@patrickklepek:Please do NOT watch the anime prologue to VLR. Not only is the prologue just not very good at all, it also ruins something very important that you'll discover by the end of the game. The prologue is clearly not at all canon, and anyone who played the game to completion will know what i mean. Trust me. VLR is my favourite game of 2012 and i hold it in high regard and that anime prologue does more harm than good, I'm glad that I didnt watch it before playing the game.

Edit - Also, June being alive as an adult and child in 999 is explained in 999. She's alive because technically you have already saved her in the past. Which is why during the timelines when you get the Bad Ends she starts feeling sick and phasing out of existence.

Christ, am I some kind of monster for asking if there is any visual stimuli in the freakin video? All I wanted to know was if I could just listen and not need to look at the screen so I didn't miss anything. I've had at least four people bitching at me, dear god this community can be touchy about the oddest things.

It probably doesn't help that you have to say something about the way he's dressed.

I was one of those people that had no idea what the game was about. Finished it once, got a terrible ending and had no idea that it was meant to be played again. I thought that game was dumb, kinda intrigued by the new one on Vita though.

I completely disagree. Can't really explain it without spoiling, but yeah, I totally disagree.

: Regarding June's death/life/death as I came to understand it.

*No spoilers for VLR but tons for 999*

I cant speak to how VLR explains it or doesn't but in playing the game with my girlfriend I came to an explanation that at least made sense to me. Firstly its been a while since I played through this. Secondly, They do address the Seven memory/amnesia thing in that Q&A session. http://www.aksysgames.com/999/answers#24

June has the ability to connect through time in paths that "exist" and don't "exist" (as is shown in the game's multiple paths and endings). Basically all paths that might exist. I think its easier to make sense out of it if you say that June never died in our timeline. In this timeline she connected with Jumpy in a future where she survived the first Nonary. the second nonary game. So her ability to connect telepathically across time is what allowed her to survive. At the instance of her connection she was able to survive due to the timeline she hooked into and all that she had to do then was to insure that that timeline played out exactly as it was supposed to. If you noticed, whenever Junpei gets off track in the timeline she gets weak and starts to fade physically. That's at least how it makes the most sense to me is that it is a terribly cyclical sense of logic that gets employed and the reason it is possible is all because of her ability to connect across all possible timelines that could have existed.

1. She survived because she connected to Junpei

2. because she survived she set up the 2nd nonary game

3. this insures that events needed for her to connect to junpei play out

4. Junpei plays through the second nonary game and connects back to June in 1 however time continues to progress after this connection

5. Past this point the timeline continues and is no longer cyclical because all these events happened in the past. And we know they happened in this way. So it doesn't matter.

I was looking at VLR on the eshop, but didn't pull the trigger. Now I really want to play 999 first, but since it's not available in EU, I just ordered it from videogamesplus for 20 canadian pretend money.

Hopefully it's true that original US DS games work on EU 3DS'.

Well Merry Christmas to me!

@MordeaniisChaos so did it need video? I'm going out to shuffle snow for a couple of hours and this would be sweet to listen to while I work.

EDIT: I just finished VLR and my mind is still reeling, playing these two games, one two punch, must really fuck with your lateral thinking.

Your confusion on how June could be both dead and alive in the past, and alive in the present is understandable, but... Play VLR. It won't give you a straight answer, but it will broaden your understanding of how the universe of Zero Escape works.

Also, since you did one for 999, you are now formally bound to make a spoilercast for VLR :P

I ask this as someone with a huge amount of appreciation and admiration for 999: Why does everyone say that the knowledge you gain from previous playthroughs is crucial to later ones? The primary way the story branches is by choosing what number door you want to go through, and I haven't seen the path to get the true ending discernible in the game. I had to resort to a handy little flowchart I found on Gamefaqs.

The idea of the multiple endings being different timelines sounds exactly the same as the twist in the anime Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

I get this weird feeling that Patrick's enjoyment of 999 is tied to the same preferences that made him a fan of Lost. Now, I liked Lost, but that was years ago, and I find a lot of twist-oriented media just tires me the hell out these days. Regardless, I do enjoy just knowing what the twists are in this series. It's cool that something really good seems to have come out of the Japanese VN culture.

I've never played 999, but I've watched a good deal of Higurashi and by listening to this it feels pretty similar. In the beginning everyone is confused as to what is truly going on in the series. Are they hallucinating? Are these different viewpoints of a single events? Are these retellings of the same scenario with different people switched around? The twist is fantastic in the series because it doesn't provide a solution, but a means by which to solve the problem in the future.

The same could be said for Steins; Gate and to a lesser degree Madoka, but they don't really have the same twists and mystery solving aspect.

Hooray!

Definitely glad to hear you weren't disappointed by the nagging. Glad you could see past the flaws of the actual game part to enjoy the overall, expertly-crafted unique story experience.

I mentioned the Infinity series. Uchikoshi was the lead designer on 999/Virtue's, and also the co-scenario writer for the Infinity series (Never7: The End of Infinity, Ever17: The Out of Infinity, Remember11: The Age of Infinity, and 12Riven: The Psi-Climinal of Integral being the key pieces of that franchise until the studio closed and everyone important went their own separate ways). It's a series I'd recommend for similar sci-fi story twists. Specifically, as I said in the pre-spoilercast thread, I'd recommend Remember11. It's the best story, with the most "what the fuck" moments that will take you years of on and off pondering to completely figure out (or constant scouring of wiki articles). Ever17 was the one which came highly-praised enough to make me leap in, though it might turn you off for being a little too "dating sim-y." Again, like I said, the ultimate payoff makes it well worth the experience if that's your turnoff.

Oh, and it's definitely necessary to note that these are all straight-up visual novels. No puzzle solving, besides the greater puzzle of the story.

On Patrick's recommendation really enjoyed 999, just starting VLR. Wanted to say thanks, also great video.

The answers section of the 999 website has a ton of great questions answered by the writer (spoilers obviously), don't know if Patrick mentioned it: www.aksysgames.com/999/answers Mandatory reading if you've played through the game.

Great video and interesting to watch and listen to the spoilers. But Patrick, please, quit picking your nose.

And Sudoku's easy to learn. 9 squares of 9 blocks, 9 blocks across and down. (Hmmm, 999...) Each square, row and column must contain 1-9 with no repeats. I'm guessing them using Sudoku is to tie into the title, the fact that there are 9 characters you could see as the numbers in a game of Sudoku and the true ending is when you line up all of the numbers just right.
