I remember picking up Demon's Souls for my PS3 without knowing what I was getting myself into at all. Died over and over and over... and over. Got to the point where I had really no health meter, and quit. Never picked it back up.
Picked up Dark Souls 2, pretty much the same experience. While I absolutely love the atmosphere and the eeriness of the games/series, I just couldn't get past my repeated failures. Honestly, I don't think I'd have been quite as frustrated if it wasn't for the dwindling maximum HP/humanity loss. Like I said, I'd get to points where I'd just be able to take nothing more than an ogre sneezing in my direction to die, with how little HP I had.
Watching other people play has really rekindled my interest in the Souls/Now-Bloodborne series, especially the Chronicles series at GI. While the games are very wide open and allows people to build characters as they see fit, there's definitely a deliberate pace and approach to how you handle them.
In the Souls games, the combat is very much leaning in the defensive spectrum of combat, blocking, dodging, reacting. I think I'm having a better, more approachable time with Bloodborne because the combat focuses on you being on the offensive, rather than the defensive. You still have the dodging and evading, but you aren't as penalized for being more proactive instead of reactive.
It also doesn't hurt that I'm not losing maximum health as I die over and over and over. So take it from someone who really didn't like the Souls games, Bloodborne is still worth a shot.
