EA's Giving Away Dragon Age: Origins

In anticipation of the new Dragon Age, the original is now free.

No Caption Provided

If you've ever had an inkling to play Dragon Age: Origins, there's no better time than the present, since Electronic Arts is giving the game away for free on Origin right now.

There are no strings attached to the deal, unless you consider signing up for Origin to be a dealbreaker. Once you've claimed access to the game, it's yours forever. The deal won't last forever, however, so it might be worth logging in and grabbing it!

Cool I suppose, I've already got it though.

And signing up for Origin isn't really that minor a price in my book.

Is there any way to redeem my CD-Keys for the disc version of the ultimate edition on Origin? Would be nice to have a version with cloud saves.

I think so? My Ultimate Edition keys worked with Origin at least.

Bought this on console for mere tuppence a short while ago. It... hasn't aged well. Imagine it's a very different experience on PC, though.

@fisk0: Yes. I did this with my copies of dragon age origins collector's edition, dragon age awakening, mass effect 1 and mass effect 2 collector's edition. Just add the key.

I love the first Dragon Age. The only game where your choices truly have deep impact within the world. Very much worth playing.

He played this one for a long time as well. I think I remember him saying 90 hours on the podcast and that was before the big expansion.

This was the first game I preloaded on Steam. Was kind of pissed about that day one dlc stuff (sign of things to come I guess) but it was still a great game. I played Dragon Age 2 recently just to see if it was as bad as I remembered it and yep, still a travesty.

Maby giving away Origins is a good indication that they're aware that's a far superior game and that could bode well for Inquisition. Fingers crossed.

I already own it, but that is still probably a smart decision by EA, unless this new game turns out to be terrible, then they're just reminding people how awesome the first game is compared to... everything else with the "Dragon Age" name attached to it.

Still, not gonna fault them for giving stuff away for free.

Origin is slowly becoming the "Games I've already played" library. Which is fine, I'd rather have them on my PC somewhere than keeping cases around on shelves.

Dragon Age 1 is the one worth playing, that's nice! DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PLAY DRAGON AGE 2, HOWEVER.

And for my money, I won't be playing 3 or whatever they're calling the new one until either it gets a huge sale or goes off Origin (so a sale, b/c they will never give up that shitty service).

Origin - a quality software that somehow manages to take 95% of my CPU power when it is downloading a single game and doing nothing else. Yeah, considering the price of electricity, I think I'll pass this one.

There are loads of games that give players that amount of freedom, Dragon Age: Origins is simply one of the few modern ones, alongside Alpha Protocol and the Fallout/Elder Scrolls games -- KOTOR even to a similar extent. Point is back in their heydey that's just how CRPGs were.

I seriously don't get the origin hate. If i is using 90% of your memory to download a game how much memory you got? 2 gig? It is no more intrusive than steam is and while the UI is a little worse.... who really cares? Or are you telling me you look at a third party out of game UI tons of the time when playing video games?

Time to stop beating a dead horse, it was pretty over the top to start with, years down the road after Origin has more than worked out it's worst kinks it is just plain silly.

Not sure why people still talk shit about Origin. It is no more intrusive than Steam and it works about 99% as well as that platform. I can understand the dislike for GFWL and U-Play. I have used both of those services when required to play specific games and they really are a pain.

BF3 and DAO are terrific games that still hold up very well today. Sims 2 Complete and Peggle are well known to be solid casual games. They even threw in Wing Commander 3. These are pretty good offerings to be free for everyone.

It was only about a year ago where EA offered Mirror's Edge, Dead Space 1, Dead Space 3,Crysis 2, Brutal Legend, Burnout Paradise and Medal of Honor all for $1, which then went to charity. They gave away Origin AND Steam codes for each of those games (except DS3) for the $1.

Hate on EA for its business practices if you want, but Origin itself is fine.

I'll always stick to Steam, just because their library is so much bigger and whatnot, but...

...and don't tell anyone I said this...

Origin is leagues ahead of Steam in design and usability in every way, from their front-end to their customer service. Across the board, it's a better, less-bloated, program.

As a piece of software, I think that Origin blows Steam away. I like that Origin doesn't have dumb gimmicks like trading cards and whatnot. I do wish that there were more community features, but for simply playing and buying games, I think Origin is great.

They try at least... but too many games come off as way to binary in their choices or how it groups your decisions. Origins is one of the better written games I've played that deals in shades of grey in a way that lets the user draw their own conclusion without any pretense of "morality" hanging over their head.

Even if that is no exaggeration, how long does it take you to download a game and how often do you see yourself getting Origin games in the future? If what you are saying is true, and it takes you three full days to download DAO with a 56K modem, you are out what...50 cents? That is assuming your computer would not have been in use for those three days if not for the Origin download, otherwise the download itself is hitting your wallet even less.

I have DA: Origins on Steam already, and DA2 on Origin. Is there any cross-over or other benefits between the two games that would make it worth while downloading again on the same platform?

I think they put one of the Dead Space games on there as well. I like this version of EA. Desperate enough for customers to give away their back catalog. Nothing to complain about there really.

And to all those people saying Origin sucks, it has worked perfectly well for me whenever I have used it. I prefer to support Valve and I also prefer having all my games in a single location just for ease of use, but if I was forced to use Origin instead of Steam from now on I wouldn't be especially bothered outside of there being far fewer sales on Origin.

Who are 'they'? The examples I mentioned? Because if you're talking about games like Mass Effect, then yes most definitely. But Alpha Protocol at the very least is actually rather organic in how it lets you make your decisions and doesn't paint everything in black and white. Or... blue and red.

Not bad, this is the best dragon age. DLC was sweet, but this is more than sufficient for a FREE god damn game. Dragon Age 2 never happened.
