Here's CD Projekt RED's New Thing, Cyberpunk 2077

You mean only 64 years from now we'll have unstoppable killing robots and flying cars, but we're still using bullet-ass bullets? Weeeeaaaak. Good trailer, though.

Pretty lame and tame music for a game that has words "cyber" and "punk" on the title.

Love that with every one of these sorts of trailers, there's someone who as to bitch about the music... who the hell cares.

@ptys: Eh, there are pretty varying reports on that. I think the general consensus among those in the know, is that sex sells sex. Not ice cream, not video games, not cars (alright, that one's debatable) - and that's good, because it's... it's some pretty terrible pandering, to think your customers will fall head over heels for your product if you just throw in some plumb breasts.

On the other hand, let's say they conduct their market research on the default subreddits of Reddit, and they see fifty top comments an hour saying "nice butt lol can i pls touch it pm me" - and then I guess you have the reason why companies equate their target audience with stuff like this.

Exactly my thought about the old school bullet-bullets. I just finnished reading the Ghost in the Shell manga a couple of weeks ago and everything that is shot in that series seems to hella-explode when hit. It seems to me that's a better way to go when fighting superstrong-IMPERVIOUS TO BULLETS-cybernetic people, but maybe I'm crazy.

If first images of your game involve a classically beautiful woman on her knees and a man pressing a gun into her head go back to the fucking drawing board. Jesus.

Ugh, whine, whine, whine. Yeah, every women is a holy unapproachable creature beyond good and evil and even the implication of violence to one of them is unforgivable regardless of circumstance. Did you miss the part where she had gone berserk and killed 14 innocent women and men with her giant arm knives? If you think putting a gun to the head of a dangerous psycho like that is wrong just because she's a pretty woman, you're being very shallow.

This is the future, a time of prosthetic bodies. Her appearance is 100% artificial. There could very well be the brain of a 78 year old man who wanted to look like a beautiful woman, and you wouldn't know. You couldn't know. All you see is the exterior. That's the whole point of this trailer, nothing can be taken at face value anymore and anything is possible. If you want to look handsome, they can do that. If you want to look dumpy and fat yet have the strength of 20 men, they can do that. Its like physical photoshop. You can create anything from scratch and make it truly convincing, and for that reason truth is over. Everyone, no matter what they look like or how well you thought you knew them, they can instantly become a monster ready to turn you inside out. Society no longer works. Every assumption tied to appearance flies straight out the window. Death is all around you. Fear and suspicion is the only sane response. A great set-up for an rpg if you ask me.

One of the reasons why I love reading comments under this video.

Seems a lot of people are upset over the woman's appearance, as if it's the focus of the teaser, when in fact only about 5 seconds of the video show her body. The rest focus' on the guns, bullets and world around them. There's far more "Gun Porn" on show than flesh, but of course no one has a problem with guns, or the murdered bodies lying on the ground. Surprising giving recent events.

Sure, she's an attractive looking (virtual) women, but the choice of clothing hardly seems to be sexualising her, rather it's giving us a clear look at the parts of her body which show she is clearly not human. The arm blades, bullet damage and joints on her arms and legs. Cyborgs and human body augmentation are big parts of the genre.

If it really upsets people then they might want to steer clear of the game. CDPR have gone on record in the past saying they aren't afraid to put mature subjects into their games. They took the source material for the Witcher games and stayed very faithful to that universe, one filled with sex, violence and racism. Because of that we got two amazing games that felt very different in terms of atmosphere to a lot of the other fantasy out there.

I don't want them to shy away from those subject here either. Cyberpunk is filled with grit, darkness, sex violence and perversion. If they don't dig into those themes I'll be sorely disappointed.

@Weatherking: the whole concept of Bullets exploding on impact is also in Warhammer40k universe, particularly the Space Marine faction with their bolter guns. Well, their more like shells than bullets though since each shell is about the size of a grenade with the difference being that the shell penetrates first before exploding, like a torpedo.

Make sure you don't point out of video games are completely fucking awful in regards to objectifying women or else shitty pedantic nerds who fucking love the shit out of women being objectified will feign righteous anger about it. Especially when it's coming from the same company that brought you nude trading cards when you slept with people in the Witcher. Never change Giant Bomb community, never change.

Trading cards was kinda tacky lol. Either way thats the rub with sensationalist art or medium of entertainment. They play to the baser emotions. If there is violence, it drags along the other primal urges with it. A little dangerous is sexy.

Yeah, don't get me started on movies and tv shows that were set "in the near future". Never ever a good idea if you go tech crazy with your settings and stories.

As for Cyberpunk, just look at the core rule book. It's more '80s than early '90s, when it was conceived. But still, one of the more enjoyable RPGs that I've played. Mostly because of it's relatively easy set of rules, especially the combat rules.

I actually think the witcher handles it way better than other games, because sex is actually a topic of discussion in the games. It's more mature about it. Women want it, they talk about the Witcher like he's a boy toy and a good lover and they are often very powerful during all of that. People on the street joke about hiding their wives, when they see you. You can dislike how they do it of course, but just because there's sex, doesn't mean it's sexist.

If CD Projekt RED makes another quantum leap forward from their previous effort, just like they did with The Witcher 2, their new game will be hard to top.

Really curious about the core gameplay mechanics. Will it be first person or third person? Will it be turnbased or an action game with RPG-like character progression?

Either way, I'm giddy for it.

btw. how did The Witcher 2 do on 360 - saleswise?

Just checked... approximately 620k according toVG Chartz. A fraction of its initial PC sales.

I have no problem with boobs, nudity whatever - I played the Witcher and enjoyed it very much. Adult content is great when it is treated in an adult fashion and CD Projeckt know they can do this, as do thier audience so why release a trailer which is just gun porn and titilation - surely it sells everything they do massively short.

If you knew nothing about CD Projedkt and you watched this trailer what would you think? Big mature, adult sophisticated storytelling, fantastic worlds and complex mechanics or boobies and guns?

It just seems pointless.......

Except it shows, you know, the giant, blood covered blades coming out of her arms as she's sitting next to a bunch of dead people.

Alex, both flying cars and killer robots (also, that ain't no robot, man) are waaay easier to accomplish than non-projectile based weapons.

That's pretty much in line with the game fiction and art. In a universe of future guns, cybernetically strong melee, and monomolecular blades, anything less than tank armor isn't going to do much (of course THAT isn't as hard to achieve on a person as can be seen in the trailer) to keep an arm from blowing off. So better to look good.

Lots of hype on the thing, lots of joking about the name of the thing. iMac and iPod were clearly brands, but with iPhone, it was just "stick the letter i before the word for something". People kept joking about iShoes and iKettles and iDildos all over the Internet. Things only reached a fever pitch like that again when the iPad got announced and launched a million iTampon jokes.

Didn't hurt the products much, because the products were pretty cool, but yeah, the years of iPhone, iPad and Wii were rough for product name jokes.

So...we are in agreement the name doesn't matter?

Maybe because the world is run and designed by humans, so having a human form would be the optimal way to transport... Having giant angel wings sounds like fun, until you realize you can't enter any door, walk through narrow corridors or have a seat because there is a big protuberance in your back.

I don't want to presume her intentions either (unlike many people here crying foul based only on her looks), but considering the cyberpunk references, I would guess she is was a companion or infiltration android that went berserk and killed a lot of people... Similar to the replicants in Blade Runner.

I agree that CD Projekt Red is more well-equipped than most developers to handle sex in a mature way, but the examples you're giving don't show sexual maturity so much as they inflate the player's sense of self-worth by telling him he has a big dick.
