Good luck... you're gonna need it. I played EVE for almost a year so my recommendation is, READ ONLINE TUTORIALS. There is plenty out there to help you get started. EVE is a complicated game but it makes you feel like you are in control of a real simulation where equipment decisions and tactics mater. Don't get frustrated if you don't get it at first. It takes at least a 2-3 months to get acquainted with all of the stuff that game offers.

There's some really cool concepts behind EVE that are ruined by a few fundamental design choices.

The way skills work (Training time increases exponentially but benefits are linear) makes sure that players with a few years of playtime aren't TOO far ahead.  A very robust economy with pretty indepth crafting and industrial aspects is pretty awesome as well.  Nice environment, nice designs, gave EVE a lot of potential as a game.

Unfortunately, you can't compete in the industrial or crafting sector without a LOT of playtime involved, you won't be able to compete because the player who can make something just 1% more efficient than you can cut your margins into oblivion.  Mining may be one of the most dull tasks in the game, closely followed by the game's combat system (engage target, turn on guns, make sandwich).    The nice thing is you can pick whatever activity you want to do (I went with trading) and don't have to do the boring parts.

However, those are just the pros/cons of the game, the thing that really keeps me away from the game is the community.  The game is based on schadenfreude, getting your kicks from the misery of others.  PvP is all about making sure your opponent loses as much money as possible, and is set back weeks (real time) in progress and assets.  Majority of combat and conflicts aren't fair fights, but one guy in a souped up ship ganking people in ships that would never have a chance, and extorting all their possessions from them.  Not only is griefing allowed, it is actively encouraged by the developers.  From the day you start as a new player, you'll deal with scammers trying to grief you, even if they have no chance to get money from it, just to make your life hell.  So as the people in Eve say, never trust anyone in the game ever.  Everyone is out to get you, and has to be treated as such.  If you play it and anyone ever offers you help, I warn you to proceed with caution.

It IS a pretty pvp focused game, with the available pve content being mind-numbingly boring, so if you don't want a LOT of pvp, I'd shy away from it as well.  If you're a jerk or greifer, you may like the game though, because no other MMO provides the same level of schadenfreude in its pvp.   To me the community in an MMO is the most important thing however, and I just can't play an MMO where EVERY player is out to screw you over.

EDIT: Also, make sure you can afford to support two accounts, it's a necessity for a lot of things in the game.

Could you expand a little on that comment? Why do you need two accounts to play the game? I've heard your other points before and they all seem to be correct, but that you need two accounts for many things in the game is new to me.

They make the game look so intense, when it's about as opposite to intense as you can possibly get. That said I understand why people are into it, CCP are really doing stuff no other developers are. Looking forward to their work on the Vampire Masquerade license.

I tried Eve ages ago and wanted it to be like Elite. Sadly I was mining rocks and probes were doing the exciting work of shooting stuff for me. :(

Crazy thing is this is the first game trailer I've ever seen that is essentially based on a true gameplay story (on a large scale as well).  Eve really is a for a very special breed.

The trailer actually happens in the game. Not the revenge part tho, but the part where you ruthlessly sell assets to other Alliances. Too bad this makes EvE a every-man-is-for-himself type of game.
