Climbing Back Into Star Fox 64 3DS' Arwing

Who's ready for some more Nintendo 64 classics shrunk down to pocket size?

You know what? I think Star Fox 64 might actually hold up. Granted, I haven't played that game--or any Star Fox game--since the original came out a zillion years ago (in 1997), and consequently I went and looked at the new 3DS version of the game yesterday expecting nothing but a nostalgia piece, but it turns out the 3DS seems like a fine way to experience Star Fox's behind-the-arwing brand of quick third-person shooting all over again.

It helps that Star Fox 3D features fully redone graphics a la Ocarina of Time 3D, but in this case the overhaul comes courtesy of Q-Games, the well-known Japan-based developer behind the PixelJunk series. That mean's Q's head honcho Dylan Cuthbert is sort of coming full circle here, having worked on the original Super NES Star Fox games way back when. I doubt that has much effect on how this redone version actually turns out, but it makes for a nice sentimental story, right?

No Caption Provided

Story-wise, this is the same game you played on the Nintendo 64, but man does it look better. I played that first area on Corneria and the improvements were nice, but didn't bowl me over, but then I jumped to the Zoness level later in the game, which is covered in water. There I got to see the sort of shadowing and texture on the water that you wouldn't necessarily expect out of the 3DS. Nintendo has gone in and re-recorded all of the game's voiceover as well, though that may have been for simple quality reasons, since the voice work sounded pretty similar to what I remember of the original.

It sounds like a no-brainer, but it's great that Nintendo and Q have added the ability to save your progress between campaign missions. That's mainly because in the original, you had to start the game afresh every time you turned the power back on, and moreover, the game has a widely branching mission structure that makes you satisfy some pretty strict mid-mission requirements to see some of the more obscure levels. Nintendo rightly pointed out that even a lot of devoted players of the original game probably never saw all the levels (I didn't), so you ought to have a better shot at playing everything with the more lenient save feature.

No Caption Provided

The most substantive addition to Star Fox on the 3DS is the revamped four-player mode. You know what's especially weird about it? You can only play it through single-cart download play; there's no mode that works with four different copies of the game. That's a pretty dramatic shift from Nintendo's old policy of offering extremely limited multiplayer options through download play, and the full experience only if everyone who wants to play has the game. At the core the multiplayer consists of the same four-player dogfighting in the original, but there are new maps to play on, and you can set numerous rules ahead of the match about kills, time limit, and such. Most importantly, there are Mario Kart-style power-ups scattered around that yield random weapons like homing missiles and the "transposer," which swaps the position of your ship and whoever you hit with it. It's also a nice touch that the 3DS camera feeds a shot of each player into the multiplayer match, hovering over their ship. Makes for some added trash-talking.

Much like Ocarina of Time 3D, the appeal of this game for veterans of Star Fox 64 will probably come down their interest in replaying a better version of that same game, this time on a handheld. But if those veterans are like me, it's been so long that the game might feel all shiny and new again. The shooting part still satisfies, at any rate.

I love Starfox 64, why can't they make a new one like it.
Nintendo should just let Hideki Kamiya fufill his dream of making a Starfox game.

Still waiting on that Wii / Wii U sequel. Wiimote controls would be perfect for Starfox... Proof right here.

Yes yes!! I Will play this so hard.

That came out a bit strange....

This N64 is by nostalgic weak point and I'll eat whatever N64 crap they throw at me.

Weirdly disappointed though that you can save between mission and not just go the path you went that time, I'd like the feeling of being rewarded with a whole other level for good play.

Just to be clear.

Not that that I'm saying that I am against saving in between missions, just that you can try right afterwards to get the requirements for the "higher" levels.

I literally just played the N64 version a couple weeks ago because my brother dug it out, along with Perfect Dark and Ocarina of Time. Amazing game and one of my favourites of all time but I don't need a newer version.

Ocarina 3D was a big waste of time and money. It easily doesn't hold up as well as Majora's, Wind Waker or even handheld-friendly Zelda games like Spirit Tracks and the Oracle games. It honestly turned me off to the whole 3DS "vaguely Dreamcast-looking now" N64 ports.

I loved SF64 back in the day, but f*** this sh*t. Get cracking on new games Nintendo, or consider this 3DS owner a Vita user in the fall.

As a "veteran" of these video games, I could easily play it or any of the other games they are porting by simply digging through my closet. If I felt like spending money, I'd go buy something I haven't actually played before.

I've had this preordered for a while. Star Fox 64 is a great fit for a portable system. It's unfortunate that the 3DS doesn't have somewhere to plug in a rumble pack.

I still want a Wave Race 64 port though.

Day 1 purchase for me, had my pre-order in since it was announced, im amazed that with the high quality of 3DS titles to date people still feel a need to moan and complain. Everyone complained because Ocarina didnt come out at launch, it finally comes out and everyone moans because they want a new Zelda game. Lets not forget that a large number of the upcoming Vita games are going to be clones of PS3 games using something similar to transfarring, or did you not watch the E3 press thing? <just for the record i have a pre-order in for the Vita too...>

I played the hell out of this game, but never acutally had my own copy. Like Goldeneye, all of my friends had it, so why would I?

I think I'll pick it up this time... Maybe because none of my friends have dedicated handheld gaming devices in 2011...

I'm getting this too. Just because it's old and a remake doesn't make it a bad game, and I would rather play it with crisper visuals (mostly due to a smaller screen and reworked textures) than on a blurry as fuck N64.

Also, that lava and water looked pretty rad.

Yes it can, though it might be a bit of a tight fit depending on the pocket; Kahki pants or cargo pants pockets? Fits fine. Regular jean pockets? Maybe. Skinny jean pockets? NEVER.

This actually looks alright, but just like OoT, I beat the original 64 cart multiple times, repurchased them years later on Virtual Console, and even messed around with them in HD on Project 64. If these remakes were $19.99, I might pick them up, but $40 is too much. I would gladly pay $40 to a new game in either series, though...and what is the deal with no online MP? I don't know ONE person in real life that owns a 3Ds, let alone three.  And I'm a nerd...

I went back to Star Fox 64 fairly recently, and the game DOES hold up remarkably well. Though that's coming from someone who went so far as to unlock the on-foot characters in multiplayer, so take it for what it's worth.

If they redid the graphics and voices why not just go all the way and design some levels and make it a new game, the 3DS could use some more new games.

This is funny because it will happen!

As for the game itself, well seeing it again has reminded me how dated dated this games game play and structure are now. And I can not see the Arwings controlling well with the 3DS's slide pad either.

What I find amusing in all of this is basically how Brad has to review all these games since I don't actually think the other three would be nearly as forgiving.
