Is it going to be a 3rd person shooter with rpg elements ala Mass Effet? I just know it would be some type of rpg.

Would be a damn shame if CD Projekt pulls a Bioware and morphs from being an awesome RPG studio into a pew pew studio.

I'm really curious about the gameplay myself. Although, I would love a game to compete with Deus Ex, I'm hoping this is that game.

The game is literally over 2 years off. I'm not sure they even know what it's going to be.

It's going to be an RPG, guys. They've said it numerous times. Plus, it's based on a Pen & Paper RPG of the same(ish) title and the creator of the original is a co-creator on the game. Duh.

I'm pretty sure they said it was going to be a first person MOBA.

Also why are their no first person MOBA's?

Also why hasn't anyone remade battlezone yet?

They want to make it an RPG-ass RPG. Open world, side quests, character creation, etc. Their goal is to adopt as much of the original systems and skills as possible(They recently stated that some skills will get cut since they won't work in a video game). The combat will probably be real-time. No details yet. It's too early and they've never done it before, so they're being cautious talking about it.

I can see it being some type of third person shooter with melee elements. Looks kinda like Deus Ex. Is anyone here familiar with the pen and paper rpg?

I bet it is. Open world third person shooter with Deus Ex like abilities is the best guess.

Either way from that Trailer I got a Dead Island vibe. That is not a good vibe to get, like at all. But it is by CD Projekt so I really do not have many doubts. Either way I am sure it will be hardcore RPG it is based off of a Pen And Paper RPG so if they fuck it up some how I will be surprised.

It's the future, man. It's going to be beamed directly into our brains, man. So it will be like we are the characters, man but we can be anyone we want. Whoa.

Oh and it will be a 3rd person RPG, of course.

I'd bet it'll be a 3PS RPG, hopefully with more of a focus on the RPG elements (like original Deus Ex, Fallout 3 or ME1).

@Ares42: Only if they actually figure out a way to balance the shooting and RPG elements properly. ME1's shooting kind of sucks and F3's is only bearable because of V.A.T.S. I'm way more into RPGs than shooters, but if you're going to make your main gameplay interaction be a shooter you better make it feel like a decent shooter.

@Zeik: I disagree that ME1 shooting sucks, it's just not a straight up shooter. And yes Fallout3 works because of VATS, but it works. Either of the systems actually works great if you ask me, one of them goes fully RPG and makes it all about stats and rolls, and the other (which also includes Deus Ex) makes it so the shooting works based on how you spec your character. If you spec your character for small firearms going crazy with dual pistols will be great, but if you decide to pick up a sniper and try to snipe it's gonna be completely awful.

I still remember how awesome it was the moment I realized that if I specced for sniper rifles in Deus Ex my scope would drift way less making me much more efficient with that weapon type.

Agreed. It being open world though I'm hoping the level design is as open and complex as the original vs how cramped and obvious HR was.

@Ares42: I don't necessarily mind Fallout's approach, it's just that the gunplay itself was a little weak. If they tightened that up more (which they did in NV, but they could go farther) then it would be fine.

I did not like ME1's approach though. I don't like having to pump a ton of points into Sniper Rifles to even make the weapon usable. The whole point of a Sniper Rifle is so you can accurately snipe from a distance, if it's swaying all over the damn place like your character has Parkinson's Disease then it's worthless. Although I'm sure there are ways they could make that kind of system work better without making using the guns feel awful. The idea of becoming more proficient in certain weapon types by pumping skill points into isn't a bad idea, they just have to find a way to do it that doesn't make the gameplay less fun.

@Zeik: It's always gonna be inherently less fun than your standard shooter where you can pick up any weapon and be great with it though. The reward lies in the fact that speccing into a weapon makes you decent with it, and at some point it's gonna go over the point of being proficient and you start gettting great abilities on top of being proficient.

Sure, you could make a game where you're always proficient with any weapon and speccing into a certain branch just gives you special abilities with that weapon type (sorta like ME2), but by doing that you're losing something in the process in my opinion. The fact that everything sucked early in the game and that you become awesome at something later is just great, but I see how it can deter people that doesn't reach the point of conversion before they grow tired. I remember having that exact feeling with Fallout 3 several times, but when it first clicked it clicked hard.

I played all of ME1, multiple times even, so I certainly got to the "point of conversion", but I don't think that feeling of becoming "awesome" is worth the trade-off in making the first half of the game or so less fun to play. Especially considering it's not so much that you feel "awesome", it's more that you feel like you can actually use the weapons properly now.

This really could come down to how they structure the game though. Possibly the biggest problem with using that approach in ME1 was that they threw you into so many unavoidable gauntlets of enemies that forced you into so many bouts of mediocre gunplay it just exacerbated the problem. Perhaps if Cyberpunk was designed in such a way that you can avoid lengthy gunfights until you actually progress enough that you can use a weapon proficiently it might work better. I don't mind not being able to use every weapon equally well, but I don't like not being able to use any weapon well even more.

    No.

Based on the setting, the prime means of combat will obviously be guns, so it stands to reason there will be some shooter elements. With their track record of real time action oriented combat and the setting of the game, I think it is very possible the combat mechanics of this game will be something closely resembling a third person shooter. Of course, there is no rule stating the RPG elements need to be toned down simply because it has shooter-esque combat.

The trailer shows one of the characters had knife arms. No reason to assume it will be a shooter. Plus it's based on a pen and paper RPG so making it a shooter makes little sense - although I don't know enough about the RPG its based on to say how much guns are used.

Plus I doubt CDPR could make a good shooter. Or that they want to.

CD-Projekt are the anti-Bioware. They want their games to be challenging, stick to classic RPG conventions and the morality shouldn't be completely black and white. It's not going to be anything like Mass Effect.

I wouldn't necessarily mind it taking its cues from Mass Effect so long as they 1) don't go BioWare's route and gut the RPG elements (which they seem to be promising not to do), and 2) don't force cover-shooting mechanics on every character class.

In short, I don't mind third-person, and don't mind shooting, but it can't just be another third-person shooter with RPG elements. But for those saying that it's not going to be anything like Mass Effect ... I wouldn't be so sure. But even if it is, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

It would make no sense from a fictional standpoint for something set in 2077 to have all the characters running around with swords and knifes. I think it's a safe bet that there will be some sort of melee combat in the game, but to suggest there won't be any use of guns is absurd. To say CDPR wouldn't want or know how to make a shooter is kind of silly, I wasn't suggesting this will be a Gears of War clone, but they have always shown a great respect for source material, so I feel confident they will find a way to implement the use of firearms in such a way that plays well while staying true to the roots of the pen and paper RPG. Whether that means gameplay that plays similar to what one would call a third person shooter or something else entirely, who can say, but it doesn't make a whole lot a sense to dismiss the possibility outright.

My guess is something along the lines of an RPG with some gunplay, but it is a long way off, so who knows?

Maybe it will be a super-deep future-police management sim with first person shooter combat?

I'm hoping they go full on into the cyberpsychosis side of Cyberpunk, where your visual augs start giving you hallucinations, and having a bulletproof particle shield makes you feel literally god-like... but that would involve messing with the player's perspective, which, as much as I liked the bit that I played of the Witcher, it doesn't seem to be CDPR's strong suit. The only game that's pulled off that level of player-manipulation was Bioshock, IMHO, and that only worked as long as you could avoid spoilers.

So, giving them the benefit of the doubt, along with my hopes, I don't want to know anything about this game at all... but I do want to play it.

Would be a damn shame if CD Projekt pulls a Bioware and morphs from being an awesome RPG studio into a pew pew studio.

Sorry? I feel like I might be a bit confused by that statement.
