Its a niche title, in a niche genre, so im surprised it will even sell enough to go over the breakeven point.

Believe me, a game like this does not require a huge investment to localize and publish. Nearly all of the work is already done, it's basically only some light text translation, QA, and balancing. You don't even need a huge marketing push because everyone that would care about it already knows about it. It isn't as iconic as Street Fighter, but KOF is still a pretty major player in the fighting genre. Newer sprite-based franchises like BlazBlue or Guilty Gear may be more innovative in certain ways, but KOF has a much larger fanbase worldwide.

QA and translation still cost money, and why would you balance it if it already has been released? I think youre exgerrating the size of the fanbase a lot and any iteration of KoF hasnt been relevant in the scene for YEARS.

Yes, translation and QA cost money, but not nearly as much money for a game that has to be built from the ground up, and certainly not for just another KOF game. With translation, it's just victory dialogue, menus, and a few cutscenes. Literally, I could finish that in a day. In QA you don't have to worry about exhaustively playing through a game and possibly missing things - most of the problems are in netcode because that's new. And the current version of the game is actually unbalanced in some ways that need correcting.

I could be wrong about the fanbase thing, I'm only involved in the scene in a very cursory way. Maybe it's because I've only talked to KoF fans.

(I sent you a PM. It should clear some things up.)

EDIT: so no one gets fired

Since you only really talked to KoF fans, you might have gotten a way more distorted view about the fanbase of KoF13. Being really involved in the fighting game scene, the KoF scene is almost dead, and the Blazblue scene is waaaay bigger than the KoF scene. Its a dead scene along with the GG series.

This is it! Forget the previous KOF12 game, that was hardly an important entry to the series, but more of a "Dream match", like Neowave.

Can't wait for this one!!

@Dark_Lord_Spam: There are two versions of the game. Arcade and Console.

For anyone interested in this game check out the iPlaywinners.com site for stream archives of their summer ranbat series. It's been so much fun watching those over the summer. This game looks really, really good IMO.

First KoF game I had played was 12. I didn't care for it so much. Maybe this one will be better?

I can't even rent games anymore so this'll probably be a late buy... if ever.

King Of Fighters, as a fighting game is leaps and bounds ahead of BlazBlue. People got burned on King Of Fighters XII, but many people active in the fighting game scene are working their asses off to show people why they should care about XIII, and it's even inspired Atlus to step their shit up and work more on getting the game in front of the public and the people who matter.

I cannot wait to get destroyed by Mexican kids who only grew up with NeoGeo.

Seriously, the KOF scene in the southwest is fierce as it can possibly get.

If you are new to KOF and don't understand why its fans are so obsessive over it, check out the KOF beginners guide by DandyJ. It goes over how movement, basic strikes, and counters lead to the most ridiculously deep 2D fighter made. You don't have to know all this to have a blast with the arcade mode, but if you take KOF online either through XIII or GGPO, you'll be thankful you are familiar with these crazy mechanics.

KoF 12 was just disappointing. What it was lacking is simple: value. They honestly expected people to pay $60 for a bare bones set of game features on par with the SNK Playmore downloadable classics. I have higher hopes for this but I'll be bummed if they don't include Yamazaki or Geese in the roster. Please be sure to do a quick look for this game complete with your honest opinions on one of the longest running fighting game series of all time.

Most likely they will because they'll actually put some more content in (character stories, more characters/stages, more moves, refined mechanics, etc.

BTW, I think 12 was a bad first choice to some extent. Maybe you should have started with '98 Ultimate Match....maybe.

@Nettacki: I don't doubt KoF 12 was a bad start. It soured me on the series for awhile. After a bit I ended up buying KoF 98 and 2002 on XBLA and felt those were pretty good. Not my favourite fighting series but it was fun enough.

Oh fighting games I don't want to play you at all but I am still fascinated by your craziness.
