COD: Black Ops Dedicated Servers Available For Rental Only

Want to run your own server for the next Call of Duty? Get ready to pony up a little cash.

Recent news that the PC version of Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops would have dedicated servers went over well with the crowd that rushed to sign petitions and otherwise expressed digital outrage over the fact that the last Call of Duty game, Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2, didn't ship with that kind of support. But, it's hard to believe that same mob will find the details of a new partnership with GamerServers.com to exclusively provide the service that much more agreeable.

According to IGNActivision and Treyarch have inked an agreement with GameServers.com, making it the exclusive provider of dedicated servers for Black Ops. In the end, this means users who want to create their own servers will both have to use GameServers and pony up some dough to the company. But it bears noting that Treyarch will be providing a stable of free servers for players to use as they please, as well.

== TEASER ==Prospective server owners can expect ranked severs, which can support up to 18 people, to cost a cool $14.95 a month. Unranked servers that are able to support up to 24 players will cost .99 cents per player per month. Discounts on the former are available via the GamerServers.com pre-order page if users want to prepay for the support in three, six, or 12-month increments.

User-rented servers will give their owner the ability to kick, ban, and configure at will, according to Treyarch community manager Josh Olin. Ranked servers, however, will have fewer options as these matches have criteria that can't be fiddled with by users.

"Nobody will have to rent a dedicated server through GameServers in order to play the game," Olin told IGN. "But for anybody who wants to run their own server, it will be run from GameServers.com."

Treyarch's free servers will go live on the game's launch date, November 9. There's been no word on how long those servers will stay active.

That's not half bad, provided that the servers are of high quality. 14.95 for 18 player server easily compares to CS and CSS prices.

Yeah it kinda sucks you can't make your own server for your lan, but just like the whole SC2 thing, how often do you lan without internet access?

Exactly.  People will take a chance to bitch at Activision any time they get, but this is the same thing that BBC2 did.  They should be happy that they get dedicated servers in the first place.

As a PC gamer... this is honestly non-news. It's the same sort of setup that that dedicated server owners and renters have been doing for years.

Yeah. And both things - that people actually praised BBC2 for this shit and now blast Black Ops for the same and that people should be happy that they get access to a standard feature for cash - are quite sad.

Gameservers host good servers. But if they have the supply/demand problems they had with BC2 I am going to be pissed. Took me more than a month to get a server.

@Crushed:

The difference here is that this is an exclusive deal with a single service provider.  While most committed server owners weren't running their servers on their own PC and did rent from server providers, they had the option of choosing the provider.  With a monopoly on it, the quality of service could be absolute shit and there's nowhere else people can get servers from.

I don't think this will matter considering that most people who care about dedicated servers are probably going to rent them anyway.

Yeah I think it's the lack of getting to choose who the provider is might be a problem for those that care.   If they can meet the demand (which would seem stupid if Treyarch or Activision didn't check on this first)  then it should be ok.

Most good clans etc. rent a server from some company anyway (I have done so myself) and the prices for these servers are no more expensive than most places you can get them from. The most rumbles i've heard has been because of the player limit but i never usually play in servers with more than 24 players either. I just hope that the servers are good quality so theres little lag.

This is really a non-issue. How many people do you think run their own dedicated servers? Almost everyone rents them.

I'm glad to see people responding here that actually have a bit of sense.^^^^

The handful of negative comments on this article so far have come from idiots assuming PC gamers will be up in arms about this - because said idiots probably have no understanding of how dedicated hosting works. 99 times out of 100, a clan ALWAYS rents a server in this fashion. This is how dedicated servers have been hosted for years. Heck, I'm currently renting a dedicated server for an 8 year old game exactly like this. It is very rare to see a clan server hosted privately - most people don't have the bandwidth for it, nor want the hassle of maintaining the server on site.

The only possible issue I can see is the lack of choice, but as long as this company is reliable and able to deliver good pings, then there's absolutely no problem with this at all. Prices seem very reasonable to me too.

Unfortunately the voices of reason from the PC camp are bound to be ignored here, as I expect a slew of idiotic, shit-stirring comments from the vocal minority of the console camp to be added shortly.

I can't believe they took the "no dedicated servers" thing and then somehow made it worse.

You know how you run a server for a video game where I'm from? You install and run a goddamn executable on your computer. I should not have to pay fifteen dollars a month for an executable.

Christ almighty this is some serious shit right here.
