Overview
Beginning as a 2001 manga series by Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist was published by Enix (later Square Enix) in Japan, running until 2010. The series follows two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, in their search of the philosopher's stone, hoping to undo an incident from their past which took away Edward's arm and leg, and Alphonse's entire body. The manga quickly took off, receiving a series of light novel adaptations and an anime adaptation within two years of its initial publication.
Due to being made while the manga was still running, the original anime series diverges heavily from the manga's eventual ending, with guidance from Arakawa. These differences led a second anime adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, to be created in 2009, following the manga's plot more closely.
The series' involvement with video games began in late 2003, with Fullmetal Alchemist and the Broken Angel. From 2003 through the conclusion of Brotherhood, the Fullmetal Alchemist series received a number of video game entries, although very few of the series' entries saw release outside of Japan. Additionally, the franchise has seen crossovers with a number of popular video games over the years, including Fullmetal Alchemist-themed cosmetics for Maplestory and character appearances in Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius.
