Let's Drink Coffee and Discuss New 3DS Games

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Patrick. You mentioned it at the beginning of your video, and it's something that I think is worth paying attention to: nostalgia, or rather, the perceived play off of. Nintendo has been exceptionally guilty of milking Mario platformers lately, but other than that, they've done a really great job of making solid new entries in respective series' lineage. Part of the challenge I think they face is the fact that many of their game (Zelda, Metroid, M&L, etc.) are essentially archetypes for their respective genres; why go out and invent a new IP just to make a game that's going to end up mechanically similar to what you already have? I think especially in the case of Zelda and Metroid their respective structures are hallmarks of their genres and getting moreof the same isn't actually a bad proposition at all. Hopefully they can put more effort into implementing fun hooks into new entries to mix it up a little bit, but for where so many of their games sit, I don't mind more of the same, and it wouldn't be awful if other developers paid some attention.

Also, thanks for calling out the localization team for the Mario & Luigi games. They do phenomenal work and deserve all the credit they can get!

The return to LttP is also curious to me. There's already a long history of 2D Zelda games on handhelds, and the older ones are pretty damn awesome, so they easily could have just said "we're going back to LttP-style game" instead of making an outright sequel. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks were interesting, but they felt a little gimmicky and limited compared to the older games, so going back to their roots sounds good to me.

The only thing that worries me is their description of it having "all new dungeons" but implying that it's the same overworld. Given that I remember every nook and cranny of that map, they'll have to do a bunch of stuff with it to make it feel new again.

Can't wait to play Mario & Luigi 4! I absolutely adore that franchise! :D

Well aside from Jeff constantly having to go to meetings and Vinny/Drew constantly worrying about video production... what are Brad and Ryan doing?

On top of that, it seems Patrick is the only one actively searching out games to talk about on the site.

Ryan produces the Podcast, and hosts stuff. Brad pretty much just lurks the Forums, and yells at us when we mention him.

Ryan producing the podcast takes like... afew hours though. It's literally Record -> Edit/balance-> Export -> Upload.

I guess there's E3 stuff that they'll be worrying about soon, but that still seems a bit of a ways off, unless they are constantly on the phone and sending e-mails booking appointments to see games.

Due to your efforts I had discovered Tevis Thompson's "Saving Zelda" essay. Since then (and especially after having failed to appreciate Skyward Sword) I have reevaluated my feelings about the series; the presence of a "Zelda" game no longer sells me a console.

Given your appreciation that Majora's Mask "upended the conventions" of the franchise, and that you would be more excited for a game which did so instead of a remake: do you feel like this sequel to "Link to the Past" is going to accomplish that, or do you feel like this is Nintendo "cashing-in" on what has become an historic -- and probably the most well-liked -- game in the franchise? Is it too early to speculate about such things? You saying it "feels like playing a Zelda game" makes me think that it's going to be another (albeit whimsical) checklist bereft of challenge or critical thought.

I loved A Link to the Past, but I was also a child then; I think my present appreciation of gaming is a little more complicated, and I don't really see myself as interested in "going through the motions," as Thompson says.

I wasn't, but I'm glad I checked.

It's not worldwide. In Japan Fire Emblem sold about 450k (a bit of a revival for the series, as it hasn't sold this well since the early SNES days) and Luigi's Mansion is currently at about 500k and will end up selling quite a bit more before it's done. Those numbers are most likely NA only.
