Giant Bomb's 2014 Game of the Year Awards: Day Five Text Recap

Our awards come to a conclusion with Best Horror Game, PLEASE STOP, Worst Game, and... Best Game! Yayyyyy!

Well, that's just about it from us here at Giant Bomb. Enjoy what's left of your 2014, check out today's mammoth podcast and the conclusion to our video documentary, and we'll be back at you with fresh faces, fresh places, and fresh... spaces? For 2015? OK, that doesn't really make any sense. Hey, just have a good time and stay safe out there. Thanks for checking out our awards!

Best Horror Game

P.T.

No Caption Provided

While big-budget video games forgot about horror for a few years, independent developers picked up the slack. Amnesia: The Dark Descent remains worthy of horror's crown, but P.T. reminded us what happens when unlimited resources are thrown at a horror experience. P.T. simply asks players to walk down the most detailed hallway ever created for a video game and see what happens. Teaser, demo, whatever--it was the scariest thing made in 2014.

The Silent Hills connection makes it even more fascinating; no one's given a damn about Silent Hill in years. Konami hasn't treated the seminal horror series very well, but it hasn't stopped it from making new games every so often. For whatever reason, perhaps out of desperation to do something new, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima decided to take Silent Hill under his wing, and unleashed P.T. on us this year.

Thank you.

Every time you walk down the hallway, something changes. Or maybe it doesn't? A closed door is now open. Some floorboards creak in the distance. A baby wails around the corner. Shadowy figures watch from the floor above. A bloody casket, wired to the ceiling, bangs back and forth. P.T.'s repetition lulls players into lowered expectations, and finds terrifying success over and over. It uses surprise to terrify.

P.T. literally stands for Playable Teaser, and it's a nightmarish glimpse into what Kojima and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro are crafting for Silent Hills, a game that's most likely years off. Even if Silent Hills doesn't pan out and the series remains in creative limbo, we'll always have P.T. That hallway will never go away, beckoning the daring to make one more trip through. Who knows what's waiting this time?

Runners-up: Neverending Nightmares, Alien: Isolation

PLEASE STOP

Shipping Broke-Ass Games

Look, we could get into some exhaustive list of messed-up games and break down why broken games ship and how that's still not OK, but let's just be blunt. We're all aware of the issues faced by many different games this year. It's unacceptable. Stop shipping broke-ass games, you idiots, you're messing it up for everyone.

Runners-Up: Sonic the Fucking Hedgehog, Ubisoft's Standardized Open-World Template

Worst Game

Ghostship: Aftermath

No Caption Provided

As we scoured Steam for games to Quick Look, we came across a reminder that it wasn’t just big-budget triple-A games that were busted this year. Ghostship: Aftermath tries to ape the spooky space vibe of Alien and Event Horizon, but instead offers up the glitchiest, most tedious experience of the year.

Every element of the game reeks of low-budget slapdashery, from the laughable voice-over work to the unlicensed use of actual Coke and Pepsi logos. It tries to keep the action fresh as the entire ship is randomly generated between deaths, but this means having to listen to the same unskippable cutscenes time and time again. If you can survive long enough to get to the actual shooting, keep an eye out for the manic, walking butts that randomly clip through every part of the environment.

Runners-up: Rambo: The Video Game, Enforcer: Police. Crime. Action.

Best Game

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

No Caption Provided

Ah, 2014. What a long, strange year it's been. This was the first full calendar year on the books after the launch of all the new consoles, the year we expected those new machines to truly come into their own with a healthy slate of impressive software that said "this is what next-gen video games look like." Then a ton of those games got delayed into 2015.

There were still plenty of eminently worthwhile games that did release this year, though, and choosing our consensus favorite was perhaps easier than it's ever been. Whittling down a list of the best games of the year until we find the one game everyone can agree on, the one game everyone is happiest with, is usually grueling and results in someone feeling bitter or shortchanged. Not this year. There was scarcely a person on staff who didn't feel good about Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, what it brought to its respective genre, and how much fun it was to play.

Coming out of E3, Mordor went from a game nobody was talking about to one we cautiously hoped would bring something genuinely new to the open-world genre, and the game didn't just meet those expectations, it surpassed them. The Nemesis system that populates Mordor with dozens of uniquely characterized enemies gave the game's open world a feeling of dynamism and unpredictability that's not quite like anything we've seen in this genre. While it's a little trite to say that we hope every open-world game has a Nemesis equivalent going forward, this does feel like a small inflection point for action games, where ingenuity in game design meets more advanced AI, simulation, and computing power to generate video game worlds that feel just a little less faceless and a little more real than they used to.

Even setting Nemesis aside, Mordor's fundamental gameplay was entertaining as hell for hours and hours. Climbing around on ancient ruins and stabbing bad guys in the back has never been this much fun, and we hope other such franchises take a long look at everything Shadow of Mordor does right before they move on to their next installments.

