It's Like An Online Version Of Chase HQ

Criterion's new Need For Speed extends the long arm of the law, but will you accept it as a warm handshake or just keep driving?

This guy wants to bash you into submission, just like the actual police!
This guy wants to bash you into submission, just like the actual police!
The police have been a significant presence in some of the best games in EA's Need For Speed series. Though you've occasionally been able to wear the badge yourself, the cops usually come into the picture as a result of your wreckless high-speed driving, after which they try to put your car out of commission, impound your vehicle, and throw you in the slam. The latest game in the long-running driving franchise returns to these core concepts and adds a robust-looking mix of data that personalizes the game by constantly comparing your performances against those of your friends.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is being developed by Criterion, the makers of the Burnout franchise. While what EA is showing so far doesn't look quite as crash-heavy as the Burnout games, that trademark sense of speed is right there, in front of your face, running at 60 frames per second. That sense of speed makes these car chases seem downright dangerous, and the heavier feel of the cars themselves give you plenty of opportunities to lose control and dent up your car. Since taking and giving damage via collisions is a main part of the mode EA is showing, that "on the edge of control" feeling makes everything feel a bit more manic as you drive.
== TEASER ==

The mode itself runs with up to eight players, who fill up teams of racers and cops. The racers are trying to get the heck out of trouble by getting away from the law, while the cops need to ram the race vehicles to knock them out of commission. This all goes down in an open world with over 100 miles of road to race on. Thankfully, it's more than just "cop rams racer until game is over." Each side has a set of four abilities that unlock and become available as the chase goes on. So after a few minutes of struggle, cops gain the ability to call in roadblocks. Other abilities, like an EMP blast that short-circuits the target car if hit, or a helicopter that gives you a wider patrol area, which keeps racers from getting away as easily. Meanwhile, the getaway drivers can employ radar jammers or decoys to force the cops to rely on pure visuals to see where they need to be going. Racers can also enable overdrive, which is a sort of hyper nitrous boost.

There are other modes and full single-player components for both cops and racers. All of these activities, online and off, will earn bounty, which serves as the experience points equivalent in Hot Pursuit. This is how you'll unlock additional cars and abilities.

While the demonstration being given here at E3 2010 focuses more on the Autolog--a news feed of your friends' activities that gives you pointers on how to proceed if you want to take back the top spot on some leaderboards--the multiplayer mode being shown feels like the cop chases from Need For Speed: Most Wanted transferred into an online multiplayer game. Now all they're missing is Razor Callahan...

I'm really liking the sound of this. The live demo at the EA stage show was awful but it seems like that was the demonstrators fault.

I played some Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (PC) at the time and Criterion does make some great games so maybe I'll dig this.  I hope they integrate much more Burnout than Need for Speed in this game, though.  It's really a shame if EA took a Criterion game and branded it 'Need for Speed' just for sales purposes.

@Blair: It seems more like Criterion was charged with making the game as a Need For Speed game. It doesn't really feel like a Burnout game at all, though you can see a few influences here and there.

Having a 16 player 8 vs. 8 cops and robbers mode could be cool. They had it in Burnout Paradise.

Seems excellent! And am I right that the track shown in the image on the right of Jeff's post has redwood trees in the background? It could be a track from Hot Pursuit 2, because IIRC, there was an awesome track that had just that. It might have been called Redwood Forest, actually. Though I know there was a track in HP2 with huge redwoods in it. I hope some of the content from older Hot Pursuit games returns.

Are the 'racers' just trying to escape, or are they still racing?  I feel like a kinda Road Rash style mode would be ideal.

I've never played any NFS titles before Underground so I'm prob considered non school, but even I'm excited for this new title, always loved the police interaction from Most Wanted, and to see it as an actual fully fledged side singleplayer and multiplayer across open world is all kinds of awesome. Novemeber can't come soon enough.

They introduced cloaking devices for the getaway cars.

That's just fucking dumb.

I want real world cars escaping the cops by driving skills not science fiction gimmicks.

I always loved the more cops/robbers style of games that has been in the NFS series in the past, for mainly single player, Most Wanted was fun as hell to just screw around in and get a huge amount of cops on you. This has me hoping for another good cop game, though i dunno how well it would do in online play.

I want this. Like a lot. I haven't played an NFS title since Most Wanted, and this looks like it has the police madness I am looking for, and I loved Burnout.

No doubt Criterion will improve this over the last "Hot Pursuit" I played but these games always feel off when I play them. Probably because of the lack of damage to the cars. Bouncing off a suspect isn't my thing, I want my Push Bar to pin his hand to the steering wheel when I T-Bone him.

I was sad to hear that Criterion was drawn into the NFS franchise. I've always loved the Burnout series and after accepting the depature from tracks in Paradise, I played it for 2 months straight.
But after seeing that trailer; wow. I'm hyped. NFS:HP2 was a great game for the original Xbox. It seems that Criterion has gone back to the roots, yet given their flavor to the action.
The live demo seemed a bit iffy as the goals for the players wasn't really explained so I couidn't really understand what they were doing. Was the cop trying to crash the racer? Was the racer trying to outrun the cop? Seems like it needed a bit more tactic than just rubbing paint all the time.

I remember it. There was a bridge at the end and it opened up into a cliff face before going inside a short tunnel. It's an iconic track so I can defiantly see them bringing it back.

I know exactly what you mean, man i loved that game. Hopefully this new game will still have the traditional racing modes (multiplayer or with bots or both) with the cop chases (so ai cops trying to screw you over while you also race against your opponents to the finish line).

If Criterion can't revive this franchise, no one can.
