I had a feeling there would be fireworks with this one - the second Lantern Run had some pretty obvious friction between Will and Ryan. I think Ryan's wordslip was unfortunate, but it was a heat of the moment kind of thing you would get from a game full of complete dickmoves.

Something not quite right about seeing GB videos were the GB guys are giving each other shit. I'd like to think of them as one big happy family in a sitcom house somewhere in San Francisco.

No more Lantern Runs, please. Bad vibes abound.

Anyone that thinks it's "Just a word" and there's no offence attached to, Ryan's heartfelt apology tells you otherwise, as does the response from people to whom the apology was aimed.

Your opinion is utterly superfluous in the face of both of those things. You're entitled to it, but you should keep it away from both parties that were affected.

That said, this was incredible - I just really hope everyone has made up with Brad.

I'm glad this was one of the first comments, because it's almost the exact thing I was going to post. It's cool that it seems like they were able to keep the game audio.

Damn. I was hoping, when Will was forced to use the lightning against the groups of enemies, that someone would figure out how good it is. No such luck.

The lightning rod is the secret best weapon in this mode; and they've commented on how amazingly useful it is against enemies it is every single time they've actually bothered to use it. Playing the Lantern Run by myself, the lightning got me to the ninth area and beyond, even almost getting me the million points (still working on it).

I honestly can't figure out why Brad was so adamant about everything that wasn't the shield being so fucking useless in this session. In the first Running of the Lanterns, he professed that the beam weapon was the best one to use. Then it turned into saws and shields, with maybe the beam if they remembered. Now if it isn't the shield, it's somehow entirely useless in every conceivable way.

Yes, the shield pushes the rocks around and lets you push the lantern at your maximum flying speed. It doesn't mean everyone should try and get it. I just wish someone playing would have challenged Brad. It's not like he was the best person to turn to for advice on what to do; he had to confirm with everyone else about basic game mechanics on this and genuinely didn't realise that you dropped the power-up you were carrying if you picked up a different one.

On top of that, half of the time he would just yell at everyone for not getting power-ups that he was sitting right next to and could easily have picked up himself, only wanting to take the armour upgrades, even if he had just respawned and a player who was about to die was right next to him.

But then, I don't know why I'm criticising them for playing it badly or not paying attention or not trying any sort of actual strategy — assigning roles and knowing what a power-up can do is not strategy — when they make it clear that they just want to entertain everyone and honestly don't give a damn about getting the achievement. That might be the point of this video feature, but they're playing for the audience, not for the achievement.

If they honestly cared about getting the achievement, they would have practiced outside of the streams, even if only to not let their skills get rusty, as they have every single time. They would have done the streams more regularly than once in a blue moon. By saying that it's bullshit, not in the spirit of the feature, they are actively admitting that it's not about the achievement.

And I'm okay with them just wanting to entertain people by means of a fun videogame, certainly. It just gets frustrating to watch them constantly try to focus and be serious about getting through the run to get either of the achievements, then instantly slip back into barely paying attention and making dumb jokes and showing no attempt to learn from their mistakes.

Immediately after buying the game on Steam, I went into the Lantern Run; and after ten attempts I made it to the ninth room and then some. It's not that hard; they just seem to not want to do simple things that are entirely beneficial to their run, like learn the layouts of rooms. Brad even payed attention to the cycle order of the power-ups to know that the shield came after the lightning rod; they have the capacity to retain the knowledge that if you don't shoot certain enemies, they don't try to chase you, or that since the shield can't kill every enemy, they should maybe get different power-ups that can.

But then, I haven't played it with three other people, much less in the same room; and I haven't been playing it live on the Internet for thousands of others to see, nor have I had what seems to be a far too dark screen that obscures the action at the bottom of the screen (where a lot of the safe paths are) to play on; and what might even be a slight delay from input to action on screen that seems to make a lot of the simple timing really tricky for them.

I'm sure even the knowledge that so many people could be watching you can make a person make stupid mistakes. And obviously, since they did this as a video feature, they clearly do want to entertain everyone, else they'd just get the achievement on their own time.

I just maintain that they can entertain people just fine without going out of their way to be crazy and wild and outrageous, which, with things like anyone yelling the way they do, Patrick constantly raising his voice the second anything seems to be going the slightest bit pear-shaped and Will just being a drama queen about pretty much everything, seems to be their priority over actually playing the game.

