Big Changes Supposedly Coming To Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 hasn't been announced yet, but Capcom's already promising "changes."

Masachika Kawata, a longrunning Capcom employee who has been involved with the Resident Evil series in various roles since Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, says that a sweeping “complete renovation” is on the horizon for the franchise the unannounced-but-you-know-it's-coming Resident Evil 6. We're talking about a possible brick-by-brick reconstruction of what a Resident Evil game is, according to Kawata.

"The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level," he said to Spanish site MarcaPlayer, as translated by videogame horror fansite Rely On Horror. "But we can't forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise."

Just don't ask him to run forward like that.
Just don't ask him to run forward like that.

== TEASER =="I can't say if we're going to make it survival horror or a shooter, but I can say that it'll be totally new,” he explained.

This is one of those classic “stay tuned” comments; what you see is exactly what you get in terms of specifics. If the next Resident Evil is going to give you the ability to dive into cover and regenerate health--or the chance to slide around like a lunatic with jet thrusters--is unknown at this point.

There are some anecdotal clues that can be gleaned, however, from the direction the other new Resident Evil titles are taking. It definitely seems possible Capcom will throw out the meat-turret concept in RE6. Both upcoming 3DS titles, for example, will allow you to move and shoot--a first for the series.

And let’s not forget that Kawata is now a producer on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which is a noted departure from the series norm. Operation Raccoon City is a squad-based shooter in development at Slant Six Games, pitting two four-person teams against each other to either cover up or stop the cover up of Resident Evil 2’s city-wide zombie outbreak. The hook is these teams won’t be responsible for murdering each other. Rather, there's an objective-based experience at work that’ll have both teams fending off monsters while accomplishing goal-oriented tasks. In other words, it’s not Resident Evil 5.

The cynical part of me things this is just Kawata spitting game about a new cover-based system, but hey, I’m open to hearing your ideas.

Well, it could use a little freshness although RE5 was really good, and sorry to say but ALOT better then 2-3 0.0

How can I say such a thing? Well, I played the Alone in the Dark games, so RE wasn't really the OMG its survival horror game! The first one was well done, but by the second one, the tank controls were already tiresome.

I hope this RE leans more towards the direction taken by 4 and 5 than any of the earlier ones.

Fixing the shitty controls and the terrible item management would be a good start.

I found two potatoes in the Potato Sack Portal 2 promotion on Steam. There were something like 36-38 in total. They were hidden in the different Potato Sack games. Some were as easy as beating a bonus level, some were as hard as finding them in a secret room or some other crazy objectives. The people that found all of them ended up being gifted the Valve Complete Pack by Valve, though nobody knew that would happen until after the fact.

I hope they just make a survival horror game again.  The Silent Hill series doesn't seem to have any trouble with it.

I'm curious as to how in the hell they can change Resi again. They better not fuck it up.

Personally, I would love to see them return to the traditional survival horror gameplay with fixed camera angles. Those were the days.

i want a horror game again. i like 4 more than i did 5. 5 felt more like an action game that they made. 4 also had puzzles in them like the other ones before that. make it more like 4 and we will be good.

I don't know why everyone was so pissed off about standing still while you aim.  It's not like the game was designed in such a way where you had to be able to sidestep while aiming (a la Dead Space).  It's perfectly designed to create scenarios where you have to decide whether you should try to pop the dude another time, or be conservative and get distance early.  It just seems like another instance of people demanding all games play identical rather than learn the way games play.

Let me explain something to you. You see, you're not normal. You're a great guy, I love you, but... you're a pod. I, on the other hand, am a human being. I sometimes feel awkward, uncomfortable, even inhibited in certain situations with zombies. You wouldn't understand.

Good.

4 and 5 both sucked, well not so much as games themselves, they were perfectly playable but they just weren't proper Resident Evil experiences.

