Destiny Adding Microtransactions On October 13

A new currency called "Silver" will be purchasable with real money and will be used to purchase emotes.

Dancing is really right at the core of the Destiny experience.
Dancing is really right at the core of the Destiny experience.

It's always felt like something of an inevitability to me that Bungie would add microtransactions to Destiny. Well, Bungie has announced that they're finally arriving. Starting on October 13, Destiny players will be able to buy "Silver" via PSN and Xbox Live and then use it at Destiny's new Eververse Trading Company, where they'll be able to buy new emotes. Players will be given a small free batch of silver so that they can try the system out and pick up "an emote or two" for free.

There really isn't much more information than that at the moment. Bungie hasn't indicated how much Silver will cost, nor how expensive the 18 new emotes will be. While the studio does note that these emotes "won't impact the action game in any way," it isn't clear whether the Eververse Trading Company's catalog will stick to aesthetic goods or if it will ever expand to include things like armor, weapons, or gameplay boosts.

In the announcement, Bungie emphasizes that this program will serve to expand on the "surprising" new content that the Destiny fanbase has enjoyed in The Taken King. The studio specifically notes the plan is to use these microtransactions to pay for "more robust and engaging" updates from Destiny's live team, including an increased focus on world events.

Pictured: Two Destiny fans with differing opinions on the inclusion of microtransactions.
Pictured: Two Destiny fans with differing opinions on the inclusion of microtransactions.

For better or worse, microtransactions have become part and parcel to the modern MMO experience, and I'm pretty ambivalent about them. When done well, microtransactions can provide value to interested players (and a new income stream to the studio) without ever dragging down those players who'd prefer not to pay.

Of course, what a "good" microtransaction system looks like depends on the game in question. What seems pretty scummy in a full-priced game is much more reasonable in something that is free-to-play. In a highly competitive game, "boosts" and similar microtransactions can severely unbalance the game in a way that makes it unplayable for players who can't (or won't) pay, but I'm cautious about totally dismissing the argument for "convenience" micotransactions (especially as my own free time becomes increasingly limited). There really are a ton of variables in play.

Bungie seems to be hedging their bets with this announcement, and I'm not quite sure how to take that. This opening salvo of emotes seems unobjectionable, but the studio also hasn't made any promises about future microtransaction content. Given how Destiny has recently gotten its claws into me, I'm interested to see how they execute on this strategy... And if I'm being honest, I'm pretty curious to see these new dances, too.

Makes sense, that charged extra money to make the game passable, so of course they release micro-transactions. This is still prob the least disgusting thing in Destiny though. Hope it stays cosmetic!

This isn't the place for it but the whole "cosmetics don't affect the game" attitude is a bold-faced lie marketers have somehow gotten away with for too long. Grrrr! Hear me seek justice!

Yes, it does change your experience with the game.

Sure, cosmetics do not change at all how much damage you do, but there is a metric fuck of a difference between paying 2 bucks to unlock a dance/sparrow/shader and unlocking a new one IN GAME. One of those is a fun experience (an exciting reward or loot drop perhaps?) that makes you want to keep playing the game and finding new stuff, and the other is not.

Anyways feel free to tell me I'm wrong and cosmetics and how you unlock them has 0 effect on your experience playing a game.

Yes, this is the lesser evil. I'm not blind to the other options, just dumb and worried. There is already a lack of loot in this game and problems with everyone having/going for the same gear. I don't see this DLC making that better, only worse. Except now when everyone tells the same story about this gun they got from a raid, they can all tell the same story about going to the PSN/XBO store to buy a shader.

That said. As maniacal as it sounds, I think the idea of using your whales to fund free content for everyone else instead of expensive "leave everyone behind" expansion packs is a smarter decision long term for the community.

I completely agree. Even if the DLC or microtransactions are just cosmetic, it still changes the game. I hate the attitude that everything's alright if it's only cosmetic.

Eh, I don't care that it's not gameplay-relevant, selling trinkets in a game that people have spent upwards of a hundred dollars on is still pretty gross. No matter who does it or how much it costs to make (and market) a game. But I'm sure they looked at the collector's edition and demand for emotes and decided they could just as easily sell more of them without ruining the core gameplay.

Though in a multiplayer game that for a lot of people is about finding and equipping cool new items to show off and interact with friends, selling aesthetic items does detract from the game. Finding or earning a cool shader or other purely aesthetic item is fun. A questline that allowed you to earn new emotes would be far better than buying them. Turning Destiny into a game where aesthetics are for sale just reinforces that the core gameplay loop is look for items with higher light.

Maybe it's just me, but this doesn't seem to be too outlandish given how Bungie has made other questionable financial decisions with this game.

I am really wondering what their plan for Destiny is for "Year 2." Are they going to release two twenty dollar expansions over the course of the year as they did in Year 1? Is there going to be a full 60 dollar new Destiny game next September for "Year 3?" Or is it going to be another Taken King style larger expansion along with a "3.0" update to change the game more.

But on a serious note the thing that bothers me about this is if the "premium microtransaction content" starts being the only interesting thing added to the game. Such as with WoW's mounts and pets in their shop.