I hated Destiny, so I'd rather Alien: Isolation took its spot. I didn't like the basic combat/traversal mechanics, so I wish Bayonetta took #1. I wasn't into Shovel Knight as much because I prefer 3D platformers to 2D ones. Games were pretty divisive this year, wasn't expecting it to be too similar to my top 10 though.

I feel like sometimes Brad gets a bad rap because Jeff can be just as stubborn sometimes, but this time I agree. It's a game that almost everyone else actively disliked so for it to go above some other games that were on several people's lists is ridiculous.

That said, I feel like Jeff either enjoys the game more than he claims or has some kind of brain damage. I've never heard someone bitch and moan about a game so often while continuing to play hours and hours of it to the exclusion of other options. His excuses about why he kept going back fell flat after the fourth week.

If anything, though, this list makes me concerned about how milquetoast opinions are becoming, and how worse that will get without Patrick there. This was the year of AAA being disappointing, and yet tired retreads managed to make most of the Top 10, and one of the exceptions is Jazzpunk, probably one of the least interesting indie games to have come out this year.

@paulunga: It's pretty clear that the guys weren't able to play many of the games so this is the top ten of what they could agree on. I think that Dark Souls 2 got royally ducked but what the hell, it keeps them off the servers. I've listened to these GOTY deliberations since the first one and this was definitely the weakest. Not sure if it's because of a lack of games or just the group has changed for the worse. Having Vinny leave for the east coast hasn't helped either.

Happy New Year everybody.

I love these podcasts but the goty discussion is always painful to listen to when it comes to brads golden goose. The whole podcast every year they emphasize that it's a group opinion but Brad always throws that out the window the moment his golden goose gets brought up and it always sours the atmosphere

I have played plenty of Destiny, got a character to level 29 and played the raid weekly for a while, but that game is not good. Everything in it, most of which Brad touted as positives, were designed specifically to exploit the player into thinking that the game isn't a jumbled mess that they threw together in the last year of development. Brad had plenty of representation of his list on the site list so that justification was just absurd. I wouldn't normally argue this stuff, but to highlight that exploitative garbage in a year where there was so much more to celebrate was just laughable.

The fact that Brad got what he wanted- and he's the only one that liked Destiny from that group of people (in fact some people here hate that game) is just soooo disappointing. Not because I don't like Destiny, but because I think GOTY is a group effort, and Brad just does not give an eff. Like, at all.

Come on Brad.

I don't think Dragon Age really got a fair shot. I haven't beaten it yet either, but I'm loving it, almost 50 hours in. It has its problems, but every game does. Even the bugs and issues that Jeff cited have actually never even occurred in my game (playing on PC).

Oh well, just a list. I loved all of the coverage anyway - thanks guys!

What a great list of games up for GOTY. Big ups to Monolith.

Its a horrible list of games, lets be honest. Its been a really poor year.

Compare it to next years list;

Uncharted 4, The Division, The Witcher 3. Metal Gear Solid, Batman, Tomb Raider, Bloodborne, Halo 5, No Mans Sky and more.

Laughable to not have Dragon Age even make the top 10....

I don't see an issue with this. Execution is paramount, Mordors use of that structure is not nearly as obnoxious or overbearing as Ubisoft proper is becoming.

@solidocelot: I think Destiny is disappointing in a lot of ways but if you think it rates anywhere near Worst Game then you are overdosing hard on hyperbole.

I definitely have a little less respect for Brad after shoving Destiny down everyone's throats in the podcast. It was like a whiny kid and that wouldn't rest until he got his way. Destiny's not a good game. Even if he loved it, that doesn't mean it HAD to be on this list just because he liked it. No one else on that podcast wanted it on the list at all...And Jeff was just indifferent. Tsk tsk.

[Edit] Thank you so much for an amazing year of content guys. I look forward to every bit of it, and couldn't enjoy it more. Just wanted to edit to thank you for hours of great experiences up front before I begin being fiercely critical of a totally subjective list of an arbitrary size of things that I enjoy. Also I love you.[Edit]

Arguing over a GOTY list is completely pointless and a waste of time...

...but listening to Brad wear everyone down on a game no one else wanted in the top 10 was frustrating. And I love Brad, but damn. I just can't understand having a top 10 game with so many identifiable shortcomings, that was so disappointing on so many levels, when people were really passionate about other games, based on....tight controls? Destiny just didn't grab me like that. Yes, it was a content problem, but that's kind of a huge problem, and it's what made it hurt so much for me to acknowledge, because I really wanted to like Destiny.

I guess at a certain point it comes down to whether you factor in your disappointment after "finishing" a game in the GOTY analysis. Brad made a decent point about the enjoyable experiences in Destiny you can have before you realize how disappointed you are, I just think you have to include that. For instance, I wouldn't recommend Lost to someone because I know how awful the ending is. Destiny is like a show with a bad ending. Would you recommend a show with a bad ending, if much of the show was good prior to it? Then Destiny makes sense as a top 10 GOTY.

In any case, great show, great cast, and thanks for a great year you guys, you're all awesome.