I hope we go back to real zombies, slow or fast. I think a new Resident Evil could pull off fast style zombies pretty well with better controls. (take a page out of Dead Space's book)

I've said this way too many times.
RE4:Amazing Game but Terrible RE Game
RE5:Good Game but Terrible RE Game

All they would have had to do was use a subtitle instead of a main number or just create a completely different set of characters and universe and I would have been fine. Instead it completely changes what to expect from an established franchise. RE4 and 5 might have brought with it an improvement in some parts, but it changes the mood and feel so much it shouldn't even be apart of the same series.

Seriously, what's the problem with breaking them out from the main story or having them be new IPs? It really served as a slap in the face to fans of the originals. Great games by all means, but not my RE.

I'm curious as to what's going to happen with RE6, even if it played the same as RE5 but the setting and atmosphere were more reminiscent of the originals that would be enough. I mean bring me back to the streets of Racoon City for a third time if you have to. Seeing that area in todays visuals would be INCREDIBLE. Hell, just remake RE2/3 with new controls and camera, that game was already way more action oriented than RE1.

I stand by this though, REmake is the best RE game ever. The atmosphere in that game is still incredible. Ahh what pre-rendered environments can do...

I've always found it amusing that RE: Outbreak had this feature years ago and yet somehow this was never implemented into any other entry into the series.

Capcom always do this, but now it's almost getting to be too late for me to care being an ex RE fanatic! I don't want a reboot but they have to go back to the horror, one location thing in my opinion. It makes the game less linear which was one of the selling points of the originals. I don't want an epic, I want a horror movie where I play as the lead protagonist in a tense claustrophobic environment. Thanks!

I'm confused by this as it sounds like you are judging the wrong games? RE2 is the true fan favourite of people who grew up with the series. If you played it at the time of release it would have blown you away! Think the average review was like 9.5-10 at the time? You've got to remember these were some of the first games which allowed you to be a playable character in a movie, that's why the series became some popular.

So I am a big fan of RE4. It's easily my favorite. If they can capture the magic of that game but improve upon the controls and add the ability to move/shoot at the same time I would be just fine with that. I really didn't even have problems with RE4's controls. I don't know how they managed to fuck it up so bad on RE5 maybe it is because the game was paced so much differently than RE4. I think the fact that they are releasing an HD version of RE4 says something.

Honestly after ten or so minutes with RE4-5, tank controls were just how the game played. There has to some level of acceptance in playing a game the way the devs want you to. Having said that a capcom shooter without tank controls close to RE 5 does make me excited.

Maybe insert some rpg elements, say at the start you have tank controls then once you level up you can walk and shoot, then run and shoot as ou get better. I like RE4-5 as games but I really couldn't give a shit about the Res evil franchise, or tradition survival horror as a whole. But thats just me.

@FuzzYLemoN:  Actually, judging by the way RE4 and 5 sold in comparison to the traditional slow paced box puzzles and key-finding type gmaes that 0-3 were, the vast majority of people want RE6 to be a shooter.

And they're right. Because "survival horror" games are unscary, boring garbage.

Seriously, anyone who says walking and shooting simultaneously is something the franchise needs doesn't know how to play Resident Evil games. Or at least the last 2. I've heard MILLIONS of complaints about how when ever someone needs to run away it would take forever for them to turn around. If they paid attention to the tutorial or even read the instructions they would know that on classic RE4 controls pressing down+X (down+A for Xbox) will make you do a complete turn around in less than half a second.

Every time I hear a serious game journalist complain about that one issue I get infuriated. Maybe if it was just one or 2 people that mention it but when it's all my favorite websites and news outlets complaining... There is only so many times I can comment on a story D:

Cover would be a weird direction to take it if you're still fighting zombies.

I'm hoping for a first person Barry Burton simulator.  It would mostly just be a Mad Libs style sentence generator.

They don't need changes. They just need the same level design and length from RE4, then I'll be happy. RE5 was just an ultra-linear shooter without any adventure elements like RE4.

Ugg, Resident Evil 4&5 just turned me off.  But, I think it has more to do with just growing tired of Japanese developed games with their layer of unrealstic telenovela-style melodrama.  If Capcom continue down the path they are on that’s fine for them, but I won’t be buying their games.
