "Do you Think I am making a bad decision?" I could almost hear the echoes of people screaming at their monitor.
Between Dan's inexperience of any MMORPG trope of any kind and Jeff's 10 year old information, this is just the best.

Sir Dan is quickly growing on me.

So, for me, Wow is one of those accidental token games.

I had been playing Lineage, Priston Tale and Ragnarok Online many years before Wow came out and to me, Wow always felt shallow, simple and mechanically very boring (I also remember that back in the day, I thought that it looked extremely ugly, even if the art style was very good).It might have been the same for Everquest, but i never played that.

However, being blizzard, the wealth of content and lore became gigantic almost immediately. And people became instantly invested in the massive amount of fluff that composed the game.

However, I always felt that the game was mediocre at best, wow builds and combat were extremely linear, particularly once you advanced into higher level instances and Raids. There's a structured correct rotation, a structured correct talent allocation, and a defined set of required gear, which never really provides any meaningful exploration or flexibility.

It simply turns into a pavlovian hamster-wheel for the latest gear, with little to no real mechanical creativity. Which is a real shame, since this style of gameplay seeped so profoundly into the status-quo of MMOs.

In comparison Ragnarok required precise strategic inputs, and elements were extremely important, so there was a lot of flexible end game content.

Today I don't understand how I played this for years. So terribly boring.

After what he said about melee and magic was hoping he would look at shaman as that would be the class he would want but then its going to be a fun series whatever they pick.

Anyway, this was a nice feature. It was fascinating to watch a new player's perspective on this and I'm surprised it also puts Guild Wars 2 in a better light, at least for me. Might have to jump back into that one. I don't think I quite appreciated the things GW2 did to polish (and/or do away with) a lot of legacy MMO mechanics I dislike.
