He started out on the Commodore 64, Amiga and Atari ST home computers as a programmer and porting arcade games. One of his biggest programming achievements was hacking the Atari ST's volume control, making it play 4-bit samples, which had previously been thought impossible. This technique was then showcased in his soundtrack for StarGlider which featured vocals.
He was often credited under his nickname Uncle Art, a name he later used when founding his own music studio. Today he works at the studio with his daughter, Holly Jazz Lowe. His primary video game music output was in the 80's and 90's, and he has mostly worked on film and TV scoring since, but in 2015 he expressed his wish to return to the video game medium, starting with a project to remaster much of his older works.
