Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon Lands Next Spring

It's a bughunt, man, on your PS3 or 360!

Everyone gets excited when they hear the announcement of a sequel to a good game. How often do you see people getting excited for the sequel to a bad one?

Today is one of those days. Japanese publisher D3 has announced that Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, the sequel to the poorly controlled, ugly, shallow, and totally beloved third-person shooter Earth Defense Force 2017, is coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the Spring of 2011. D3 has also announced that this latest installment in the franchise will not be handled by Sandlot, the studio originally responsible for the EDF games. Instead, Insect Armageddon is being developed by Vicious Cycle, the North Carolina developer that brought you Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard.

These bugs are going to pay for messing up New Detroit.
These bugs are going to pay for messing up New Detroit.

== TEASER ==Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon will once again drop you into the role of the less-than-capable Earth Defense Force, a multinational task force that’s technically supposed to save the Earth from destruction by giant bugs. It’s hard to tell though, since the real specialty of the EDF seems to be laying waste to every bug, skyscraper and bus in a two-mile radius. But, as the last game taught us, if you blow up enough cities, you'll eventually get the bugs, which is good, because the giant ants are back, and the safety of the Earth can only be preserved by blowing up every city on the planet. In this case, you’ll join an EDF squad stationed in the United States, and work to rid the city of New Detroit from the alien insect menace.

New Goddamn Detroit.

In addition to a brand new campaign, Insect Armageddon is adding a slew of new features to the game, with a particular focus on co-op multiplayer. Players will be able to go through the entire campaign online with up to three other EDF soldiers, bringing with them new vehicles, new armor sets, and over 150 different weapons. And, if wave-based combat is more your speed, EDF will also include a new “Swarm” mode that teams six human players against a horde of giant insects, competing in increasingly tougher firefights in order to ensure the survival of New Detroit.

Make no mistake, though; Earth Defense Force 2017 doesn’t have a cult following because it was a good game. No, EDF is beloved because it is a profoundly stupid game, a bad Michael Bay movie in video game form. It was a game where your controller spent more time rumbling than not, where the screen was constantly filled with fire and explosions and acid and giant ants and robots and collapsing buildings and nonsense. It was a game dumber than it was broken, and that’s being generous. But it was dumb on a grand scale; It had more “dumb per pixel” (or DPP) than just about any other game on this generation of hardware. And it was cheap too; Earth Defense Force 2017 retailed in the US at $40. You could probably find a copy of 2017 nowadays for $15 at most retailers, if you want to get a sense of the particular flavor of EDF. It was the perfect game to love ironically, and only a handful of other releases have come since that vie for that title.

 This screen needs more bugs.
 This screen needs more bugs.

But that leads us to the important question; do you want a “good” sequel to Earth Defense Force 2017, or a true sequel? If EDF is a straight-laced Third Person Shooter, is that going to be able to draw in the same small group of fans as the previous entry? Or does the game need to be dumber, more chaotic, more ridiculous, uglier, and trashier than its predecessor? And can an American studio deliver that particular blend of stupidity and silliness that made the previous game a cult hit? You don’t have much time to decide if the sequel will provide the bug-killing fix you need; the insect invasion lands on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next Spring.

the last Earth Defense Force game on the 360 is one of my favorite guilty gaming pleasures. i mean come on, you could hit a giant ant into the stratosphere with a shotgun from like a mile away or blow up an entire building with one volley from a grenade launcher. its ridiculous!

Does New Detroit have Juggalos?

EDIT: I have to give the new developer the benefit of the doubt; I love EDF too much (non-ironically).

"RELOAD FAILED"...I still don't completely understand why the AI ever says this(especially since the main character never has to reload manually).

I think'd I'd be more worried if they got a "good" developer in to make the game, can you imagine EDF as created by Epic or Valve? That would be awful; I think the fact that they went with a B studio is the right choice for a B game and if Sandalot can't/won't make it that this lot are as good as any.

