Here's Telltale's Minecraft Game in Trailer Form

Will the player choice be anything deeper than "burn down the other players' buildings? (Y/n)" or what?

I'm the only one who gets a Lego Movie vibe from this? I don't understand the negativity this game is getting. Sure it looks like a stupid over the top affair, but so does everything in that Uncharted 4 trailer, at least this game is going for the cartoon aesthetic and not bullshit action movie.

Well, Minecraft is big with the kids so i guess she quality will be low, since the kids will buy it anyway. I cant really see them marketing this to adult.

Why all the telltale hatred for this? Ever since Walking Dead Season 1 they have been putting out great episodic content. (Albeit very slowly in some cases. I'm looking at you Tales from the Borderlands). This is a very strange combination for the two studios but I look forward to at least giving it a try.

This trailer made it seem way to self serious. I was expecting something more whimsical and comedic along the lines of the Lego Movie. Maybe this still is but this trailer did it no service that's for sure.

this looks too god damn stupid to be a real thing, someone tell me that Giant Bomb is just poking fun at Minecraft. On the other hand, millions of parents will buy this for their children to shut them up this holiday.

@ollieg_94: Me neither. I'm pretty excited to read the probably bewildered reviews of the first episode.

But you know... I thought much the same of Tales from the Borderlands when that was announced. I did not expect for it to be my favorite Tell Tale game yet.

I think my trepidation can be boiled down to that moment in the beginning of the trailer where they make the sword out of two blocks and a stick, and it's treated with absolutely no levity. I worry that this game will try to take the world of Minecraft seriously, which in my mind would be a big mistake. It's jarring enough that Patton Oswalt is talking out of the mouth of a stupid-looking block creature... but if somebody cuts a pig and it explodes in a puff of smoke into some pork chops, and it's not at least a little tongue-in-cheek, then I dunno...

Strange times, I remember when Minecraft was this odd and barebones little Java game some dude made. It was just building a shelter to prevent you getting killed in the night.

I remember talking about it with my brother while walking around in a gamecon and someone overheard us and told us he was playing too. Now the whole world is playing it and it's everywhere in multiple forms.

Very curious how this turns out. I have like... no connection to Minecraft, so I don't have a lot of expectation going in.

I like the look of this - a new and interesting way to experience a world that seems to have so much in it. I like writing my own narratives while playing Minecraft with friends based on the stupid stuff we build, but it's going to be great seeing what the minds at Telltale have crafted within this block-filled world.

You can really see why Microsoft wanted Minecraft. I have no interest in Minecraft (or most games that have some sort of equipment building/survival gameplay) but over the weekend I saw so many kids going to MineCon just wearing so much Minecraft merch. One kid was head to toes Minecraft; Top, hoodie, backpack and even a plastic sword. The thing is, Minecraft merch isn't cheap considering how simply the designs of Minecraft are. I feel sorry for the parents in all of this.

Man, you KNOW this is going to sell. Anything with Minecraft on it is instant gold. I might not give a shit about this, but I don't hold it against Telltale for wanting to get a piece of the Minecraft pie.

Edit: Upon watching it again, I'm actually pretty intrigued by it. The cynicism in the comments here is completely unwarranted. The only thing about it I don't like the animation (Or lack thereof) on how the mouths move. It looks really strange.

A little bit younger then teens. Kids eat Minecraft up. There are entire corner sections in bookstores dedicated to Minecraft books; first time I saw it I couldn't believe it, but that shit exists and it sells.

I'd rather play this than Minecraft, though I'm conflicted. There are more than enough Telltale games out and they need to up their quality sooner rather than later.

I'll try anything that Telltale puts out. I've played nearly everything they've ever released (I haven't played Texas Hold'em) and so far the only truly bad thing they've released was the Jurassic Park series and even that had some redeeming qualities if you were willing to put up with the numerous bugs, performance issues and questionable design choices.

Telltale's modus operandi is to take licensed properties and build story-driven adventure games, they've been doing it since Bone and they do it quite well. Sure you can argue that their games have often been a bit buggy, had performance problems on multiple platforms (even PC) and often tended to reuse assets heavily but if you consider they were building budget games it becomes a bit more forgivable. They have also been getting way better on all fronts with their game production recently, they are starting to smooth out a lot of those rough corners, though you might disagree with their current design direction.

Tales from the Borderlands in my opinion is probably their best series since The Walking Dead season 1. It doesn't push their current formula too much but it does bring back the humor from their old series while still offering a lot of interesting choices. The series feels like Borderlands but relies on smart writing and good character work instead of leaning into the meme-fest that Borderlands 2 could sometimes feel like.

So considering how much I am enjoying their take on an existing video game universe I am totally willing to see what they do with Minecraft, which is much more of a blank slate as far as storytelling is concerned.

I'm trying to be optimistic here, since Tales From the Borderlands had no reason to exist and it's actually quite good . . . But man, whew . . . This is the first game that has a unique art style, though. That's a good thing.

Self-aware, quirky and strange. This is the most interesting thing I've seen from Telltale since the first Walking Dead. Of course it could turn out bad, but I'm baffled by the negativity here.

I mean, if you told me they were making a Lego movie I'd assume it would be absolute garbage but everyone seemed to love that. I really have no sense left on how to gauge shit like this. A bad trailer for a terrible idea by two increasingly cynical companies and... I can't confidently assume it'll be terrible because nothing in this world makes sense any more.

The continued decline of Telltale in video form.

Unfortunately this is the smartest move ever by Telltale.

This will quickly become their most sold/profitable title by far. Which sucks for the core audience, granted, but this has mainstream appeal and will make them a LOT of money.

This is true, but I meant more in the creative sense. Telltale has always specialized in licensed works, but this seems like a huge waste of their talent, much like Borderlands. It's like if I see a good writer relegated to a Deadpool comic or something... All I can do is sigh and think of what could have been.

Although to be fair, their take on Borderlands seems infinitely better than the Borderlands games themselves, so it could work out. Time will tell.

[devil's_advocate] This is designed for an audience younger than most readers here, so I'll be interested to see those reactions. Telltale pursuing story-based games for a younger audience could be neat. [/devil's_advocate]

I don't think that the Telltale format can do infinite reiteration. I don't play any of TTG's games, so my opinion is fairly invalid, but is anyone, who has played them, feeling fatigued?

I personally feel it's a self-correcting thing. I adore what I've played of Telltale's games but you pick and choose based on what you're interested in. In practice if you play too many of any game, particularly if they come from a particular house style, you'll feel it a bit.

From the outside looking in I worry less about the "fatigue" and more about the time pressure aspect of the episode format which is compounded when there are the necessary delays to make. Otherwise I'm more than happy Telltale is going strong, even if I play most but not all of what they make.

On the subject of the trailer, this looks like it might have something going for it considering what they had to work with. I suppose the two questions is whether fans of the world will be into it (likely but we'll see) and whether people who don't really care about the world of Minecraft will be kept engaged.

Hmm, well good on Tell Tale for cutting that trailer, it seems to strike the appropriate tone for a game of their style within the framework of Minecraft. I'm more interested to see people recreate all of the, "sets," (if you want to call them that), in this game, in Minecraft proper.

High budget Minecraft Adventure map without jumping puzzles? Pshhh...

(But really whatever. Minecraft is one of the most influential games ever made. Sure it sucks that it's now owned by a big corporation and will be milked until death, but it's not for me anymore. )
