Here's Everything Nintendo Would Tell Me About Wii U

Will all games support screen transfer? USB hard drive support? Unreal Engine 3?

Battle Mii was just one of several conceptual demos shown at E3. It may not become a game.
Battle Mii was just one of several conceptual demos shown at E3. It may not become a game.

Getting specifics about Nintendo's new console was like extracting teeth at E3. The company showed what it showed and had little interest in committing to more.

It didn't help the only person I was able to talk about the device was the head of Nintendo's public relations department.

Believe me, I'd requested a chance to speak with Reggie Fils-Aime or Satoru Iwata. They were busy, I was told. I don't doubt that.

In any other case, I wouldn't spend time at E3 speaking with a public relations person, but as Wii U was the biggest thing at E3, I wanted to extract as much information for you as I possibly could.

What follows is an edited conversation with Mark Franklin, where I tried to address concerns and questions about Wii U. I came away with plenty of vagueness, but some answers, too.

Are developers required to implement the screen transfer feature into every game?

Franklin: We're not making any prerequisites to any of the developers to say "you have to do this, you have to do that." What we're showing at this year's show is just the possibilities. That's just an example. Certainly, that's a possibility.

How easy is it for a developer to implement the screen transfer feature, if they choose to?

Franklin: I'm not going to get into the technical side, but it's certainly up to the developers to make that choices. We've shown what's possible and now it's up to the developers to come up with content.

What's the range of the Wii U controller? Can you take it out of the room?

== TEASER ==

Franklin: We're not talking about range, but the vision is that the controller resides in the living room. That's where the central entertainment is going to be anyway. You've got your TV and you've got your new controller. And just imagine the Chase Mii experience, where you've got four buddies on your Wii remotes and one guy on your new controller, but you're all gathered in the same room having that experience--two different experiences but sharing in the experience. That's the vision.

No Caption Provided

Can you have multiple Wii U controllers connected to the same console?

Franklin: At this year's E3, we're just showing this one experience and not really talking beyond that, which is just the one controller, plus up to four Wii remotes. We are showing specific experiences along those lines--you've got Chase Mii, Battle Mii. They all provide a different scenario. We've got a true, social multiplayer experience versus a single-player experience versus a multiplayer experience but two people getting two very different experiences in Battle Mii.

Again, showing off the possibilities of what the system can do, what the new controller can do, and seeing what developers can come up with.

Does the Wii U controller have its own specific name?

Franklin: Right now, we're just calling it the new controller. Don't have another name for it yet.

What about backwards compatibility with Wii? GameCube?

Franklin: Yes, backwards compatible. Just one generation. You can have Wii software and Wii devices, so your Wii Remotes, Wii Remote Plus, Classic Controllers. [...] No Wavebird. [laughs]

Could you theoretically control the Wii U interface with just a Wii Remote?

Franklin: It's so early in the process right now that, again, the thing that we're showing right now is having the new controller, the wireless new controller interface with the system, and having the Wii Remote interface with the sensor bar. There's also a sensor bar on the new controller, so your Wii remotes could read off of that.

All of the demos shown at E3 featured only on Wii U controller. Will it support more? Unknown.
All of the demos shown at E3 featured only on Wii U controller. Will it support more? Unknown.

How would that work? Do you put the Wii U next to the TV?

Franklin: We haven't talked about any examples, but the capability is there, so that the Wii Remotes could read off of your new controller. What that means [is] there could maybe be a game that is just on that new controller, but we haven't discussed anything like that yet.

How long have third-parties know about the hardware?

Franklin: We don't talk about timing like that, but we did announce the system earlier than E3, and so development kits have been out there to all the major developers.

How does the 3DS interact with the Wii U?

Franklin: Mr. Iwata announced on stage something I'm really excited about. Mr. Sakurai [is] one, making a new Smash Bros. game and two, there's going to be cross-platform compatibility between the Nintendo 3DS and the new system. [...] There's no more details other than that, but the prospect of being able to have some experiences shared on two different devices with the same game is exciting. Smash is a huge game, so you can imagine what kind of possibilities could come up with having that on Nintendo 3DS and the new controller.

Have you had any conversations with Epic Games about Unreal Engine 3?

Franklin: Nothing to announce on that. We're not really talking about the technical specifications or the behind-the-scenes engines that are running the system or anything like that. What we want to focus on, and what consumers have continued to look at, especially with Nintendo products, is they want to see what the experience is like.

Is this the last we hear about the system until next E3?

