For better or worse (mostly worse) Playtonic stuck to their original Kickstarter pitch and made a Banjo-Kazooie-inspired platformer with roots back to the days of the Nintendo 64. It’s actually quite shocking how similar Yooka-Laylee is to Banjo-Kazooie. Many of the game’s mechanics like holding down the jump button to glide or using the duck and jump buttons together to do a high jump are kept intact, but a lot of Banjo-Kazooie’s shortcomings are alive and well here too. For fans of 3D platfomers I think Yooka-Laylee does a excellent job of creating charming levels to explore 0
From what I remember about the launch of this game it seemed like everyone was quite critical of how this game was designed. With a bit to much of a focus on collecting way to many things. Yet my first reaction once I got into the first world was that they did a great job at recreating the atmosphere of the N64 era of platformers. Even the collectible aspect doesn’t seem that bad other than having acquire 100 pages to fight the final boss. Which isn’t a problem since each world has ...
