Giant Bomb's 2014 Game of the Year Awards: Day Two Text Recap

Giant Bomb's 2014 award ceremony continues with Best Story, Best Music, Most Disappointing Game, and Best Short-Time Game.

After the first day of awards went so well, we figured we might as well do it all over again! So here is the second day of our awards with four more categories. Remember to watch the video component if you want to see us revisit another game in Quick Look form along with some various hijinks. And if you want to know more about how we came to these infallible conclusions, the podcast contains our full deliberations.

Best Story

The Fall

Not everyone comes to games to experience a compelling story. “I will avenge [insert emotional tie] by mysteriously gaining new abilities and by the by save the world. Oh, also I was fated to do this since [insert flashback].” The rarity of a well-done, original narrative integrated into complementary gameplay speaks to how difficult it is. Though only in its first episode, The Fall manages to weave a tightly told tale into gameplay and visuals that support and propel you through a science fiction adventure that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

No Caption Provided

The premise for the game is that you have suffered an incapacitating fall (out of the sky, I should note) and ARID, your combat suit’s artificial intelligence, has taken over all functions for your now unconscious pilot. ARID. has one primary function: seek medical assistance and protect her pilot.

With the actual human pilot asleep at the wheel, many of the combat suit’s systems are offline and locked out. Fortunately, ARID is able to use a loophole that allows certain systems to come online if her pilot finds himself in imminent danger. This ruthless logic plays out in stellar fashion as ARID. makes her way through the derelict robot repurposing facility she and her pilot have crash landed on. The encounters with other A.I. are smartly written, and you’ll quickly realize that not everything in abandoned-robot-decomissioning land is functioning as intended. In fact, your A.I. is rather shocked and dismayed to discover other points of view standing in her way. It’s these battles of logic ARID. finds herself engaged in that really make this one memorable and the best story this year.

Runners-up: Broken Age: Act 1, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Best Music

Luftrausers

No Caption Provided

There's a pumping, grinding march to Luftrausers' soundtrack that just can't be beat. Finnish musician Jukio "KOZILEK" Kallio has assembled a militaristic theme that absolutely pushes Vlambeer's shooter to new heights. It also takes that main theme and contorts it a number of different ways, essentially giving you a different remix that depends entirely on which different parts you use to assemble your rauser. If you're the sort of person who sets the plane parts to random, this means you're essentially getting a different take on the theme each time you play. It's the sort of theme that makes you want to get up and stomp around, go for a run, clean up the apartment, get things done. Or maybe you just want to blow up a million planes and boats while nodding your head. Either way.

Here, take a listen:

Runners-up: Shovel Knight, Transistor

Most Disappointing Game

Watch_Dogs

It probably says something about 2014 that this ended up being one of the more contentious categories. As a category that ends up speaking to the gulf between expectations and delivery, no gulf was wider than Watch_Dogs.

No Caption Provided

Watch_Dogs started setting up expectations early, with E3 trailers and a certain coyness on Ubisoft's part about which platforms, exactly, the game would appear on. Of course, the eventual list ended up included a pair of platforms that hadn't even been announced yet, and minds raced. The trailers got picked apart as people tried to figure out what, exactly, the new platforms would be capable of. Watch_Dogs ended up becoming a symbol for all things new, a new piece of intellectual property that, hopefully, would help usher in a new era.

Flash forward past a delay into 2014 and, well, when Watch_Dogs was finally released, players found a new game that called upon too many different facets of the Ubisoft open-world template. With action that often felt clunky, mission design that got pretty repetitive, and a hacking motif that sounded a lot cooler before the game was released, Watch_Dogs was a real disappointment.

At least it worked?

Runners-Up: Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Destiny

Best Short-Time Game

Threes!

No Caption Provided

With most of our staff in San Francisco and New York, several of us are usually on the lookout for something to play during our public transportation commute. This year, nothing grabbed more of us than the deceivingly simple Threes. Its core is adequately explained by the short tutorial - two 3 tiles merge together to make a 6, two 6 tiles merge together to make a 12, etc. Once you’ve spent some time with the game, however, its depth becomes apparent. Terms like number highways, checkerboarding, and the corner strategy aren’t taught by the tutorial, but they’re concepts that high-level players should learn if they want to up their position on the leaderboards.

Because of its surprising amount of strategy, Threes can easily turn into hours-long bouts of “after this turn, I’m going to bed. No, this one…” That said, it’s also perfect as a quick time-killer during a morning commute. Threes can certainly hook you for extended sessions, but nothing from 2014 is better if you just have a little time to kill.

