Giant Bomb Sells Out

The end of the world is upon us--we've started running advertising.

It's been a little while since I checked in with you on our plans for advertising. Actually, I guess it's more of a plan to keep the lights on and keep Giant Bomb up and running by ensuring that we've got some money coming in.

Well, today is the day that we can say that there's some money coming through the door. Today's the day that you can find a bit of advertising around the site in the form of an MPU--that's the secret codeword that means "Flash-based rectangle that wants you to buy or do something."

But you won't actually see that ad too often. Part of our philosophy here is that the ads will be a little more effective if they aren't completely frustrating and obtrusive. So we aren't stickering up every single corner of the site with boxes and animated men with chainsaw-guns saying "Pardon me, have you heard of this Gears of the War 2 video game we're releasing next month?!!?!?!" Instead, it seems like a tasteful reminder that says "excuse me, not to interrupt, but I felt you should know about the ongoing conflict between the humans and the Locust over on planet Sera."

You'll see any given ad on the site no more than a few times a day--and then it simply won't appear for the rest of that day. Furthermore, our plan states that less than 40 percent of our pages will have ads on them at all. Though, considering the current state of the economy and how that's impacting the advertising market, I don't expect we'll actually hit that 40 percent mark anytime soon.

As for our involvement in the ad process, it's limited to absolute veto power. All of the advertising will cross through us before it goes onto the site, and if there's something we're not comfortable with, like an awful game or ugly, noisy ads or something, we intend to shoot it down.

We also have a few more ideas on money and ways you can help keep us in business that we'll be looking at in the coming months, including merchandise. Actually, I'm staring at a box full of hoodies with Luchadeer on the back right now. I should probably figure out what we're going to do with those... hmm...

Anyway, before I get too far off-topic here, I'll just close by saying that we've spent a lot of time formulating plans to ensure that we can run ads on this site and cover our costs without ruining the site in the process. That said, we definitely value your feedback on this stuff. If the advertising is way too crazy for you--or if you think we're handling it properly--let us know.  Thanks.

As long as ads go past you guys at the Bomb I'm absolutly fine with it, you guys are real dudes and for once you can say "get that crap away from our website". I trust your experience and I'm excited you're actualy getting some income, I was wondering where your seemingly endless amount of money was coming from.

Oh, and I'll take some GiantBomb merchendice of your hands if you'd be so kind, I think with my help we can leverage the potential verticle in the multi-million-dollar clothing industery. Prehaps mugs; key-chains; hats and other exciting parafanalia.

As long as you don't put annoying pop up adds or post them on ever corner of a web page, it's all good and fine with me.

Jeff, I'm very happy to see you guys finally "sell out". That's what media companies are for. The more advertizement the better. I say why stop at 40% make it 100%. As long as they are not intrusive I don't see a reason to stop at 40%. The way I see it, the more money you guys get the more features we'll see on the site (hint a regular video show). Anyway, good luck with all of that.

Not to be a party crasher, but this page, suggests you're going to have slightly more intrusive ads in the future. I personally don't mind, but you keep saying you'll be honest about it, but I've never seen any official mention about the front page skins, or the video page skins, or the podcast sponsorships etc. which you obviously plan on doing, based on that page.

I'm fine with it, as long as my viewing of the great content isn't halted at any point, you can advertise wherever you want on the site, but you keep telling us that you're being honest with us about it, yet you're obviously not telling us the whole truth, just part of the truth.

Yet another reason GiantBomb is #1. Not only are you genuinely concerned with the community's opinion on the advertisements, but you're totally being conservative with them, an approach that I think will pay off and possibly even trickle down into other sites soon, hopefully. Basically, I love the approach you're taking to ads, and I think this is just another reason GiantBomb is amazing.

I think I speak for a lot of the members here by saying offering GB swag and other ways to keep you guys afloat would be totally chill, I absolutely would love a way to give you guys some money, especially if there's a Luchadeer hoodie in it for me :D

We all understand that you guys have to eat. Advertising is something that has become a staple for the Internet so i doubt many people will be bothered by this. I respect the fact that you're (saying) you'll be tasteful with them so they won't be completely intrusive.

And dude..... Luchadeer hoodies. Seriously.

Your ideas for advertising sound very good.  Keep it clean without too much intrusion and it doesn't bother me (hell, I might even click a link or two when it's done right).  I would also love to see an option to subscribe without advertising.  I know it's a bit of a hassle to deal with certain aspects of that, and I'd rank it as a "nice to have" rather than a "must have" feature.

last thing i wanna see is you guys going out of business so im 1000% fine with the ads  hell do the plastering the borders of your site if u need to once i hear that you guys have enough money to do what you guys do best and still have absolute power over the suits so that we make sure another conspiracy happens im fine with that
hell merchandise costs money to make and if u guys dont cover on that costs.......well lets not think about that

also i dont know if you guys will be willing to do this or if you guys dont like it but do like what wikipedia does and leave like a donation page where we can send you money IF WE WANT TO   because yeh merch is good but ive got too much swag as it is :)

imo if the ad is about the inpending release of any computer game on any system , you can have as many as you want , if you can manage to keep the ad's video game industry based , put as many as you like if it means the site stays open and the GB guys get the money they deserve to get , so they can buy more games and make a weekly show maybe ???? or is that asking abit much lol

More power to ya'. In fact, I'll even turn off AdBlock Plus for you guys as a gesture of goodwill. ;)

From the looks of your media kit setup, the ads won't be too grabby - I'm not all too thrilled about the ones in the search drop-down, unless they're programmed to only show up when I'm searching for something in a similar category, but if you have the space, why not use it, right? I'm all for you guys making money off your own site, and from the sounds of it, the greater portion of the audience agrees. Go forth with our blessing. :)

Advertising doesn't necessarily ruin a site, but it can definitely be annoying and obtrusive.

I'm glad GiantBomb won't let that happen.

As long as it's not as crazy as IGN (where your entire window must play a stupid full-screen Flash ad before you can actually see anything on the site), I'm fine.

Nice guys, I don't mind the ads, but, how are you dealing with adblock with firefox? Lots of people have it now... do you get paid less since the ads don't show up with firefoxers or something?

I was actually wondering how you guys were keeping this site up, travelled to tokya etc.  I have no issue with ad . I only hate when an ad starts before a video. Thats is total BS for people like me with horrible net speeds.

Otherwise im cool. how were you guys keeping this place afloat anyways? Alot of savings eh jeff?

Methods to incorporate advertising in a smart and generally unobtrusive fashion can very well pay off.  Look at Google and its success.  So far things seems fine.   I love the site.  Well done.

Hey thats the way the game works AND your not real play-a unless you know how to work it. Any who, I saw the Gears of War 2 ad and its preety good and doesn't interrupt anything vital, so thats pretty cool. I would suggest puting up in the Flash rectangles some kickass gameplay footage to attract more. I'm just saying.

I love how you are reasonably taking ads instead of throwing as much crap on the site as possible.  Keep up the great work! I'll be clicking on them just to give you hits not because I care about the ads.

Oh and you can send one of those hoodies my way.  That'd be great way to give back to your community. :)

Hmm, people have been conditioned to tune-out banner ads from using myspace, etc.  Can't you get paid more money by shilling products yourself like Howard Stern does?   Quick little commercials like the Too Human video will get tons of clicks.  Don't waste Vinny's filmmaking skillz!!