And at this point I'm basically saying that Giant Bomb should stop being Giant Bomb (which they absolutely shouldn't). Making almost everything I wrote here utterly pointless, outside of my advice about the lightning rod at the beginning. Well, that was a fantastic use of fifteen minutes. Never mind.

Thanks for giving this another go, guys. Maybe without the pressure of…anything that the likely small room you play it in forces upon you, one of you will be able to complete it in private. As great as it would be to see any of these achievement quest features succeed — though Doom II might actually happen, thanks in no small part to the quicksave — I am equally, if not more okay with one of you excitedly tweeting about having completed it over the weekend or bringing a great story to the Bombcast.

Hearing about the Gears of War 3 night, for me, was more fun than it probably would have been to see it, to use an existing example.

The ending was pretty sour. I completely understood why all three of them just picked up and left because of that.

I was literally shaking my head through that whole bit... pretty childish.

Real douche move by Brad at the end, geez. Hilarious, but totally douchey. Talk about taking your ball home.

Also, LIGHTNING. WHY AREN"T YOU GUYS USING IT. The second I saw Will use it, I knew it was the key to their success. And then they never used it again. *shakes head*

The outtake at the end is great. The bit before with Brad pissing everyone off by skipping the score, not so great.

Wow, that was a real ride! I always love the Lantern Run - shame this is likely to be the last, but I guess there will be something along to fill the gap soon enough. Don't beat on Ryan for what was a genuine slip. His response was born of frustration, not malice, and the apology came quickly and sincerely. Anyway, these videos are great because they show the team with their blood up. It's foolhardy to not expect lines to get crossed. Brad's 'flip out' at the end was just the cherry on top of a very entertaining (read lively) show.

I'm glad they brought Will in and didn't try to replace him with somebody else. That was easily the best Lantern Run yet (ever?). Well at least as far as being a spectator goes.

meh

someone says something dumb in the heat of the moment, apologizes. case closed.

hope it doesn't make Ryan second guess himself in future live streams.

I know I have made similar mistakes in the past, just not live on t'internet.

Was a great live stream and in the heat of the moment Ryan said something he shouldn't have... he apologized quickly and moved on. He did it right and did a good job after it happened.

Again ... Great live stream like always. :)

Somewhere in my stupidly long post earlier, I said as much. Lightning is the secret best weapon for this mode there is. And it's practically the only useful one if you're playing on your own. I was hoping every single time Ryan accidentally picked it up that someone would stumble upon how perfect it is, but they just don't want to try anything that's not a shield, for no logical reason.

Also, Drew coming in to say he's turning off the stream was pure gold.

Well for once I don't think Brad was the worst at the game, that title goes to Patrick, for being the worst at Lantern Runs.

The "controversy" aside I think they all realize they aren't going to complete the Lantern Run, and have one foot firmly on the lay blame when it goes wrong pedal. Even if they started using the right weapons I doubt they'd fare much better with them running right into things that seem to clearly be right in front of them. Also I'm happy to see them show their frustration, it's better than when they are incredulous about it.

Good thing they are stopping this. The first couple were kind of amusing, but this one was really unnecessary. There are a million other new things they could be doing instead for video content.

It was satisfying to have Ryan answer the constant "how did that happen?!" so frankly. By this point, them being surprised that something went wrong and wondering how it happened is just wilfully ignoring the game that they're playing.

I skipped to the end just to see what the fuss is about, and you people are making a fucking mountain out of a mole hill. There was barely anything to that. Train wreck? Oh please, behave. They've done much more awkward stuff in the past.

Ryan made a mistake. I've been following him and everyone here for about 10 years. I am willing to accept that he made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. I only hope that everyone here is able to forgive him. Yes, what he said offended some people. He apologized. He showed that he said something wrong and he is deeply sorry for it.

I know some people feel it's an overreaction, but obviously Ryan feels wrought with guilt about it. So much so that he has apologized publicly to anyone he may have offended. So please give him the benefit of the doubt and show that you still love him. He was a big man for taking this so seriously. He could have just ignored it, but he faced it head-on like a real man. I that that deserves something.

I feel sorry for Ryan, he clearly didn't mean to say this, we have all been in situations like this before. Even though I am homosexual I still wouldn't have been offended by it if I heard the original recording because I know Ryan and I know he would not mean it in that context. It is good that Ryan came out an apologised though which shows how good of a person he really is.

The video was good too :P
