Big Changes Supposedly Coming To Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 hasn't been announced yet, but Capcom's already promising "changes."

Masachika Kawata, a longrunning Capcom employee who has been involved with the Resident Evil series in various roles since Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, says that a sweeping “complete renovation” is on the horizon for the franchise the unannounced-but-you-know-it's-coming Resident Evil 6. We're talking about a possible brick-by-brick reconstruction of what a Resident Evil game is, according to Kawata.

"The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level," he said to Spanish site MarcaPlayer, as translated by videogame horror fansite Rely On Horror. "But we can't forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise."

Just don't ask him to run forward like that.
Just don't ask him to run forward like that.

== TEASER =="I can't say if we're going to make it survival horror or a shooter, but I can say that it'll be totally new,” he explained.

This is one of those classic “stay tuned” comments; what you see is exactly what you get in terms of specifics. If the next Resident Evil is going to give you the ability to dive into cover and regenerate health--or the chance to slide around like a lunatic with jet thrusters--is unknown at this point.

There are some anecdotal clues that can be gleaned, however, from the direction the other new Resident Evil titles are taking. It definitely seems possible Capcom will throw out the meat-turret concept in RE6. Both upcoming 3DS titles, for example, will allow you to move and shoot--a first for the series.

And let’s not forget that Kawata is now a producer on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which is a noted departure from the series norm. Operation Raccoon City is a squad-based shooter in development at Slant Six Games, pitting two four-person teams against each other to either cover up or stop the cover up of Resident Evil 2’s city-wide zombie outbreak. The hook is these teams won’t be responsible for murdering each other. Rather, there's an objective-based experience at work that’ll have both teams fending off monsters while accomplishing goal-oriented tasks. In other words, it’s not Resident Evil 5.

The cynical part of me things this is just Kawata spitting game about a new cover-based system, but hey, I’m open to hearing your ideas.

Sounds good to me, resident evil 5 was pretty average. I am hoping for more survival horror, but we know that isnt happening.

Maybe the ability to walk and shoot at the same time? That would be nice.

I hope it's more like 4 and 5 than the other ones. I always found those boring.

Great news. Whatever they decide to do with it, it needs to head more towards its horror roots.

Hopefully that doesn't mean reverting back to locked cameras, shitty controls, obtuse puzzles, and laughable scares.

They've been saying this for a while now. Maybe the reason for all this recent RE build up with games, and now the retreading of this statement that the series will be completely renovated, is to get people ready for the announcement.
Whether they do decide to head back to survival horror or just go all out shooter, please for the love of fuck just stick to one. I'd much rather prefer survival horror, but even still rather a shooter than some fucked up hybrid of the two like RE5 was; built upon the lesser aspects of both.

Also Brad, Mercenaries 3D isn't the first for the series to allow moving+shooting. Outbreak: File 2 implemented that feature in 2005.

RE5 has a cover system actually. It's not fully realized but it is there. It's most prominent in the later levels when you're on the ship.

It's interesting that the biggest question about every game in this series going forward is what genre the it  will be.

It better be survival horror.

I'm glad they are heading into a new direction, however, for me, Dead Space has filled the void that RE left behind. So perhaps what im saying is, make it more like DS, and less like whatever it is that they're thinking. They arent even sure if its going to be a survival game or a shooter ? Are you serious ? smh

I'm interested in seeing what they do. I loved Resident Evil 4 and 5 (put in over 50 hours on co-op. One of the best co-op experiences I have ever had!).

As long as development is internal instead of being overseas outsourced it is going to be okay I reckon. Resident Evil 5 was a great game, it had arcady  fun, amazing graphics, imaginative monster design and great boss battles. All in all it was a standout title among the horde of same looking, same feeling, same playing shooters from the west.

I hope and think they might just go full on Dead Space. Clunky shooter a la RE4/RE5 didn't work very well for me, even if I enjoyed them both a lot. Neither did RE1/2/3 in my book, absolutely horrible controls.

@wwfundertaker:  Yes. And while they would be doing that, they might as well make the lead character a Panzer.

Whatever they do, I just hope it can be properly played by yourself. I don't want to be tasked with babysitting an incompetent AI partner again. I did enjoy playing RE5 co-op, but the game is a truly frustrating experience in the absence of another human.

Good. I played RE5 for the first time a few weeks ago and couldn't believe that it had passed for an enjoyable, let alone playable, game. I think it's the first modern (read: not NES or Gameboy shovelware) game that I found to control so badly that it made me not want to play.

This seriously its the only reason I couldn't finish 5, the controls were just fucking beyond "old" The game was beautiful but Man was it stuck in the dark ages of design.

What if they were to take cues from Alan Wake and make something that adheres to modern conventions, without being purely an action game.

I don't get all the hate on RE5. Sure you can't move and shoot, but hey its a gameplay mechanic. It's not like they were just too lazy to put in the code to make the characters move and shoot. They decided that that is how it should play. I think if you could move and shoot it would have been more bland and people would have complained that it's too much like all the other TPS out there. And sure it's not as scary as the older REs or the Silent Hill series but I found it fun and entertaining to play, especially co-op.

I'm hoping RE6 is still over the shoulder, is still co-op, and if they decide to make it more horror or less horror, move and shoot or tank controls, hopefully it is still just as fun to play as I found 5 was.

It's because RE5 was clearly more of an action game. It wasn't less scary, it just wasn't scary to begin with. Although none of them were inherently all that scary to begin with, but I mean more towards the atmosphere it presented, which sometimes was pretty unsettling.
I had nothing against the whole feet-glued-to-the-floor, and the previous games worked fine with it. Anyone who says the games were broken and unplayable because of that just sucked at the old Resident Evil titles.

But then RE5 came along and it was clearly intended to be more of a generalised action third person shooter, complete with plenty of ammo, a considerable amount of automatic weapons and a laughably terrible cover system. There was no reason for them not to allow you to move+shoot within that game since it was supposed to be much more fast paced, and made pointless. The common complaint of watching enemies charge at you then stop once they reached you close enough was a clear indicator at how unfitting it was in RE5.

If the sweeping changes are to make it a squad-based multi-player focused shooter more akin to Lost Planet 2 then I'll lose all interest.  Operation Raccoon City is an interesting spin-off but, I don't want it to be a staple for the series.

All this talk of squad/cover-shooter genre-shifting makes me pray that if RE winds up trying to go the way of The 3rd Birthday, the storyline quality better not attempt a similar nosedive.

I'm tired with them still focusing on the same old story.  What I like about RE4 was I could forget about all the other games and play it like it was a new story a new start, then RE5 came in and glued all of that to the rest of the series.  They should move away from the story that has been told sooooo many times, and come up with a new story and just build from there.

This series will never feel fresh if they keep re-telling everything that has happened.  They should get a new story going.
