Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen On Its Way to PCs

Capcom's divisive RPG will be re-released on Steam for $29.99 this January, and I am trying really hard not to use exclamation points right now.

Dragon's Dogma's rolling, hours long Griffin hunt was a stand out moment.
Dragon's Dogma's rolling, hours long Griffin hunt was a stand out moment.

A few years ago, on the recommendation of Patrick Kelepk, I took a chance on Capcom's Dragon's Dogma. It was a good choice, because as far as fantasy games from the previous console generation go, I think Dragon's Dogma is my favorite. While I've spent way more hours with the Elder Scrolls and Souls series, my time with Dragon's Dogma is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about exploring a fantastic and dangerous world. So I'm pretty happy to hear that the game is getting a second chance on the PC in just a few months.

The PC release will include all of the content that came in the game's Dark Arisen re-release, which includes a new large, end-game dungeon that requires real knowledge and mastery of the game's combat system. Dark Arisen also slightly modified some of the more obtuse game mechanics (like the very limited fast travel system), making it a little more accessible to players turned off by the game's more difficult idiosyncrasies.

It's hard not to wonder whether this release is meant to test the waters for a potential release of Dragon's Dogma Online, the free-to-play MMO follow-up to Dragon's Dogma that recently released in Japan. Early reports on Dragon's Dogma Online are mixed, and if I'm being really honest, what I'd love more than anything is for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen's PC release to feature multiplayer--an option that was long rumored to be included in Capcom's own internal, PC-based development build of the game.

In any case, I'm happy that I'll soon be able to revisit Dragon's Dogma without hauling my PS3 out of storage, and I'm curious to see what fans and modders will do with the game once it's available.

Are there any other Dragon's Dogma fans out there? Have any of you checked out Dragon's Dogma Online yet? If so, do you think it's worth the hassle of a VPN, or should we just all hold out for Dark Arisen's re-release? Lemme know!

I knew Austin had good taste in games. Dragon's Dogma has problems, really obvious ones, but there also isn't anything quite like it.

Why yes, I do think I will buy this game a third time. Fourth, if you count the time it was free on PS+.

I remember thinking it was a great game that just ran terribly without being a graphical powerhouse on consoles. I'm excited to see this coming to PC.

I'm really excited for this! Great game that didn't run super well on PS3. Hopefully it's a good port.

Oh... holy shit. I dunno if I should finish Dark Arisen on PS3 or just get it here then. Fuck it, I'll probably just get this later and replay it on PC. Love this goddamn game.

I love Dragon's Dogma(Its unique strengths rise waaay above the flaws, I think), but I don't play games on a computer. If anyone knows about the process of getting it with a japanese PSN account, and how it works out to play it in japanese, I want to know too. And as I mentioned on the forums just now, I'm looking forward to see what modders do to it.

This is the type of Remaster I can get behind. Not a wildly successful console exclusive for the same console next-generation, but a cult classic for a completely different/broader market.

There were some really interesting and also some really tedious things in that game. I really loved the way it felt when you hit a monster with it very liberal use of hit pauses that made shots feel really chunky.

I however haaaaated the tedium of running back and forth through the same areas without really good fast travel. Was the DLC for this really good? I know the ending to the core game was so batshit insane that I didn't want to keep going.

Dragon's Dogma is rad as fuck!

I totally want to check out Dragon's Dogma Online but I don't want to jump through the hoops of getting it going, if it were as easy as setting up PSO2, I might.

*Glances sideways to an unplayed Xbox 360 copy of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen*

Judging by the price I wouldn't expect much of an upgrade but it's a nice thing to have nonetheless. Capcom continues its PR offensive and we are reaping the benefits!

I would totally watch you mess around with the Japanese version of DDO as well, even if it's just wrestling with technical issues.

I love this game but I don't think, after having purchased it twice and gotten it on PS+ that its worth $30 to me personally. But I also want to see what this Dragon's Dogma Online is also about, so I'm really torn. @.@

Oh good. I haven't gotten around to playing this yet, and honestly at this point with the transition to new consoles and what not I didn't want to get it on PS3. So, This coming to PC is ideal.

Now let's just hope it's a good port.

This news made me rock hard. Goddamn is Dragon's Dogma THE most underrated game of last gen. Game is so so so fucking good. And Dark Arisen was a fucking phenomenal expansion pack.

@gaftra: The DLC added a difficult, massive dungeon(That reuses assets a ton. It's a bit similar to the Everfalls, but much bigger) with quite a few new enemies and quite a few larger/more dangerous versions of earlier enemies, with different enemy placements between runthroughs, as well as placing just a few of those new enemies in the open world itself. I think they also dole out the fast travel markers you can place and the stones you use to travel between them earlier, but I upgraded(aka: Bought Dark Arisen in addition to the original), and that resulted in me getting an eternal fast travel stone among other things. So it's difficult to judge how much simpler it is without that. The story for it, what little story there is, is a twist on what you learn during that original ending.

Only bad thing about Dark Arisen is that they changed the opening music to just the sombre piano music instead of sombre piano music followed by GREAT J-rock sounding music. And maybe that a few of those chimeras and cyclopses weren't exchanged for the other monsters.

This. Is. The. Best. Fucking. News.

I never finished the Dark Arisen expansion stuff, and this seems like the perfect way to do it.

DD:O looks cool, but you can't even throw NPCs in cities off cliffs, so what's the point?

@hassun: The game is great, but runs at a low resolution on consoles, and still has super spotty performance. It's hard to imagine the PC version being anything but a huge step up (especially if its comparable to Dragon's Dogma Online).

This game is so good! Can't wait to play it without the long loads and window borders from the PS3 version. One of the few games I won't mind buying 3x.

@austin_walker Patrick Kelepk :D

EDIT: Oh yeah, also interested in trying out Dragon's Dogma. Whenever I got a touch of Souls-fatigue and searched around for something "similar, but not too similar", I got pointed at DD. Then I had to point at my PC and say "that look like a 'play stay shon' to you, son?", but that didn't really solve anything...

I liked this game, but the lack of direction made me end up quitting. I honestly couldn't find out what to do next lol, but i really loved the combat and would like to see a sequel with a better quest system.

If the modding scene can fix some of the issues with the game, I'd happily give it a try. There's some great ideas in Dragon's Dogma, but I found them to be brought down by a variety of weird design choices.

@oursin_360: I felt similarly. There was a lot of potential there, but the aimlessness, along with the feeling of being the only person playing an MMO, really killed it for me.

Psyched for people who love this thing though.

I could not for the life of me get into DD. The controls always felt off and the quest lines/AI companions/town navigation was a nightmare to figure out. Definitely preferred the Souls games.

I never played it even though I was very interested when it was first announced and I later even got it through PS Plus, but at that point, I was kind of done with the PS3. If it's a good port, I could totally see me buying it.
