Check Out Grim Fandango's New Layer of Polish

There's only so much Double Fine can do to a game from 1998, but it's still lookin' great.

I never got to play the original, too young, looking forward to playing this as soon as it comes out!

I remember I got stuck in this game pretty early on, and never went back. This is a good opportunity to retry it.

Man, I already love the voice acting in this! It's shocking to discover this Tony Plana guy hasn't done more!

I will probably replay this when it comes out. I wonder if they'll cut or revise some portions; I remember a driving sequence that was pretty terrible.

@sin4profit: It sounded like they wanted to take any part that controlled poorly and fix it to be more modern/usable.

Looks great though, not every character model and texture is as good as I'd like, but as far as being cleaned up it seems solid.

On paper it doesn't sound like a lot of changes but it's crazy how much of a difference the better models and lighting makes. The characters actually "fit in" with the prerendered backgrounds now.

When you capitalize almost every word, you made it sound like they were releasing a Polish dub.

Tony Plana has had pretty consistent work for years in TV and movies. I'm pretty sure a lot of people will recognise him from Ugly Betty as the father (who was in every episode).

Oh, I know (now, as I googled him shortly upon checking our Fandango page's credits), I was referring to voice acting.

Fuck! Why is Tim Schafer so damn likable? I've completed only a few Double Fine games, but every time I see that man's face or hear him talk, I get this goddamn smile on my face.

I read polish as Polish. I thought that was a pun on a Polish developer working on this for a second.

Love the look and sound of this game but damn if I can get into these click - adventure - puzzle games. Couldn't then or now but I guess the COD crowd will probably enjoy it.

I guess there was no way to get this to 16:9 format without losing a part of the picture. It's a shame, because the cinematics alone are a story worth seeing. Would be nice to have a cinematic aspect ratio, too.

Grim Fandango is one of the best adventures I played, though I found some of the quests impossible to figure out. It's still my favorite adventure game of all times. Done with love and care.

One of the biggest issues with Grim Fandango was that it wasn't even a point-and-click adventure game. You had to run around, picking up items and solving puzzles with Resident Evil-style tank controls. I think that's one of the big changes this revamp is making though.

@cosi83: They replaced all of the old poorly compressed assets with higer quality ones from the original project files and with some of their own work for stuff they couldn't find. I'm not sure if the PC version finally supports mouse controls. They have been talking about it though and invited some modders to the studio to talk about how they did it.

Great, can't wait to play it again. What a charming swan song for adventure games that was.

PS: Looks like there's not much Double Fine hate for this one...

I never played this game but when they said they were remastering the game I expected it to look considerably better than this. It's rather disappointing looking.

I expected more of a remake, honestly kind of disappointed, looks like they just modded the original game with higher res and textures. There isn't much reason to get this if you have the original but its nice for people new to the game i guess...

I played the original around 4 years ago, it is such a great game, but other than having slighlty better textures, no jaggies, and new lightning, its the same game. I will still play it though.

It's nice to see "PC, Mac, and Linux" on more and more games these days. The Vita release is also a nice bonus. I never played it the first time round as I was still playing basically nothing but Pokémon at the time, so this will be a definite buy.

Amazing game, can't wait. Do wish there was a little more post effects going on, like a bit of DOF or something to make it pop, but I can see why they want to stick with the original look more so.

The tank controls weren't the worst part. The fact that your character moved around as if it was stuck to an invisible train track was the most annoying bit. Instead of being able to just walk anywhere you wanted you had to carefully guide Manny along the invisible tracks only being able to turn left or right where the programmers allowed you to do so. In some scenes this was hardly noticable but in other scenes it was so bad it annoyed the h*ll out of me. Hopefully they have remedied that bit. If they also include gamepad support it should be a blast to play through again.

@bbalpert:

In the second episode of The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered, they talk about bringing on the fan who made a point-and-click mod for the original game as a consultant to help them add point and click to the remaster. (Although I don't know if they've committed to point-and-click.)

@kalos: Just watched the video, it all makes sense now. This is an ios port along the lines of that GTA San Andreas game that was just put out recently. Got thrown off by the "remastered" branding.

@xeirus: Maybe I just haven't followed closely enough, but I had assumed with Tim Schafer mentioning the already existence of a fan-made up-res mod that they were gonna do more this go around. Something on the level of Monkey Island 2 would have been great, they could have easily kickstarted it to be worth their while.

It was such a nightmare trying to get this to work on modern PCs - it's a very welcome refresh, however dated it may be. Very much the opposite of how they re-release FF7 on every new platform with no improvement.

I was a big adventure fan and HATED the original controls, I refused to play a seemingly good adventure game, without the ability to lean back in my chair, relax and plod along with the mouse. About time they finally 'fixed' the game so I can enjoy it.