Franklin: It's hard to say right now. We just announced it, so that's what we're focused on it. We want to make sure that people have time on the system, that they get a chance to experience the unique opportunity that the system offers, so that's what we're focused on right now. In terms of next steps, that'll come. We'll be figuring that out in the weeks and months ahead.

The Super Mario Bros. Mii game shown was little more than a polished up Super Maro Bros. Wii.
The Super Mario Bros. Mii game shown was little more than a polished up Super Maro Bros. Wii.

What about the disc format?

Franklin: It's going to be a high-density disc that's a proprietary format. It'll be a high-density disc format, but we don't have anything to share besides that.

And storage?

Franklin: We'll have SD cards, but we'll also have USB slots.

You'll be able to use a hard drive at personal storage?

Franklin: Yeah, theoretically.

If a developer wanted to, could they just leverage the Wii remotes and not the Wii U controller?

Franklin: It's going to be up to the developers to make those kinds of decisions. There's tons of possibilities. It's going to be up to them to figure out what those possibilities are going to be.

Should we expect an online experience on par with Xbox Live and PlayStation Network?

Franklin: We see Wii U as a flexible system. It's not a one-size-fits-fall. It's not a centralized system. What John [Riccitiello, Electronic Arts] was describing [at the press conference] was his vision. We'll work with third-parties to understand what the opportunities are, and I think what's going to drive maybe the best examples are individual approaches, the best of class individual approaches both from third-party and from Nintendo. John was just referring to what he thought might happen.

Patrick, I'm not sure why you are asking this question -- you asked it twice, in so many words. His second answer, quoted above, makes it sound like this is possible, if the dev chooses to do it, but, Franklin's reply is so convoluted, I almost wonder if he has confused himself. If he really meant to say, "Yes, if the devs choose to do it.", then why didn't he just say that. On the other hand, if he meant to totally deflect and avoid answering, then his answer doesn't make sense, not even according to weird PR logic. The developers obviously cannot magically wish some functionality of the system into existence.

For what it's worth, interviews with Reggie aren't saying much more than what's in here. The difference is that Franklin's language is much blander and PR-like.

Great PR answers to everything, except he probably didn't know the answers to most of the questions Patrick asked so he just used PR speak to cover up his lack of knowledge.

People seem to be pissed off that there's no wavebird, but... That'll be two generations old at the point that it comes out. I would've been suprised if it did support it. I honestly couldn't actually care less about the controller, as long as there are good games that control well with whatever the controller is. Here's hoping there's more support for this from good developers than there was for the wii.

Well that certainly was a lot of words, however I think you could have condensed it a little into a few key points and saved some time.

Hi can you tell me everything you know about the Wii U?

Franklin: We are not really ready to answer any questions about the console right now, but we can confirm that it exists and it will play games. We are showing several "experiences" here at the show but these are in no way representative of what the actual games may or may not be. It is up to developers the type of "experiences" they will create for this console but we are not talking about what they will be yet, possibilities. No Gamecube support. [Laughs]

I don't understand how this kind of talk from a PR guy about a project at least 12 months out is a surprise. But then I also don't get how WiiU not supporting Wavebird or Nintendo not wasting time on trivialities like specs is a dealbreaker. At the end of the day I guess I just don't get "hardcore" gamers. I'm fine with that, I suppose, and happy not to count myself among them.

Man that nintendo guy was grating on me. Way too evasive. Really not liking Nintendo's stance on their system now. Why even show it off without hard specs, or even basic information about the damn thing. Oh no it's about "the experience".

Also de-centralized online makes me really nervous. You can't tell me that by 2012 Nintendo hasn't figured out an online system Microsoft's had down for like 8 years now.

Based on the available information I wouldn't want to get one. It's as if they want you to just blindly buy one like the Wii. I did that, and got burned because there was nothing to do on it. I actually need nintendo to build more trust than that. Guess that'll hopefully happen as time passes, but once again I ask why even reveal it? At least Sony had some pretty specific information about the Vita.

Man it must of been tough to talk to the PR dude, he's barely giving us something, it must be really early that they don't know stuff like if 2 controllers work... this console announcement feels weird, I can't remember how the current generation consoles were announced but I remember there was more info. I wanna know if you can plug the controller in the console cause that thing will need recharging every hour xD.

Kudos to Martin Franklin for not actually answering any of the questions. That's some good public relations work.

