@Branthog: Playing on the 360, but noticed the same thing post-patch. I can still find games, but it seems that they are rarely full.

I don't get why people say "Battlefield isn't about close quarters", I mean Engineer and Assault classes work great close quarters work great in close quarters, Support are also good and covering tight areas with their light machine-guns and most agressive Recon players get in close anyway (one hit kill with bolt-action rifles being what they are). And there's shotguns and PDWs for ALL classes...

I get why people want big maps, but saying this is for "for CoD babies and console kids" is ridiculous. Even big maps like Operation Firestorm have TONS of close quarter fights in the warehouses or the streets/constrution site in Gulf of Oman.

...though DICE really do need to fix the M320 Dart... that shit is worse than the USAS ever was.

because battlefield is about driving cars/tanks/heli/fighter jets and fooling around a huge map?

at least that's what I got from 1942, BF2 and BC2 :o

I think anyone who really likes the modern Battlefield games knows how much better the infantry stuff has been getting. The vehicles are awesome, but DICE needed to push the on-foot stuff in a new direction and they have been. Battlefield is about more than the stuff you mentioned, it's about teamwork and utilising different classes and skills to win... and I don't see why that can't still be true in these new maps.

Besides, there's more big maps with vehicles than small ones without any already and there's even more on the way after this release... This will be a palette cleanser before the next release.

@Branthog: Empty servers seem to be a US problem, game is still going strong here in Europe. But I agree that the patch ruined a lot of the fun with unnecessary nerfs and introducing a game breaking glitch that they have not yet patched (they did however patch in support for keyboard lights on Alienware keyboards, priorities!)

I tried playing BF3 this week and it feels like kind of a wasteland. Apparently there is an average of 50k people playing, but when you do a server search for large servers (64p) with 1-10 free slots (ie, not full but not empty), I've only gotten about 6-12 results. And of those, most are "THIS ONE MAP 24x7 AND NOTHING ELSE!" and of all of the matching results, like two have KARKAND maps.

I dunno. It kind of feels like it has died off significantly. The game really isn't bad enough to justify some massive retreat, but that kind of seems like what is happening?

Yep, empty servers everywhere. The last patch fucked the game up. The suppression changes are over the top. And they changed basically every gun. Dunno why you would do that a few month after the game got released. It's not as fun as before the 1.04 patch.

I actually prefer some of the smaller maps. Problem with the biggers one like the one set in an oil refinery (i forget the name) is if you're not in a vehicle you're fucked!

I think you missed the meaning of ZmillA's post. These are Call of Duty style console maps, not Battlefield proper maps.

The one thing I've always been enthralled with in Battlefield 3 is that it's pretty fuckin' spectacular at all ranges. After trying to scratch a strange epic-scale warfare itch with trying to get my head around ARMA II last summer I was amazed at the BF3 Alpha in August in how it brought suppression, bipods, vaulting, reviving/resupplying, and simple squad mechanics together to recreate the realistic... what I would call "bullets-are-scary" aspect of games like ARMA II into a setting that was fast, fluid, and intelligently crafted.

Battlefield 3 manages to provide the single best (IMO) FPS gameplay of any game ever with a combination of detailed and realistic animations (firing and reloading), dynamic accuracy, and a great level of bullet damage that in my opinion sits directly in the middle of the "too high" and "too low" gradient.

Now, I must deposit that jet and helicopter gameplay has never been as good as it was in BF2, in my opinion it will never be the same, but BF3 from the beginning has not been BF2-but-with-prettier-graphics, I always thought the shooting gameplay was basic. Sniping was boring, grenade launchers never hurt anybody, and LMGs were inaccurate. BF3 made a major departure adding multiple building interiors even to the Back to Karkand levels. Who knew that being able to clear out buildings in Karkand and Oman would add so much to the sequel?

There is some bullshit to be had, though, with the tightest BF3 maps. The servers doing 24/7 64 player Metro are completely insane, and the TDM on Canals is nothing short of a shotgun meat grinder. But I love me some Grand Bazaar. Like how I loved Ascension, Acta Non Verba, and Oasis (Conquest) in BFBC1, and Laguna Presa (SQDM) and Isla Innocentes in BFBC2... I enjoy the occasional close quarters match.

Variety is the spice of life, yeah? I pride myself as a Battlefield fan in being able to claim that I enjoy and can use every kit, every weapon, every vehicle, every attachment, every perk, on every level and still manage to do well and have a great time.