This irks me way more than it should and I don't know why! Maybe it's because vanilla Destiny wasn't worth the $60 price tag and neither of the 2 expansions were worth their $20 price tags and only now does Destiny feel like a somewhat complete game and the first thing they talk about adding is free-to-play microtransactions for worthless emotes. I don't know maybe they'll be cool but I can't help but doubt every decision Bungie makes with this game.

This has to include things other than emotes eventually, right? Otherwise why make a new currency when you could just release the dances as DLC?

This is Bungie (and Destiny more specifically) we're talking about here: Making new, unnecessary currencies is their jam.

I agree with this completely. Al long as this stays cosmetic I don't really have a problem with it. I really hope they don't branch out into selling weapons and armor. Destiny is really good now and it doesn't need to turn into a pay to win game.

For what its worth, this is almost identical to the approach that Arena Net took with Guild Wars 2, down to the future focus on world events. That particular case played out fairly well, IMO, and it included non-cosmetic options as well (extra character slots, more bags). Curious to see how this develops, but it feels like a smart decision on their part.

60$ Xbox one

40$ PS4 (switched to ps4 because I knew more people playing it there)

I'll copy what I posted on the other thread before this became Austin approved news (AAN for the cool kids)

My biggest issues with this isn't the micro transactions for emotes, that stuff is fine, people who want them can buy them.

I'm worried about how they say they aren't going to do a "second big expansion" and instead make free story missions to give away. Now for most games and developers, I'd be fine with that, but for Destiny and it's history of dry content, even if TTK is much better, I fear our new story content every few months is going to non-substantial and really not have an impact on the story of the game, instead of what a new expansion would be.

I hope I am wrong, and it'll just be a wait and see, but from the angel of someone who wants more, forward driven narrative, this sets of some slightly yellow flags to me.

I am pretty sure they are just going to go full steam ahead on a Destiny 2 for this time next year.

On Topic: I think the microtransactions are fine. I think if they are going to do this, it's best to be on cosmetic stuff like this. As long as they keep it in seperate venders. I dont want to see paid items mixed in with Xur's stuff for example.

I am Really not surprised that micro transaction have made there way in to destiny, I'm sure we will be seeing Best Deal on money to silver rate soon. I also expect to see Bungie in future creating new content just to sell to the whales because why not milk the cow for all it's got.

Sad times for big budget games.

So, they release a 60 dollar, incomplete, mess of a game, some ho-hum expansions, and then finally release a "full" game a year later (again, charging 60)... and now micro-transactions?

bwahahhahahha. This just keeps getting better. No really, wait here. I'll go get my popcorn.

You know it's funny, my buddy and I had already decided to buy TTK leg bundle this weekend to play this (me returning from a long hiatus and he completely new) and with this I think I can safely say I have zero interest. I see this as them opening the door for the eventual "only 100 silver for dat 310 armor you want" anyone who believes this will stay for emotes is completely in denial and devoid of any foresight.

Also while they say there won't be another big expansion there will be 2 $20 DLCs and then this time next year there will be Destiny 2. They're not lying technically since you can't call Destiny 2 an expansion but you can bet your ass that they're planning 4 $20 DLCs and 1 $40 DLC for that on the off year before Destiny 3.

Honestly this makes more excited to play Destiny. Ubisoft and EA really bungled their foray into micro transactions despite plenty of successes and failures to learn from. I'm fairly certain Activision/Bungis will be a little more cautious given how this first round of transactions seem.

I have no doubt they'll move the goal posts at least a bit, but starting with emotes only makes it sound like they're wanting to test this rev stream rather than diving all-in haphazardly.

I'd already been thinking about buying Destiny when I finally go next gen on Black Friday. Totally in if they're going to move to free DLC funded by (hopefully) responsible micro transactions. If they can fatten this cash cow with just cosmetics, I don't believe they'll risk sacrificing the whole damn thing for p2w. There's just way too many examples of this working or failing with major titles at this point for them to bungle their 10-year plan.

The frustrating part of this (at least for me) is that a couple weeks ago Activision was gloating about how commercially successful the launch of TTK was. Now they're justifying micro transactions by basically saying, "Hey, we still need more money to make stuff."

I'm not necessarily opposed to theirimplementation but it's just the way this has been juxtaposed with the game's success rubs me the wrong way. Feels like a guy in a fancy suit panhandling.

No, this is Activision and Bungie doing this.

People need to stop giving the developer a free pass because it's convenient to blame the evil publisher. At the very least, those who think Activision is responsible for every bad move Destiny has made should admonish this righteous fantasy version of Bungie for lacking the backbone to stand up to this nonsense.

This isn't super surprising, DOTA seems to do good with just cosmetic stuff but that is a Free-To-Play game. I payed 60 dollars for Destiny when it first came out then played it for about a month but got tired of grinding for hours without anything to show for it. I've played my share of Destiny and I will not be spending any more money on that game.

I'd love to believe this will stay just for cosmetic junk, but I'm just cynical enough about where Bungie is at right now to think this could bleed over into gameplay-relevant stuff given enough time. Ah well, for the time being it's harmless and Destiny is currently a pretty decent game. Maybe "Year 3" will be when it becomes a trainwreck again or something, we'll see.
