Looks cool. When the PC version is discounted (read: ā‚¬10 or less), I'll probably grab it. But I can't help thinking of modern Sonic as a sort of Duke Nukem: a decadent figure that tries just too hard to stay "cool". But with less mysoginy.

@JoeyRavn: I think you're mistaking Sonic for Sega as a whole, but yeah. Hopefully PSO 2 doesn't suck!

The killer whale section of the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game was fairly notorious, though maybe not as notorious as the human/hedgehog romance or several other unwise decisions that game made. Still, I'm kind of surprised Sega felt the need to replicate any part of that disaster.

To all the people here who won't buy the game at $10 or more, then nothing will sway you. If you didn't care about Sonic at full price, a price cut won't do anything for you either. Any game seems good at $10 or less. Even Duke Nukem Forever was fun at a $10 cost.

It says something about the state of the Sonic franchise that even with a handful of good reviews i'm still deeply suspicious of this game...

@Karandras: A handful? There's a lot more than a handful.

People are looking to be negative. Get over it.

Yeah, this is basically the third game in a row that got progressively better. Even Unleashed was half-good already.

The "handful" statement was specifically aimed at the 3DS iteration of this title, sorry, I should have been more clear (I'm generally more hopeful of the handheld Sonic games than the home console releases).

Yah I think they know how Sonic is received so to get an official 85% from the Nintendo Magazine no less is quite an accomplishment.

I think he's actually talking about the killer whale section from Sonic Adventure. I played the abomination that was Sonic 2006 and don't really remember a killer whale in that.

Poor Sega, when the best review quote they can put in a trailer is 85%, you know it's a harsh time for them.

@Jethuty: Just gave me flashbacks to that insane LP a bunch of goons did. The whale jumping was the first section of that game where you had almost no control over what was going on because of its crazy camera and lack of information about what to press and when, so the dudes playing it died constantly and lost their progress after discovering there was no auto-save. A portent of the horrors to come.

I do recall it being in Sonic Adventure too, though. So maybe it's just a thing they bust out every now and again as a trademark? "They liked it the first time the whale showed up, so let's just put it into every other Sonic game from now on"?

I hope in the next Sonic game Big the Cat marries a whale. That would finally validate all my ecchi fan fiction.

So SEGA is happy with an 85% review for the game? No developers are going to get fired or lose any bonuses because of a low Metacritic rating?

It's completely bizarre though, Why even show it? 85% isn't something you scream from the hilltops, there are plenty of organizations that are soft on marks that you can quote. The people who love sonic are going to buy this and 85% isn't going to convince anyone that generally doesn't care about him.