There are a few things they can do to make this a worthy sequal:
 - ridiculous number of weapons, of which half should be useless but awesome, ie rockets that are slower than you
- no characters, just random npc's shouting nonsence
- insects, spiders, robots and ufo's
- no attempt at trying to explain why insects and spiders are fighting alongside giant robots and ufo's

The only thing that needs to be different from the original is the frame-rate, the achievements and maybe vehicles which you can actually use.

Well, giving it to the Matt Hazard team makes sense if you would want to insure a "good bad" game.
Would be kind of funny though if it turned out to be the greatest bug killing game ever :p

I hope that means Sandlot are working on bringing their Wii game over from Japan. It's Nintendo published so they must like it over there.

was so stoked for this until i heard new devs.

I hope they don't take this down the serious route..

Still would be nice to have vehicles that are actually maneuverable and durable.

All this needs is MP online. the above and that is it. don't change it.

I have a sweet idea for MP aswel.  Like akrid hunt on lost planet.

1 player is the one of the Giant Ant or Spider or Godzilla bosses and all the other players have to take him out in choppers and tanks and on foot etc.

Fuck you EDF wasn't broken. Well except for the vehicle parts... still, I love the hell out of that game. Where else in the video game medium can you fight giant ants constantly. NOWHERE.

It's hard to make a "so bad it's good" game, much harder than to make a similar movie. I'm kinda skeptical about a sequel because, much like with movies, if you're TRYING to make something cheesy/corny/so bad it's good, usually it just turns out bad.

If this game doesn't have the Pale-Wing then it's not worth playing.

Very few people know that EDF was actually a remake of the first game of the series, which was released on the PS2 and exclusive to Japan.  The second game of the series, Global Defence Force, takes place chronologically after EDF did and featured a jetpacking, magical energy flinging, anime robot girl.  Alas, it only came out in Japan and Europe, and never had a grassroots internet campaign to boost sales.  But it was awesome. It was better than EDF 2017 by a large margin.

The first game was a glorious celebration of all that irony and fun, who needs grey cover based 3rd person shooters when you have EDF. It's a game that you either "get" or you don't, whatever the sequal turns out like it's a 1st day purchase for me, although I am entirely in agreement with Matt's thoughts on whether this US studio is up to the task of Defending the earth. Still high hopes and co-op is always gd (as long as split-screen is still in their)
Slight concern about their choice to set it in one city though, really hope it has the depth and variety of levels the original had (maybe minus the damn tunnels, they got old fast).
EDF!
                   EDF!
                                     EDF!

I'm happy for you guys that dig these games, but I can't fucking stand them. Shitty controls ruin every video game experience for me. Plus, somebody said it best when they referred to each level as a "grind"--something else I hate in games. But if you dudes really love this stuff, hey, have fun.

@iAmJohn:  Thx for the reply. Glad to see they're still going strong.  I found a trailer for their Wii game,  Zangeki no Reginleiv:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlOnUEYJ5WI

It's like an EDF version of Final Fantasy. Weepy face indeed if it stays in Japan.

When the first Earth Defense Force 2017 came out me and my roommate played it for hours and hours for weeks on end. Eventually we got to a series of levels where they were all randomly generated underground tunnels with a single texture covering everything. We'd constantly get lost in the tunnels and find ourselves back at the entrance multiple times due to the lack of any direction or playability. We eventually got stuck on one level for the last time and gave up. But we loved those ridiculous guns that would increase in ridiculousness with every level.

You can't make a good sequel on a game like that. A game that is bad-good, will never turn around. If they attempt to make it good.. it will turn bad-bad, because the underlying quality to EDF is the fact that it's a bad game.

I watched a couple of gameplay trailers for this and am now very skeptical.. I loved edf 2017 but the new game looks like it's trying to actually be serious, which seems like a mistake.  Just listening to the voices in the new game made me sadface ... but then again, I really hate the voice for Cyrus in Dawn of War 2...  dunno why developers seem to think it's a great voice.

here it is...
