I've heard that they kind of spoil things that occur later in the game. Does the foreshadowing add to the tension, or does it ruin the surprise?

They spoil them in the sense that when it happens you'll be like "OHHH, so that's what that referred to." but they're short enough that they don't give away too  much. Also, some of them give some insights into the characters in the story that will help you appreciate them a bit more. So yes, read them.

The pages are a bit of a difficult thing. At first I wasnt reading them because they spoil things but the game said to read them because they explain some characters so I went back to them. Some do spoil small moments in the game. But its usually only a conclusion or a setup, nothing that tells you the "why" so the scene is still good and adds an "Thats it!" moment to it as well so you finally fuly understand.

There are some that seem a bit spoilerish but ultimately they so far just seem to be another element of the story telling in the game (such as finding radios or watching TV, etc) and ultimately while do spoil a little bit its generally not been enough to ruin a scene (however there are a couple that blatantly prepare you for something so caution is still advised if you dont want to know stuff ahead of time).

Read them.  The provide some great background and moodiness, and are only mildly spoilerish.

Also, it's not exactly spoilers as the foreshadowing plays a lot into the story.

yes read them. It's basically the old debate of spoilers in trailers... it's not a spoiler until you actually see it and go "oooooooooooh".

It is a huge! spoiler aleart that could happen Minitues after finding the pages, but some pages actully tell you things that were happening that you couldn't see. It tells you things happening in the background when Alan Wake wasn't there. So at one point some pages do tell you things that will kill the surprise, but at the same time it brings you into the story more.
