Every Giant Bomb fan should use the bomb as a topper :D Can't wait for the DLC. This game is so much fun. And even though I own it on Steam already, I also say: Release it for XOne, too!!!

Is that new arena being released? If so they probably won't make it part of the dlc, don't wanna separate the player base.

Yea the stadium is free.

It's almost certainly my GOTY. JC3 might come close to dethroning it, but I'm way too invested in, and in love with Rocket League at this point.

@turboman: For me it's a lock, too. I am 34 and one of those long-time GB subscribers that actually follows this site and its coverage of games more than I actually play them. Rocket League has sunk its claws into me. I'm over the 450 hour mark at this point. Don't think I've been this engaged in a game since my high school Goldeneye 64 days.

Love Psyonix's approach to everything post-launch, too: they're interacting with users on reddit and twitter regularly, listening to feedback and communicating, and continuing to throw new stuff out there. LOVE.

I really don't get the appeal. Sunk about eight hours in to the game and it just seemed dull, like one of those early access proof-of-concepts with one vehicle type/class, arena type and game mode. Even more bewildering is how often you hear the GB crew talk about the awkwardness of car combat games yet Rocket League has the exact same problem and it'll probably end up the most discussed game in the GOTY podcasts.

So colour me shades of meh at the announcement of yet another 'DLC pack' that is nothing but another identical arena and a few hats. Someone wake me when I can do something more than play the world's most dumbed-down game of football with bad controls.

@icaria:Just a couple notes: The new map is shaped differently with different boost placement, the first of an initiative to push more varied and unconventional arenas (so not identical, although not as unusual as some SARPBC maps). The DLC has new cars, all of which are modeled differently and behave different in their physics engine (different hit boxes, turning radius, etc.) which could introduce different play-styles as DLC cars have previously.

I actually think the control is fairly sophisticated between the drifting and multi-axis aerial control, once you're put the time in to really grasp it, which admittedly is probably asking a lot of players not really invested. For me, the game has all the appeal of any established sport but without the laborious process of penalties instated for the safety of the competitors. Although obviously if it just doesn't work for you, what resonated for me probably won't change that.

I'm somewhat with @icaria. It's a really good game and I don't regret buying it, but it's pretty awkward in many ways too. The camera could use work, especially near the goal area (yeah, you can switch cameras, but that viewpoint makes alignment even harder). The controls are okay for basic driving around, but aerial play is hard enough that most casual players won't ever get close.

I feel like it gets a bit of a 'free pass' for some of those issues - not in any grand, conspiracy way, but it's almost as if some people like the idea of Rocket League more than actually playing Rocket League. I put 70+ hours into it, I had fun (online can be a mess, but what can you do), but I found it quite frustrating at times.

Yep. Best part? The more you play it, the more fun it gets. As an Expert, almost Master, with 230+ hours in the game, every time I think I'm the best ever, I match up with some seriously insane dudes that make me play the hardest game of car soccer I've ever even heard of. It's so, so, so fun. GOTY 2015 lock, indeed.

Good to know, thanks. Do any of the base cars have differing stats? Not sure the hitbox thing is so much a feature as it is a bug but regardless doesn't provide anything close to proper class differentiation.

But Rocket League isn't a car combat game?

...

...

buuut you're still trying to aim your car at shit with almost non-existent lateral movement options, hence the comparison.

I think base acceleration etc. are all the same, but the minor differences such as turning radius and hitbox is certainly intended. It may be a byproduct of rationalizing a van's physical appearance and when the ball will hit it vs. a slim sports car, but it is a feature regardless.

I think the main difference between this and car combat games is the objective and the strategy involved in achieving it. In car combat games you are mostly trying to blow other shit up and so when you have to stop, reverse, etc. it feels somewhat anticlimactic and clumsy.

You absolutely do get that in Rocket League, don't get me wrong, but I think it actually benefits RL in that in introduces huge importance in positioning and field awareness. If you go hard for a hit on the ball and you miss, you are suddenly on the other side of the ball and have to turn around and gun it -- in other words, you made a risk play that could have resulted in a big hit, but were punished for missing. This gives the other team an opening.

It's the reason why everyone swarming the ball like a bunch of five year olds playing soccer doesn't work in this game. If you could arbitrarily move any direction, I believe this game would be considerably less fun because those types of considerations would be way less important. And as others have mentioned, they give you enough tools like the lateral roll, boost for mid-air momentum changes, etc., that it doesn't feel too limiting.

Just my two cents. I was really skeptical of this game going in but have been really impressed with its accessibility and depth the more I play it.
