@Dallas_Raines: I would hardly include snow as being a staple of film noir, even big city skylines only occur in some noir movies, where as the majority of them tend to take place in urban areas or small towns. I am guessing that you have only really seen American modern noir movies; big city skylines and snow are usually used heavily in hollywood.

I would definitely say the lack of mood and low-key lighting are why i think it is less noir. I have yet to see much of the game or play it so my opinion is only speculation at the moment. If what we are seeing is only small portions of the game then i will happily say that i was wrong.

I quoted what was important.

Nah, you just quoted before you grasped the point.

@Napalm said:

The rest of that is pretty inconsequential to why I responded to your comment.

But the rest is the point. So your response is the only thing here that keeps being irrelevant. Because you're arguing something that doesn't exist.

@Napalm said:

The game itself isn't realistic. It's supposed to have an old school action movie quality to it.

I know. I know. As I said, stop stating the obvious.

I'll explain in detail so you'll get it; The game asks you to suspend your disbelief in how guns can be handled, just like the movies that inspired the style. However, when you ask me to believe in that, and I have no problem with that, don't tell me a shotgun is suddenly hard to maneuver. I find that limitation to be unnecessary.

Again, I'll make my point extra clear to you; I am not discussing the realism of Max Payne or John Woo action movies. I'm not discussing Max Payne constantly running with arms out. And I'm not under the illusion that the game tries to be anything other than Max Payne. All I'm saying is; shotgun movement limitation seems really unnecessarywithin the context of that game. And the thing you keep arguing was just the counter weight to show my point, it wasn't a point in and of itself.

I certainly hope this clears things out because if not, I'm certainly not wasting more time on it, because we're not finding a cure for cancer, that's for sure.

It's laughable apparent that you've never seen a John Woo film. The importance of John Woo and his directorial style is very important to this series.

It's neither realistic nor practical to run around with big guns or SMGs with your arms stretched out firing for a long time, you would get pretty tired at some point pretty quickly. So if I should suspend my disbelief there, why would a shotgun be such a heavy burden to operate? Besides that, the shotgun is already going to be hampered by rate of fire (depending on make and model, obviously). Who knows, by the time the game comes out it might not even be that big of a deal, I just think it's unnecessary as it stands.

Dunno about Strangehold but I'm pretty sure in previous Max Payne games when you'd leap and land on the floor, Max would awkwardly just lay there.

In relation to long-ago discussion on the Bombcast in regards to ragdoll, I think Rockstart solved it - the ragdoll physics look amazing. Not only do the bodies go limp, but in that close-up sequence with the one guy, the recoil of his shoulder and torso is unlike anything I've seen yet (granted, it's not a lot).

I'm now fully convinced of the mechanics being thorough and solid; everything looks amazing so far. All I have left is small gripes - I wish they'd have kept the single-dot reticule, although that may be an option. Also, he takes his pain pills towards the end of the video, and with the guy talking over I couldn't hear, but I really really really hope they'll keep the iconic chshink sound of the first two games. I always loved going though 6 after a long battle and hearing it go chsh-chsh-chsh-chsh-chsh-chshink. Reminds me of Pac Man CEDX's sound for eating a huge ghost train - the sound just brings forth a burst of adrenaline, making you want to say, "Fuck yeah! Let's do this!"

PS Hopefully they don't fuck up the PC port...

It looks great, but I'm not completely sold on the "Evolution" in gameplay. Torso twisting, bullet time(standing or laying down) was all done in Max Payne and then some. Max Payne 2 was one of my favorite, "just shoot guys" games so I am still excited for it nonetheless.

@Skyfire543: Max Payne 1 & 2 were not Rockstar developed games. They were made by Remedy Entertainment (the Alan Wake guys). You are probably confused because Rockstar published the first one on console and did the PS2 port, they also did the console ports and were the publisher for all versions of Max Payne 2.

A big reason why I'm not sold on Max Payne 3 is because Remedy has no involvement, and because it's using Rockstar's own engine. Which was fine for rendering the open world expanses of GTA4 and RDR, but still felt kind of clunky when it came down to the core feel and mechanics especially compared to something as tight as Max Payne, even after all these years. Plus the PC version of GTA4 was poorly optimized, I'm grateful there is a PC version at all but I do hope they didn't fuck Max Payne up too much.

Max Payne 1 and 2...Not open world, Rockstar games.

1 took me about 9 hours first play through, 2 took me about 7 first play through. Plus they're replayable as shit. I've probably beaten Max Payne 2 10 times and I'm still not bored of it.

If this doesnt have a "Neighbour of the beast" joke I'll be dissapointed. But then I wont give a fuck becuase it's gonna be so damn awesome.

This game looks great. I have to be honest though, it doesn't look revolutionary in any way. These days it is far more difficult to make a truely revolutionary 3rd person shooter, but what they do have seems really polished. Plus, the animations look amazing. I am dissappointed to see such a big step away from noir though.

I'm a Max Payne fan. This started to feel and look like Max Payne..I don't know why it bothers me but I'll accept a bald headed max, it's just he defined his charactor without affecting a charactor part outside his New York cop origons(Italian/Irish/Polish/other).. even the beard looks strange. But I'm hearing it's all in the story.

The most fun I had with both GTA 4 and RDR involved the ragdoll physics, and other euphoria-powered things, can't wait to see how truly amazing all that stuff can be when in a more contained sort of game.
