Get Your Glowsticks: Wipeout HD Coming September 25

Zero-G techno music, here I come!

I can totally hear my brain!
I can totally hear my brain!
Along with Tekken 2, Wipeout XL was one of the major catalysts in my purchase of a PlayStation. Get a couple cocktails in me and I'll ramble endlessly about the bracing sense of speed, the slick ship designs, the (then) uniquely futuristic graphic design work of The Designers Republic, and of course, the severely zeitgeist-y Astralwerks soundtrack. Wipeout XL also marked my first exposure to Red Bull, the net results of which are still being determined.

So needless to say, it brings me great joy to report that Sony announced this morning through its lovely PlayStation Blog that Wipeout HD (I don't care if Sony itself spells it wipEout, I've got no patience for dumb-ass capitalization) is coming to the PlayStation Network on September 25 for the low, low price of $19.99. In addition to some hot 1080p graphics, Wipeout HD promises five gameplay modes, online play for up to eight players, offline splitscreen, 8 reversable tracks, optional SIXAXIS support, Trophy support, more European techno music than you can shake a stick at, and custom soundtrack support.

A HUGE package for $20.  You'd be dumb not to buy this.

Is it an update of the PSP game or an entirely new Wipeout?

20 Bucks! That seems like a really good deal....though the mention of "8 reversible tracks" is what gets me. Does that mean their are only 8 tracks in the game, period?
Maybe that's a dumb question. Still, that explains the low low price of the game. Still, big ups to Sony for pushing the "release new, full games over PSN."

You know, maybe the racing is like a metaphor for life, you know? There's jumps and sometimes you hit a wall 'cause you didn't twist the controller right and, uh. What?

Pass the Hemp Milk, amigo.

can't wait to try out zone mode!  $20 for all of these sound awesome to me.  In fact sounds better than another racing title that came with one more track, no split screen, no custom soundtracks, etc (Motorstorm). and cost a full $60.

Isn't this a remake of older Wipeout tracks in HD?

Wipeout is the only game that I could imagine working even half-way well with Sixaxis controls since the vehicular gameplay can make use of it . I've never been too great at the series (especially without real analog sticks on PSP) ... perhaps Sixaxis aided controls could help on a few of the tougher turns.  Who the hell needs tires anyway?

Can't wait. As someone who skipped out on Pulse I guess it doesn't matter that these are refurbished tracks as long as there is online play and different modes (Let's all drop acid to Zones!).

Yep, "What the hell is Red Bull" for me didn't surface until about five or so years later from this game when I started popping a can or two a day.  I didn't know it was a drink then.  I thought it was a game engine like Havok or something.  I go back to play XL now and its an "I get it" moment.

Still I have been waiting for Wipeout HD for a good long two years now since it was first announced.  I love what Liverpool has kept true to the series, and having a truly viable way to play multiplayer or splitscreen with this series has been way long time coming.  Less than two weeks!  See you all online.
