I would buy this if I had a 3DS and they released this game in Europe.  One of these will probably never happen.

I should clarify. The systems that are in place in this game don't look bad. As a SMT fan I get quite giddy when I see fusing and skill transfaring. The game itself does not look to be any better looking than it's DS counterpart. But I'd like to think my original statement holds true.

Man that was pulse pounding trailer. Demon auctioning and GUITAR RIFFS.

Posted by MisterMouse

you say demon auction houses, and I say I could care less... that does absolutely nothing for me.

Edited by CSXLoser

HOly shit you can choose which skills to inherit???!!! Mind = blown

Never having to deal with trash skills in fusion is a savior

EDIT : Just saw Kuzunoha as a auctioneer xD

Posted by Talon64

I already have the original DS version but the new content (except for the voice acting, what little I've heard was pretty bad) is really making me want to buy a 3DS now.
Posted by punisherkaos

Is it bad im really considering buying a 3ds just for this game?

Posted by SteamPunkJin

That seems kind of....game breaking? I mean if there's no risk to your fusions you're just gonna crank out the perfect set every time...

Posted by CaLe

Suppose it would be cool.. if it was a good game.

Posted by mutha3

I think the fusion system in DS is one of the best in the series along with Devil Summoner 2.

Nah, fusion doesn't work like it does in Persona and they do a  good job of preventing you from just cranking out demons with high-end stuff.

(one of the ways they manage to do this is through the lack of a compendium).

it diidn't in the original, trust me

Posted by mbkish

Is there actually battles in this as well or is this the entire game?

Posted by neoepoch

You could do the same in the original, and it wasn't like you could just put any move on any demon. You had to be choosy.

You also need to keep in  mind of stats. Just because a demon has a high damaging fire attack means nothing when it has low Magic.

It does? All I've heard is that it gets new voice acting, an 8th day, and that's pretty much it. (The wiki agrees with me on those last four words.)

Mutliple difficulty settings? Translation of the bits that were mistakenly left in Japanese? Surely even you'd be able to beat the game now. :P

Posted by Video_Game_King
@Hailinel

I'll give you multiple difficulty levels (even if the easier difficulties will inevitably result in a bow permanently affixed to the protagonist's head), but it's hard to argue in favor of the translation when it isn't even out yet. I'm gonna guess that they'll just copy/paste the script into the rerelease, add the 8th day portion, and then pat themselves on the back, knowing that nobody will point out how stupid it is that every major demon needs to have Bel in their name, like it's fucking Digimon. Also, I'll throw in the "it's a TWEWY rip-off" complaint to piss people off :P. Oh, and touch screen controls, because WHAT!? WHAT!?

They all had "Bel" in their names in the original Japanese, and aside from that one portion that wasn't translated originally, the translation wasn't bad. The point of why those demons all have "Bel" in their names is even made if you bothered to actually pay attention.

And TWEWY and Devil Survivor couldn't be more different. To call it a rip-off is just ignorant to the ludicrous extreme. I mean, really.

Posted by Video_Game_King
@Hailinel

I know why they have Bel in their name (it's to show that they're competing for the Throne of Bel (or whatever it was called; keep in mind that it's been a while since I've played it)), but that doesn't really justify it. Couldn't they have just said "I WILL BE THE DEMON KING!" or something to that effect?

Really? I know that you can disarm the "trapped in Tokyo" part, but the seven day limit? Getting missions from a trendy piece of tech? The focus on death? The countdown timer things (OK, I can see an argument both ways on this one)? Hell, Midori and Shiki are the same effing character! These are too specific to be coincidence or Shin Megami Tensei laying claim to it first.

That's actually the battle music in the trailer. The auction music is more similar to like "casino music" or something.

1. They didn't pull the names out of their asses. They're actual names of mythological beings. I don't know why you're so hung up on this.

2. Well:

  • Devil Survivor's plot lasts seven days (eight in this new version). TWEWY plays out over three weeks.
  • Missions weren't delivered over tech in TWEWY. They were delivered by the Reapers themselves in a variety of methods. Devil Survivor had no "daily challenge" structure beyond figuring out how to extend the day limit/stop the demons/escape.
  • TWEWY's focus on death is far different from the way death is perceived in Devil Survivor. They don't even compare.
  • Countdown timers: A limit on the number of days in Devil Survivor versus the daily time limit in TWEWY. Don't really match.
  • Shiki and Midori? The same character? How do you even begin to justify this line of argument?

Seriously, what the hell, man?

Posted by Video_Game_King
@Hailinel

  1. They pulled the Bel part out of their asses. It's clumsy, and if you think about it, an awkward naming system. Why name yourself Bel before you're King? Wouldn't it make more sense to do it after?
  • Same basic format. (Crap. Weak argument.)
  • What about the damn cell phones? I seem to remember the math guy going crazy with that thing.
  • Fair enough, I'll give you that.
  • Didn't the countdown timers kill the characters in TWEWY if they failed? And couldn't the characters in Devil Survivor extend their timers if they fulfilled certain conditions? Like clearing a mission?
  • They're both highly idealistic, optimistic genki girls I absolutely hate. That's probably enough.
You do realize that I hate Devil Survivor, right? That in mind, all this makes far more sense.

Choosing your skills: the way it ought to be, dammit! I hope this carries into Persona 5, even though I know it won't.

1. No, they didn't, and no it isn't. Go back and play it again. You could use some clarification on that point.

  • The way that time is utilized in both games is completely different. In TWEWY, the time limit is daily. (i.e.: You have X amount of time each day to perform the assigned tasks.) Failure to complete the task on any given day will result in erasure. In Devil Survivor, no such daily limit exists. The number of total days left is the primary concern, and goes up and down based on the actions of the characters. In TWEWY, the players have no control over the time that they have.
  • Since when did a cell phone count as trendy tech?
  • Did...did you pay attention to Shiki's story arc at all? Because she's pretty much not that.
Posted by Video_Game_King
@Hailinel

  1. You really expect me to go back and play it :P?
  • Those are kind of minor differences, though. The overall system is pretty much the same: complete these missions in time, and you get to live. Oh, and you better stick with your friends, because going it alone is a good way to die (Neku and Midori got really lucky).
  • Since the 90s?
  • For much of the game, she is, though. I realize that she's doppleganging her friend or whatever (again, long time since I've touched it), but for a lot of both games, both characters are incredibly similar. Also, a bit odd that you're telling me that she's not somebody I hate :P.

  • You're stretching it to the breaking point in that comparison.
  • Cell phones are a part of everyday life now. I'd hardly call that a sign of being "trendy."
  • A lot of both games? Shiki isn't even in the game's main storyline for much more than the first week and the final day, and it becomes readily apparent that the personality she's putting on is just a front. It's fine if you don't like her, but Midori she ain't.
Posted by Video_Game_King
@Hailinel

  • Not really. (Damn. I hate when arguments end like this.)
  • ....Perhaps we should ignore the word choice, at this point. Not sure it's entirely relevant.
  • I'll have to play the game again to validate those points (again, long-ass time), but I'd hardly call being in at least a third of the game "not a lot".

I wouldn't say it's better than Strange Journey. Different genres and all that, but Strange Journey is an excellent dungeon crawler RPG. The original release of Devil Survivor on the DS has its share of flaws, but VGK has this tendency to blow them cartoonishly out of proportion. I personally have Overclocked preordered and I'm looking forward to giving the game another spin.

This doesn't make lot of sense. You are bidding against AI? How is that exciting or fun? Don't get me wrong I'll probably get this I missed the DS version.