Runners-up: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Hitman Go

It's January 2016, and as I spend some free time wandering through GOTY awards past, I still can't get over how they named Watch_Dogs the most disappointing game in the same year that the Master Chief Collection and Assassin's Creed: Unity came out. Watch_Dogs was a pretty well made open-world game. The reason people think of it as disappointing is that it was the victim of the Launch Hype Phenomenon.

Almost all the games that have ever come out, especially action games, have tried to market themselves as some kind of mind-blowing experience that will change gaming forever. People are generally smart enough to realize this could never be the case, and adjust their expectations to be more realistic. But for some reason, whenever a new console generation comes out, the gaming community always seems to pick one single game and buy into the hype completely and at face value. With the 360/PS3 generation, it was probably Perfect Dark Zero, and with the Xbone/PS4 generation, it was Watch_Dogs. The difference is that while PDZ turned out to be kind of mediocre, Watch_Dogs is actually pretty good... it's just not the second coming of gaming.

I'm Deusoma, and this has been a grumbling complaint that no one will ever read, and certainly no one cares about by this point. But boy, it sure felt good to write! :D

I still can't believe that fucking Brad somehow weaseled Destiny out of the top spot for "Most Disappointing Game". I genuinely can't believe Jeff went along with that, especially when Jeff is usually the one to strongarm his opinions into becoming the group opinion (for example, Jeff ridiculing Donkey Kong Country music that they listened to, out of the context of the level, on a shitty phone speaker).

Anyway, it's still fucking bonkers that Vinny or somebody randomly said "Can I take The Banner Saga off the list?" for Best Story and nobody objected. Like, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT. The story and writing in The Banner Saga are its strongest features, compared to the functional but bland combat and the great-looking-but-super-light-on-actual-motion art. It easily should've made top 3, and it's baffling that even after multiple people played it, they were fine with it not making the list and no one even seemed to complain about it being dropped.

Wait, what?

The Fall for best story? A game that did nothing that various other scifi games haven't done before? Surely you jest. Yes, it's a good story. Yes, it's a good troid. But best story?

I'm not saying Shadow of Mordor or Wolfenstein or Watch Dogs or Far Cry or Walking Dead or other games had better stories, but this is a ridiculous statement.

Man, i'm really wondering how the Best Story argument plays out in the podcast. The story of The Fall is decent, but the only really outstanding moment is at the very end, followed up by a lame, unsatisfying "To be continued". Throw on top of that a limited cast of fairly bland characters--none of whom have any kind of arc bar the main character's cliffhanger revelation-- and an unchanging setting that doesn't really get developed past the first thirty minutes, and i'm left scratching my head how somehow this is the best story of the year while The Banner Saga (filled with memorable characters and interesting choices) and Kentucky Route Zero (which continues to be utterly superb in terms of well-developed characters and beautiful thematic hits) didn't even get nominated.

This GOTY debate was the first time I'd heard of The Fall.

There was both a Quick Look and a Worth Playing of it on Giant Bomb. Which I didn't watch because it didn't look that interesting. After this list got posted I bought it on Steam and finished it in one sitting (about 3 hours). I totally agree with it winning. The writing is so good and smart in it. And something I haven't seen tackled this way before. Absolutely looking forward to the next part now.

I don't think Threes is nearly as good as everyone is making it out to be and I don't get Luftrausers after trying to play it for an hour or so. But hey. I'm interested in checking out The Fall at least.

EDIT: I loved Tropical Freeze and I'm a huge fan of listening to the old DKC Super Nintendo music (since those are some of my favorite games ever), but I just don't think TF has that good of music. I was stoked when I saw that David Wise was back on board, but it's kind of underwhelming PBS jungle kids music. Seriously. I don't get the gushing about it. Mario 3D World was better, as was Mario Kart 8.

@amyggen: What was in the Watch_Dogs trailer that deserved the hype? It looked like a Ubisoft open world game (and everything that has come to imply) with lite hacking elements. If being charitable it looked maaaaybe like Ubisoft's take on a GPA, +hacking. And of those two we got more of the former. I still, to this day, do not get why people pinned their hopes on it. And THEN it was delayed, and it began to seem to be having a troubled dev cycle... And it was Ubisoft. I just... Don't get why the hype existed.

I love that most disappointing game was the most contentious category. The award easily goes to Destiny, for me. My expectations for many hours of sci-fi fun with friends were completely dashed upon actually playing the grindfest.

