I really hope this comes to the west and that Sony puts more PSP games on PSN.

@brad Your white PSVita is worthless now!

I just bought a vita 3 weeks ago, thinking "Nah, half a year + until there is a new iteration, might as well buy now."
I also completely bought Nintendo's "No WiiU pricedrop! Go Away!" about 3.5 weeks before they took 50$ off - I am getting really bad at this game. Not that I bought a WiiU mind you

If so: great product!

If not: Half-assed implementation and immediately less worth buying for vita stuff..?

Dual-shock 4 controller has a touchpad on it. This thing is coming out before the PS4 launches in Japan, so it is available with a DS3, as well as that bundle includes a memory card.

Yes, the controller, didn't really think of that.. but.. I believe the ps4 controller touchpad is singletouch or there was some other kind of limitation? Something kinda weird for modern tech that made me go "huh..", don't really remember.
And has the size of not even half a kit-kat bar (yes, thats a real international unit of measurement!), it looks like.

In no way shitting on the product, it looks really cool and, and this is just a feeling, (I own a Vita, a 360, and prefer my PC *disclaimer*) I would haven been infinitely more surprised if Microsoft had announced this. With Sony I just thought "Yeah. That seems really fucking cool. But $stuff?". :)

So even if no "Vita-as-a-controller": That's some great innovation (or rather "evolution") in the field of consoles.

This is up until now is one of the coolest new "features" of the new console generation, come to think of it. That and the tech and some UI implementations in/with the new Kinect - which will sadly never cross my doorstep, so yeah.. ;)

@nashvilleskyline: It's a device that only plays PSV and PSP games, and can be used as a remote hub to access saved content. It can also be used in tandem with the PS4, or by itself.

Smart move to get the the Vita more support and give people a cheap gaming system. Also gives kids and excuse to have their parents get a PS4 in the future.

can someone help me understand what it does ... I'm not too sure I understand it clearly and why these functions should not be implemented directly in the ps4??

putting an arm a9 chip and other vita hardware in the ps4 would be expensive?

Does this play Vita games on its own? 99$ seems kinda cheap when a cheapest Vita is double that.

It doesn't need a screen and no back touch, so thats probably the difference right there

That seems really smart if I can remote play with it. I wonder if you can bring it to a friends house who doesent have a ps4 and remote play on it.

It seems like this device has some cool potential but it still doesn't answer the question of what about games that support the Vita's front and rear touch. Being able to play your PS4 games from a separate room to the console could be awesome however.

Well, it doesn't play all Vita games. Engaget reported this morning that Sony published a list of compatible titles and they spotted that Gravity Rush, Wipeout and Uncharted are absent from it. My guess is this won't play games that look like the PS3 qulaity games, i.e. high-end graphic ones in some cases. So, it is more like an indie game, PSOne, and media streaming box than a Vita alternative.

Still a good value as long as you don't mind also buying those proprietary memory doo-dadds to increase the capacity. For me I'd rather just buy a Vita Slim, but that has more to do with using Vita as a controller on PS4.

Sounds like that they will be putting in DS4 functionality eventually, and that you can sync up a Vita to it so you can play the games that require the touch pad.

I've been waiting for an Xbox version like this--no drive, etc. Thought that was sure to happen. Seems like a really great way to fill out the product line up. Getting that bedroom TV involved. Hope it comes to the US.

I'm impressed by Sony's ability to make all these conferences meaningful and headline-grabbing. I expected next to nothing last night. I wake up and read all this stuff. They really seem to have a good plan so far.

WHERE'S YOUR OUYA NOW?!

I think it'd be more fitting if it used the PS4 controller. There's a touchpad on that thing, so at least there's some parity for Vita games that use[d] the touchpad.

I used to be able to bring my portable games around with me, go home, and continue playing them on the TV with Pokemon Stadium or the GameBoy Player, and going back to that has been my dream for some time. With the Vita, I'm kind of realizing it right now. I just played through Final Fantasy VI, transferring my save to the PS3 when I get home to continue on the TV, and I'm doing the same with Final Fantasy IX now. I remember playing the shit out of games like Final Fantasy IV Advance and Riviera back in college, quick-saving when I got home, and resuming on the television. I want to go back to playing games like that. It was so easy.

If I can play the Persona 4 Golden machine on my TV, consider me sold. That price point seems about right.

This kind of pulls the rug out from under the devs that took advantage of the touch and camera stuff (if I'm reading this all right), but maybe it's for the best.

Why did Turning on the Controller not turn on the PS4 remotely? He had to press the physical button, or was that just a missed opportunity in the video due to poor execution?

Why can't the PS4 just do all of that?

Because Valens only just launched their full-version chip for HDBaseT 2.0, so no companies have it built-in to anything yet.

Now, maybe we could get a version of the PS4 down the road that has this chip in it, but that would also require that someone build a router that supports the protocol, and a way to pick up the BT signals from any other room.

So until then, this little box that allows remote play on another TV is pretty damn nice. The only gripe I have is that the memory card slot and USB connection are in the back.

I'm super in to it, yet more smart moves from sony but I do wonder if streaming to a 1080p screen will make the compression thats not so much of a problem on a little screen unbearable. I found onlive to be a pretty terrible experience really. Maybe wired this would give acceptable quality but will it scale to your bandwidth or will they set the compression algorithm to work on crappy b/g wifi and even if you have gigabit ethernet it will still be a onlive like artefact fest.

I do not have interest in buying a ps4. And I do not own a vita but this looks exciting. Now that sony's developer relations team is really good at getting indie games as well as cross play. This will be a great cheap way to play a lot of those indie games similar to the ouya. Only question will be how will it look pushing vita games to a 1080p possibly 50" or above display? But I was looking to purchase a chromecast or set-top box device. And now one that plays games is now pretty awesome. Hope it comes to NA.

Seriously, how many aces up their sleeves does Sony have each time a game conference show occurs?