The Giant Bomb GOTY Top 10 list is always kind of ridiculous and worthless, even if it's enjoyable to listen to the argument that creates it (except for Brad largely ramming Destiny down everyone's throat, and Dan endlessly pushing Smash Bros and Mario Kart).

They don't even all play the games in the running, so it always comes down to a) who has played which games, and therefore b) who is willing to go to bat for a game. A list where all of the voting parties haven't even experienced all of the options, is essentially worthless.

Personally, I found the brief dismissal of Dragon Age to be jawdropping. Especially when a game like Destiny actually made the list (pushed by one person), and a game like Sunset Overdrive got 10X the amount of serious consideration/conversation.

Mordor over Bayonetta 2 is a fucking tragedy. You put "the ubisoft open world template" in your "please stop" category ffs, and Mordor *embraces* that shit. It does ONE thing of any interest and innovation, and that nemesis system is so gameable I coasted through the second half of the game without a smidgeon of resistance. I owned every Orc in town to the point where when the game was confronting me with "my nemesis" it was some low level fucker that had just been generated to have SOMETHING to show me.

THIS IS A FARCE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE.

Anyway. Bayonetta 2 you guys. Bayonetta 2. Holy shit.

Haven't played Bayonetta 2 yet but I agree with you on Mordor feeling very much like the Ubisoft open world template they were railing against earlier in the discussion, but with the Batman combat and a novel new game system in the nemeses. I quit the game halfway through I was so bored by all the tired gameplay trappings that were already played out in other series. The garbage story constantly kept turning me away as well, and the novelty of the nemesis system wore off too fast for me to put up with the rest, which was just Assassin's Creed and Batman (ASSMAN) in a universe I once thought was interesting but now apparently abhor (LOTR).

It's still well done for what it is, but I have a dozen other games I'd put before it.

This was a good time. Thanks all.

Personally I get why people hate how common the Ubisoft template is and it is kinda dumb that it's even in The Crew, but as far as I'm concerned they could put that shit in every single open world game because I still love doing it all. But then, the true fun of these awards is that everyone can argue for hours over this stuff and it doesn't actually matter as long as we're all having fun shouting about what we love. Here's to 2015!

I imagine that all the people whining about Shadow of Mordor are having a miserable end of year/new year. That game is dominating Game of the Year on the popular websites and youtube channels. I'm not sure why anyone comes to Giantbomb if it isn't to listen to a group of distinct/eloquent voices share their opinions. If you enjoy hanging out with this crew, why would you be upset about their opinions. Disagree? Sure, but the animosity and ire in these comments is reminding me of the communities from those "other" sites--the ones that I don't read any more because the community is so belligerent. I constantly recommend Giantbomb to other videogame fans because I think it has the best community on the Internet. Let's not finish the year on a negative note. (FTR, I'm currently spending my second day hooked up to an I.V. as I'm trying to finally put an end to nearly two months of illness. If I've seen more negativity here than actually exists, blame that. )

Eurogamer's write up regarding Mario Kart 8 on it being their GOTY is spot on and perfectly illustrates why it deserves to be on this list. Brad and Jeff, as much as I love em, are clearly the dads of this site now. All it takes is for a Nintendo game to share a similar title to one that came before it in a franchise for them to write it off completely. Sure they both put in a pathetically meager number of hours with the new one, but in that time they never even bothered to learn how to properly play/enjoy the game (understanding the drift mechanic which isnt that difficult) or experience the great online/see the full DLC offering. There is a ton of depth and skill involved in high level play for those who put in the effort and seek it.

The same thing goes for Smash Bros. Brad and Jeff (and some others on the site) have far too narrow a view as to what a truly competitive fighter/brawler can be and how they can play. All they see is a random mish mash of craziness that doesnt reward skill (similar to MK8), but like most Nintendo games that is only surface-level, and only there if you choose to play it that way. The core of smash is a very technically demanding and deep rock paper scissor game, but when they play it they're just throwing rocks at eachother. They have this resistance to looking for or acknowledging depth in nintendo titles, especially if they are iterations upon an existing franchise. I hop e that one day these somewhat unintentional and instinctual biases are shed.

Thanks for a fun year of content guys! Despite what I just wrote above I still very much enjoy my time here

It is a bit weird to see Destiny go from a game that they were talking about being most disappointing to being in the top 10. Halfway through the podcast right now, this should be interesting.

---edit---

After listening to the podcast - while I accept their argument that a game that's disappointing can still be one of the best games of the year, I still didn't hear a convincing argument for Destiny. Basically it sounds like that game got it's loot grind addiction hooks into Brad and that was the only reason it was championed. It's like Crossy Road - addictive as hell, fun for what it is, but I wouldn't call it a great game.

Wolfenstein should be in Destiny's spot and it's really damn unfortunate that it was left behind just because it was a very good, but linear single player experience without a long tail and therefore "forgettable".

Very happy Hearthstone is on the list at number 5. Also totally agree with the Please Stop award, but I would extend it to the Assassin's Creed franchise myself.