To anyone getting bent completely out of shape by the GB crew's GOTY picks (or any site's picks, for that matter), remember that the best part about GOTY lists is that if you don't like their subjective, personal choices, you can go make your own list with the same categories and put whatever the hell you want on it. Have fun!

People were so fucking hyped at the initial Watch_Dogs trailer. It looked like something new and exciting, and EVERYONE was talking about it as the game of that E3.

On the other hand, I feel that everyone was fairly sceptical of Destiny all the way from announcement to release. "It still mostly looks like Halo meets Borderlands." seemed to be the sentiment that I heard pretty consistently.

Combine that with the fact that a decent number of people actually seem to care about Destiny, while nobody gives a shit about Watch_Dogs, and I think they made the right choice.

The Fall deserves this category. I was initially thinking that Dragon Age Inquisition should win, but the unsatisfying way it ends shot it in the foot for me (still a great game, but a lackluster ending). Transistor is the only other game I think that could fit in this category, but the story was too vague.

The Fall is legitimately wonderful, and I would seriously encourage everyone to buy it. The writing is brilliant.

I loved The Fall so much, gives me chills just thinking about the atmosphere in that game. (Fake neighborhood zone in particular, just wow) FYI the story could stand alone, even if no more episodes are released. Looks like they just released a big patch last week so I'm sure there are no worries about episode 2.

Go get this during the Steam sale, it's only $5!

@amyggen: If people were so hyped over the trailer, I don't see how they could play the final game and be so disappointed. Everything in that initial trailer is in the released version of the game, even that mission is mostly the same.

An open world game with a hacking hook is what they pitched and that's what we got. It's a very bland game has the same crap side missions every Ubisoft open world game has. If people thought it would be something else, I don't see how that's Ubisoft's fault. I never saw Ubisoft say or release any trailers that contradicted what the final game was.

But the next massive game from Bungie being a loot driven shooter with barely any loot and the worst parts of an MMORPG thrown on top of it, that's a massive disappointment. Especially coming from the company that has made a multibillion dollar franchise like Halo.

I think the difference between Watch Dogs and Destiny is that Watch Dogs isn't a great game and everyone generally agrees with that. Destiny isn't a great game either, but Brad loves games with monotonous grinds and would defend it until his last breath. It's easier to call a game no one will defend the most disappointing compared to a game that has a staunch defender.

I'm firmly in the camp of Destiny for most disappointing for the reasons Patrick/Vinny and others noted. They flat out lied about it being a competent single-player story-driven game in the vein of Halo. That pretty much eliminates the primary reason I'd want to play it and kills a big portion of what makes Bungie games popular. The problems with its grind / MMO features / loot make it all the worse.

Once Watch Dogs got delayed my disappointment with it was already done. It only carried the hopes of a generation when it was a launch title and the only interesting console pack-in.

But what's going to be really entertaining is watching everyone's heads explode when Brad tries to push for it on the site top ten list.

@triplestan: Is KRZ complete? I think the GB GOTY rule was that episodic games are only considered when all episodes are released.

Not yet, but I think it's a "when they make the rules" kind of thing - if that rule was absolute then both The Fall and to a lesser extent Broken Age would be ineligible this year. From the point of view that Episode 3 was "the" Kentucky Route Zero release this year, I think the story told within was most definitely among the very best of the year.

I guess the more I think about it the more I feel that in a sense I didn't know anything about Destiny and thus did not actually have a lot to be disappointed in when it turned out to be a really mechanically sound, if shallow, shooter.

Whereas the hype train for Watch Dogs was kind of out of control and its inevitable crash hit way harder.

Destiny actually is my GOTY.. 220 hours into it.

Content & story wise, yes it's a disappointment.

But the sheer playability & addicting nature of that game makes it FAR FAR from being the year's most disappointing game.

Tropical Freeze has an incredible soundtrack, especially while you're playing the game and looking at the beautiful art.

Giant Bomb's music category usually comes down to a few cool sections of a couple tunes. Poor Dan had to find that out the hard way.

Alright Luftrausers, i'ma let you finish, but...

Seriously, I am a little bummed that Transistor couldn't pull through for the one award I thought it had in the bag. Honour to be nominated, I suppose! I'm guessing Jeff got loud about the Luft and everyone kind of just backed down, or the staff just wasn't as moved by the music in Transistor as I was. I still remember that first Transistor trailer man...it won best music for me the instant I heard it.