To be fair I don't think ANYONE knows the hard facts even at Nintendo. The presentation they made appears to be more and more 'theoretical' it as not just the games that as tech demos, the entire system as beta at e3. In fact I think they showed off what they did purely for feedback and because they knew it had already leaked. But this might help them in the long run

What game sites and magazines are saying is being looked at carefully I'm sure. The vibe I'm getting is 60% negative, so I'm sure that will figure into the final design. Announcing this and losing 8% to 10% of their stock price probably has people's attention in Kyoto.

Jesus Christ! They might as well have waited until they actually know what the hell it is their making, make it, then announce what they've made. Mark Franklin just comes off looking like a fool... Then again... He might get hired as the White House press secretary...

I wouldn't have minded waiting for them to announce it later when they have figured it out and come off looking professional. "[...] They want to see what the experience is like." He keeps mentioning the word "experience". Well... What experience? You don't know you're gonna do with it. I think people would have had a greater "experience" if Nintendo had waited a year and had some real games to play.

"It's going to be up to the developers to make those kinds of decisions. There's tons of possibilities. It's going to be up to them to figure out what those possibilities are going to be." Oh I see, it's up to third-party game developers to make your system worth playing... Nice job "theoretically".

Apart from announcing it way to early, the Wii U seems to indeed be full of awesome possibilities. I know the same was said of the Wii and the DS and we haven't really seen any games that take advantage of the technology incredibly well but I've got a feeling that the Wii U's innovation will offer something special.

UE3 will definitely be on Wii U.

a) One of the major reasons they're introducing the Wii U in the first place is so that they can reach out to third party developers; what's the most popular 3rd party engine? UE3.

b) The Wii U will certainly be more powerful than the 360 and PS3, maybe even as powerful as a current mid end PC depending on the GPU clocks. This is more than enough to handle UE3 in 1080p, perhaps even with antialiasing.

c)  Darksiders 2 has already been confirmed for it, which has been rumored to run on either Frostbite 2 or the proprietary multiplatform engine used in the original that was very similar to UE3. So that's already proof it can handle that caliber of engine just fine.

The main reason the Wii wasn't able to handle UE3 wasn't even the GPU power; it was the era for which the technology was developed for. The basic shader architecture wasn't even there, it was literally something from a previous millennium. Other than DX11, the Wii U should be able to handle most of today's games fine. Perhaps not always with antialiasing or 60fps, but bare 1080p on modern engines is an attainable goal.

Thank you for asking those burning questions! Great to read them.

In General This seems to be something Nintendo have not really thought out much properly yet.
Lots of ideas and concepts but it is a little worrying how they have not though about the practical aspects of the console.

Screen Transfer and Game use of the screen:

With no requirements seemingly set in stone and the options with this thing, I would be scared as hell as a developer.

- Someone turns the TV off, what is going to happen to the game and the controller screen?
If your using the controller and a two screen mode or it is your inventory and then the TV is off. What is going to happen and what is the user going to expect?
-- If you have to make the game work in controller mode how is that inventory now going to work? You got to code all this stuff!
If you have a message saying "turn on your tv" (And how are you supposed to know this as a developer by the way Nintendo) on the controller your going to be annoyed.

Multiple Controllers:

They have to know what their console can push out over the air. Full render to four controllers in a HD game as well as the TV Screen AND the actual controls and possible Cameras?
They would need some serious grunt in that thing and then for it to be affordable and those controllers to be affordable?
Not saying it is a no go but really some doubts on this from them.
No lag or fail basically with these things. Lag - Failed.

Online:

Sounds like nothing will change, they may do away with Wii codes I hope but from the sounds of it it is going to be a lawless field of "It has online, do your own thing"

Media Format and Hardrive:

No Hardrive?
We all know again how much that is a pain for developers. Will it or will it not? Your game instantly has limitations as you got to account for the smallest storage space available to the user. If it can even be not at all - that is a problem. If it is small - a problem!

Media - Sounds like Nintendo do not really care about media, I would see it playing DVD's but again - Not really thinking Nintendo!

Just a stack of issues, and I can see a stack of headaches from developers. If Nintendo are just going to give the codebase and hardware off to developers.
As a Developer I would have lots of nice ideas because in theory the Wii U has lots of potential but in practicality it is a pure nightmare.
As a Developer this is going to be a real headache.

@giantbomb Could you guys interview some developers, Maybe the Bastian guys to find out what they think about this thing?

I get the strong sense that Nintendo are a bunch of smug assholes that think they get to dictate everything about the video game industry.  They never come off humble, they always have to let you know how much better they are than everyone else, and there's never any humor to what they do.
