As a game outside of any other context, this looks okay. Pirate game! Cool! But it's still so, so disappointing that this is where the Assassin's Creed franchise ended up. They were really doing something special once, that nobody else was doing.

I disagree. The future storyline ranged from bad to awful and the first game wasn't very good. AC is really just about running around a certain time period for most people, and since there aren't any major pirate games, this was a very smart choice.

I think his point is that this game looks cool out of the AC context. If you try to sell my an open world pirate action-adventure game with a lot of the features this game seems to be offering, I'm all ears. As someone who is not a fan of the sci-fi parts of the Assassin's Creed franchise (frankly I think they feel really shoe-horned into most of the games), the moment you tell me that same game is a member of that franchise, I lose interest. It looks like it could be interesting, it is just unfortunate for people like us that this is an Assassin's Creed game, with a lot of the things that entails, instead of just a good open world pirate game.

I just watched an overlong trailer and have to ask: is there really not a single female character of any substance in this game?

I thought the future storyline was kinda boring too, but the appeal for me from Assassin's Creed was always a unique method of exploring interesting historical urban landscapes. AC3 moved away from that in a way I thought was disappointing, and this game appears to have abandoned it almost entirely. Imagine playing AC2 Brotherhood, loving it, and then being told that a few games from now, the whole thing is going to be set on a tiny ship in the middle of a flat, featureless ocean.

I want to climb buildings! I want to fall on people from heights and kill them with bladed weapons, and sneak away in silence and anonymity afterwards, and upgrade my holdings to amass wealth. Piracy and naval combat and ocean grandeur and small settings and firearms: those all sound fun, but I want a game that lets me explore history by climbing high, ornate buildings and secretly stabbing people again.

As much as it was cool in AC1, AC2 and AC:brotherhood, after revelations and 3 the free climbing got kind of old. It was amazing in those first few games to add that kind of dimension to the open world genre but it's not enough anymore.

Even with the parcour elements, AC cities feel more and more empty with each successive game and the story has gone down the drain too.

You really needed something to shake things up and the pirate theme is a smart choice. I'm sure there will be big cities to climb in AC4 but shifting the focus was necessary.

The worst part is that they took an awesome open world pirate game and shoved all that Assassin's Creed assassin/templar bullshit in it.

"These men and women-"

Wait. What women? Like, I saw a few being used as props for slavery or prostitution, but that's it.
