Well Patrick, at least you're able to use this feature at all. Because Microsoft has decided that us Europeans are completely incapable of speaking (proper) English (notice my shaky grammar and many spelling mistakes as I'm writing this) and has disabled the feature for every EU country except England! The only time I've been able to actually use the Kinect voice commands was in Halo Anniversary. And it actually worked quite well despite the fact that I'm Dutch and shouldn't be able to speak American at all (at least according to Microsoft). I guess we'll just have to wait and see if they decide to grant us this feature on the Xbox One. Except we won't find out until September when it becomes available in the Netherlands! Oh, and the PS4 has been available since last Christmas in case you were wondering. So guess which console has been selling better...

With the music, i just kept thinking @patrick was trapped in some detective noir(sp..?) 50s drama. Awesome video, and i thought it was fun exploration of more things, GiantBomb Chicago and Scoops can bring to the site. :)

You said let you know if I wanted more and I do. This is a great little five minute piece of content and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not sure what else you could do these video bites over but I'll watch them, that's for certain. Sometimes I don't have the time for an hour long quicklook. : (

Xbone is ass-backwards! News at 11!

I got one of them too and there are some conveniences with the voice control, like snapping stuff.

Then there's some stuff that I believe they designed to intentionally harass you into using Kinect, such as the way that it *needs* to have Kinect attached to log you in and can't just be set to automatically log into your profile on boot.

Microsoft will really have to show something special at E3 that uses the Kinect in a meaningful way, because if it's just gonna be more shovelware minigame collections, there was no reason to include it with every system sold.

That was pretty sweet. I think this would be an interesting change from written articles.

I actually wish Giant Bomb would do a little more "produced" stuff. Live off-the-cuff streams and videos are great and all, but it only takes the GOTY stuff to let you know how much the crew can do when they put a little time into things.

Hopefully, the acquisition of a new production guy will help in that sense.

Anyway, great video Patrick. Very well done.

The voice search inconsistancy on Xbox 360 and Xbox One between apps and the operating system is much the same as the Kindle Fire TV. The OS and the apps don't work together as you would expect and interestingly Microsoft's and Amazon standards for app creators don't require them to use voice in a consistent way. I think that video and music apps creators would benefit from both Microsoft and Amazon opening their search API to them to improve the experience for everyone. Hopefully this video shines a light on this and we see voice search integrated across both OS and apps in the future.

Whoever decided that controller-input text searches should be carried out on one long A-Z strip in all these apps needs bloody shooting! There's a 'perfectly' functional software keyboard that could be used instead!

The dumbest thing is that Sony actually made a perfect virtual keyboard for controllers in the PS2 era, but then dropped it on the PS3 and later in favor of a qwerty keyboard that's just awkward to navigate with an controller, and the only ones to learn anything from the PS2 were Valve who implemented that flower petal design in Steam's Big Picture Mode.

I'd hate it if Netflix was a big reason people give Kinect 2.0 so much crap. Netflix's UI sucks no matter how you access it.

I don't have a kinect but I also like to use my voice for navigation, writing e-mails and so on.

I found this video infuriating because certainly everything that Patrick wants can be implemented with no problems, this is more someone at Amazon/Netflix failing to do a proper usability study on how to exploit this technology.

Certainly this looks like an App problem but seeing how similar both applications fail at the search in similar ways, I am more inclined to think Microsoft is not providing the API or at least documentation on how to do this.

Great vid Patrick. As someone who went with PS4 i dont have access to Kinect and therefore dont know how its coming along. Im a fan of technology and interested in its progress, i just didnt have 5 bills to watch it stumble up close. Would definitely be into you doing something in this realm, periodically.

I agree with @wjb - I didn't realize this was GB content. You should preface the title with "Video Essay" or something.

You know what they could do to sidestep the whole issue of naming conventions is to just put a little giantbomb logo next to the title of all giantbomb produced content. This would automatically differentiate all of their stuff out clearly from the trailers and marketing videos from publishers.

This is my favorite new format in a long time. Wow.

I usually hate hearing the GB crew doing non-casual-dialogue stuff. It usually sounds so forced and fake and... radio-ey compared to normal. But Patrick really sounded the right balance of prepared and casual.

Super cool.

I've really liked using a combination of voice and the iphone smartglass app when I don't want to touch the controller for netflix/tv, especially when you connect it to volume control and stuff.

I like the whole editorial in video form idea, but I have no idea why anybody wants to control their game console with their voice.
