let me know when there's a game.

<insert generic comment about wanting VersusXIII here>

A great tech demo to get excited for the next gen. It pops out like no other game out on the market. We'll see if this demo is a glimpse of the next gen.

Beards.

Final Warfare? Modern Fantasy?

Edited by SmasheControllers

Was digging the new look, 'til the anime lady appeared.

Looks nice and different, great beard tech.

These demos are worthless, they released an amazing looking VII and that amounted to zilch.

Posted by dlewis3713

I think this franchise has no idea where it is going anymore....

FFXIII-2 left me a bit sour....

But hey guys This looks pretty shiny!

Posted by Ares42

needs more shaky cam.

This is how we beat shooter dominance with magic!

Posted by MagusMaleficus

Gee, let me guess... The terrorist dudes are really the good guys and the high priest dude is secretly an evil sumbitch? (Yeah, I know it's just a tech demo, but you know you were thinking it.)

Posted by owack6

Pretty crummy looking for a tech demo.

Posted by masternater27

Yeah, but it's final fantasy sooooo I couldn't care less unless they're fundamentally changing everything about that series.

That'll be when consoles stop lagging behind by nearly a decade.

Also, people realize this was all on consumer grade desktop hardware, right? Real time? Sheesh.

For fuck's sake, they haven't even released FFv13 yet!

Make it real.

I almost feel bad for square final fantasy is a no win senario people will shit on it no matter what, the expectations are so ridiculously high

Posted by paulunga

This looked great. And then anime girl. I don't mind the anime look but if you're going for realism then stick with it.

Posted by bonkers

I'm into it. I'm also diggin' how they made taking potions look real rough.

Posted by DeadlyWolverine

At first, I thought they were summoning Bahamut, I was like ''Yeah, for sure, this is going down in the Middle-East/Brazil hybrid". Then came the insurgents, or country forces, it seems like Final Fantasy creators love to pit one group against another. I can't say I was overly impressed, the battle-system and story are supposed to be the meat of these games, I could tell there was some materia-like system in what looked like a glass coke bottle. The ability to cure yourself from near death experiences, oh wait, don't we usually do that? But riding dragons, hmm. I need more, you can't expect to convince me from this.

Posted by RedFive

What did I just watch? And what was this running on?

Posted by primalmaster

Loved the bit with the Potion, at least I think it's a potion.

Posted by Rukus

@RedFive: on a modern computer. ~PC master race~

Posted by Plunger369

If the AKs are removed and replace with fantasy-looking gun, I might be into this.

I'm suing Square for new pants......

It didn't seem very polished for a sizzle-reel. There are a lot of small things which took me out of it, the weird lighting properties of the candles and the edges around the glass bottle for example. In fairness, this is probably still a bit ambitious for what the next gen consoles will be able to render in real-time at first so they might not be far off what mid-life games might look like on those systems.

Posted by IBurningStar

This is the most interesting thing they have done in the past five years.

Edited by leebmx

It looks beautiful but you can ring me back when its actually a game......

Posted by ShinMaruku

As long as the FF13 group is out on their ass and they fire Nomura and make a action RPG the game could be pretty good. Japan is king of combat ff has been stuck too long in legacy systems

Posted by BoringK

I'm choosing to be positive about the future of FF. I hope that Square's learned their lesson from this generation and will focus on making one good game instead of trying to make an entire franchise out of it.

Don't hold your breath on that one.

Posted by Enigma777

@BoringK: I gave up hope on that game years ago, but it's still ridiculous.

Way to throw around a term like "real time" real time on what? a render farm? I really don't understand the point of this video.

Sure it looks good but there is no way you will see a game looking like that on a next gen console or even the generation after that.

It's not that far-fetched (except for the scope of some of the dragon shots), it's pretty but it still looks like a high-end DX11 demo.

Now that I can understand and to me this looks like the same tech behind the CG in Versus XIII at least for the last trailer they showed so I doubt if this actually turns out to be in game level of graphics for the next gen FF tittle if it does then I'd be really impressed.

Make a good game.

Akihiko Yoshida!! COME BACK!!! please i need more games with your designs

It's actually running on a PC that is running some heavy hardware. This is also optimized out the nose for just that system, the drivers it runs, and probably overclocked as well, making the most out of DX11 routines.

We'll be lucky to see something half this quality late next generation, in 720p 30fps. Square have a history of tech demos never being lived up to - in pre-rendered CG studio cutscenes in shipped games.

This was fun to watch. If Saturday morning cartoons still existed, and they made this into one, I'd get up early on Saturdays to watch it.

Posted by Tondo

Holy shit. This, Watch Dogs and the new Star Wars are all looking fucking incredible. Next Gen needs to come sooner. I wish we were getting new hardware from MS and Sony this year :(

Posted by Zaxex

I don't like the designs much in this tech demo, so It's hard to get excited about the technology. The visuals and technical prowess weren't among my primary issues with FFXIII either.

This stuff's nice, but there's so much more to games than polygon count, I'd rather play PS2 or earlier FF games than the current ones, and maybe the next one too.