So just hold on, there is still a dozen maps for you to get your large battles on in, and more expected in the future (including a map pack that is nothing but huge, armor centric ones). I'm just impressed that Battlefield 3 is the first FPS to be able to make shooting other dudes fun whether in an office building or on Caspian Border.

Let players like me have their fun... I'll play Firestorm one match, and Donya Fortress the next, and not miss a beat.

@Chainblast: good rant

Very much enjoy BF3, CQB as much as anything else. I think if I played with a group rather than solo I might tend more toward vehicle maps, but solo I can do a lot more damage on foot.

Reminds me of Red Faction II. Primarily in how the destructibility felt way more scaled down than in the original Red Faction.

Who is looking forward to the 24/7 close quarters servers with 64 players on the PC?

That sounds about as dumb as 24/7 2Fort servers with 32 players in Team Fortress 2. That map in particular definitely wasn't intended for that many players, so it just stalemates incredibly easily because there's a couple good chokepoints you have to defend and then that's that.

I'm okay with getting more CQB maps, as long as it means more large vehicle-heavy conquest maps are also in the pipeline.

The giant maps aren't the only reason I love Battlefield.

Even in the big maps close quarters gets involved.

I'm down for this.

Will still be better than all the other FPS games with smaller focused maps.

i thought GB was supposed to be different? was supposed to be more positive and friendly, not a thousand hater comments from people who probably dont even play BF3

I actually couldn't agree more. I sort of stopped visiting GB because I found myself getting into arguments with people doing this exact thing in a place they didn't need to be doing it. If someone doesn't like something, for one reason or another, they don't need to ruin that space for others. Or attempt to, at least. Then some fool would launch into a free speech this, "I can say whatever I want" that.... And you know what, people can, but at the same time they get judged by what they say and the places they say them start to lose those who act more neighborly. In other words, if I believed in "God", he gave me the ability to piss. That doesn't mean I'm going to apply my stream wherever, and on whatever, I want just because "God" said I could.

On a more Battlefield focused note, this latest trailer kind of sold me on the map pack, where as the previous preview didn't. The reality of the gaming world is that people don't want to pay more than $60 for a game, but will bitch if a company tries to squeeze some more revenue out through additional content. The disgusting part is that in the last 10 years the average cost of a game, to the consumer, has only risen by $10. I highly doubt the budget for Battlefield 1942 was anywhere near the budget for Battlefield 3. People need to wake up and realize that everything costs more. Most things have inflated far beyond that of a video game. You may not like it, I don't, but it is reality and you cannot legitimately blame the game industry for economic inflation.

At least look at it this way, with "Back to Karkand" DICE has shown they're interested in giving the player/consumer excellent bang for buck with their "expansion" packs. Additional paid content is nothing new for the PC crowd.... Battlefield 1942 had 2 paid expansion packs. Battlefield 2 had 1 paid expansion and 2 paid "boosters". Battlefield 2142 had 1 paid expansion. Maybe the content for an expansion is less, more akin to Battlefield 2's "boosters", but if a game cost more to make (Battlefield 3), and people don't want to pay more for that added development cost, you'll end up paying the same for less.

I could rant on, but I won't. It wouldn't matter, LOL. So I'll quite wasting my time and go back to my beer. Cheers. :)

Looks okay, but it doesn't look like what BF3 should be. BF3 was never good at the "CQ-Gun-and-Run" combat. Your character moves too slow, respawn times take too long. It was always suited for a more open, ranged type of combat.

I'll probably be decent enough, but I'm not going to buy it.

EDIT: And I sure hope they have ways of getting rid of the rocket-spam that we see on Metro. That crap's not fun.

I was just thinking the other day about how BF3 was missing an infantry focused set of maps. There is metro but the map is too much of a line and not enough of a circle so battles are very push and pull and more often than not end up being a meat grinder. Small focused maps will be a good shot in the arm for BF3.

Obviously prefer large, open maps for Battlefield, but I'll still pick this up. A little variety could be nice. You can still get some fun and intense firefights in close-quarters even in BF. The game still isn't CoD, because it doesn't play like CoD, and supplying a handful of smaller, "arena" maps isn't going to change that in my mind.

@Monopolized: Well thats cool. Personally I liked the big open maps of BF games a lot more. Then again I just didn't get into BF3 that much as the map design and spawns really didn't appeal to me as much. I played the heck out of 1942 and BF2 but BF3 just kinda came and went for me. I suppose a big part of that is that a lot of my friends just quickly lost interest and playing with randoms is almost akin to torture sometimes.
