2015 Game of the Year

Would like to play:

Stasis, Rebel Galaxy

Most Disappointing: Batman Arkham Knight

Even ignoring the disastrous PC version that forced me to wait 5 months only to play it on PS4 anyway, the game itself was still a disappointment. Batmobile was a neat idea that should have been completely optional or used once for 20 minutes. Instead it turns a large portion of the game into an exercise in tedium and frustration. And I guessed the twist several hours before its reveal.

The Honorary Michael Bay Award for best/most fiery explosions: Avalanche Studios for Mad Max/Just Cause 3

This one speaks for itself. Avalanche is the reigning king of "holy shit" explosions.

More like this please: Until Dawn

The story was kind of a miss for me, but the concept is still awesome. A narrative driven horror movie game with major player choice/consequence aspects should be a thing we see more of in the future.

List items

  • The best open world RPG ever made. Nobody does world building + story telling quite like CD Projekt Red.

  • Who knew just adding rocket powered cars could make soccer fun? This did for soccer games what Blitz and Jam did for football and basketball. Just pure and simple competitive joy.

  • Gorgeous platformer with leveling/upgrade mechanics and tight controls that didn't overstay it's welcome.

  • Mirror's Edge meets Dead Island with a Just Cause grappling hook thrown in for good measure? Yes, please!

  • Improves and expands on the excellent reboot from 2013 in almost every way. Also looks stunning on the Xbox One.

  • As far as stealth action gameplay goes, there has been no better than MGS5. An uneven and seemingly unfinished story plus some annoyingly bizarre decisions with the online component keep it from being higher.

  • The ability to play endless new levels created by people all over the world for some of the best platformers of all time make this much more than just your standard level editor.

  • Basically the spiritual sequel to Super Metroid with some unique twists and a great soundtrack.

  • Never would have thought a mobile only game would be one of the best games of the year, but Square Enix nailed it with this one. Great art and animation, good puzzles and even well done collectibles. It was a good year for Ms. Croft.

  • A surprisingly extensive single player story mode and living tower challenges that update every day kept my interest in MKX much longer than most fighters. Oh, and Cassie Cage's selfie fatality.
